Julian Bond has been one of America’s most prominent civil rights figures since he led demonstrations as a student at Morehouse College in Atlanta in the early 1960s. He was a longtime board member of the NAACP, the nation’s oldest and largest civil rights organization, and served as its chair from 1998 until 2010. Bond was also a founder of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee. He served in the Georgia General Assembly for 20 years and was the SPLC’s first president. He is a Distinguished Adjunct Professor at American University in Washington, D.C., and a professor of history at the University of Virginia.
