Catholic University Cancels Anti-Semites’ Lectures

By Heidi Beirich on February 12, 2008 - 2:17 pm, Posted in Anti-Semitic, Radical Traditionalist Catholic

A lecture series featuring presentations by two virulently anti-Semitic “radical traditionalist Catholics” was cancelled by The Catholic University of America on Monday after Hatewatch contacted the university to ask about the events. Radical traditionalist Catholics (read a major investigation of this theology here) deny certain Vatican teachings, particularly the Second Vatican Council’s reforms of the 1960s, and most hold anti-Semitic views that are rejected by the Roman Catholic Church. Many radical traditionalists have been excommunicated by the church.

E. Michael JonesE. Michael Jones (right) was scheduled to speak Wednesday at the university’s Edward M. Crough Center for Architectural Studies as part of a lecture series “exploring how to create new communities based on the tradition and teaching of the Roman Catholic Church.” The lectures are sponsored by an off-campus, private group called Building Catholic Communities, which describes itself as “an informal confederation of scholars, architects, religious and lay leaders who are hungry to rediscover the rich history and tradition of community life based on Catholic principals [sic].”

Jones, a former hippie who spent his honeymoon in traffic trying to reach Woodstock, has a long track record of anti-Semitism and his writings run through all the usual anti-Semitic canards — that “Jewish media elites” run the country, that Jews are “major players” in pornography, and that Jews are behind Masonry and the French Revolution. And that’s only the start. Jones also publishes a “continuing series on the Jews,” looking into the various evils Jews have allegedly caused, in his magazine, Culture Wars. The magazine’s cover stories give a flavor of its message: “Judaizing: Then and Now,” “The Converso Problem: Then and Now,” “The Judaism of Hitler,” “Shylock Comes to Notre Dame,” and so on. Jones has also described the Holocaust as “a reaction to Jewish messianism (in the form of Bolshevism).”

According to Victor Nakas, associate vice president of public affairs, the university was unaware of Jones’ anti-Semitic views. Shortly after Hatewatch contacted him to inquire about the lecture series’ sponsorship, Nakas sent an E-mail saying, “The individuals you reference below will not be speaking on our campus.”

Building Catholic Communities, which the university says is run by Tim Ehlen, also had a man named John Sharpe slated to deliver a lecture on April 23. Sharpe, a former public affairs officer on the aircraft carrier USS Carl Vinson, is another particularly hardline radical traditionalist. He has attended major white supremacist events and blamed the 9/11 attacks on “Judeo Masonry,” which he considers the “current and historical mortal enemy of Christian civilization.” He runs two hate groups, the Legion of St. Louis and IHS Press, which Building Catholic Communities’ website links to. The legion’s material brims with propaganda from the likes of Ernst Zundel, the neo-Nazi publisher of such books as The Hitler We Loved and Why, along with Holocaust deniers and other Jew-haters.

After Sharpe’s anti-Semitic beliefs were disclosed by the Intelligence Report in 2006, the Navy began an investigation into him, suspending him his post on the aircraft carrier. Officials said last fall that they were in the process of reassigning him.

SPLC! That says it all! Notice how the writer just indulges in vacuuous ad hominems without any attempt at refutation. Jews are unquestionably over-represented in the pornography and holocaust industries, as only two examples.

Now, maybe we can talk about all those murderous, Jewish Bolsheviks…. Or perhaps Bernie Madoff, Sam Israel, Lou Pearlman, Andy Fastow, Jack Abramoff, Gary Winnick….

    Carter
Typical response to statements – mockery and facile assertions alluding to florid conspiracy theories. No evidence just a sneer. I don’t know who’s right but I prefer to go with the evidence – evidence “Carter” conspicuously does not provide.
btw Benjamin Ginsberg says “Jews constitute 25 per cent of the elite journalists and publishers” – not exactly an anti-Semitic source there. And take that together with fact that the mainstream media (and political class) is overwhelmingly supportive of Israel even when such support is clearly not in US interests and I think we can see the beginnings of a case. Still, I’ll stop now to allow you to make a frightfully amusing and personalised smear. Good luck.

I think that not allowing the “Traditionalist” Catholics to speak at a Catholic college, even if you disagree with what they say is absurd. Can you imagine SPLC speaking up to stop “Tradtionalist” Jews who believe that a cord should be strung up to separate a community in a public city, or that Jews should have rights that non-Jews should not have in Israel, or that women should be forced to wear certain clothing and not be allowed to be rabbis in some traditions, or that Kyrias Joel should be gerrymandered to include only orthodox Jews so that girls and boys not be on the same bus, IN AMERICA , in NY? Where is your own soul searching going on–I have been the victim of anti-catholic rhetoric and worse from the Jewish community my entire life but I don’t want to ban their speech–geesh are you all out of touch or what? We really have real problems in this country, I think you need to get current and stop trying to stop debate. We have a new thing going on here. African Americans being attacked by undocumented and documented Hispanics in LA in gang turff wars where the African Americans are children, women and other non-gang related people target because they are black. Catch up man—if a bunch of old catholics want to live like the first century why do you care? Do you attack that Lubovich, or the other orthodox groups who are also totally sexist and racist against all non-Jews or do you save it to attack others who are an easier target. Get real

“….that “Jewish media elites” run the country, that Jews are “major players” in pornography, and that Jews are behind Masonry and the French Revolution. ”

Well, is it true or not? If it isn’t where is your rebuttal?”

Jews, known for their craftiness, are able to put microchips into your brain while you sleep. They do this through their Star-Chamber like entity called the CIA (which is actually run by Israel). The only hope you have is to wear a tin-foil hat. The “skull-cap” of the Jew is actually a device for thwarting those microchips & the micro-waves beamed down by satellites controlled by Masons (who actually are the creators of both the Mason Jar and the microwave oven) because they are already in our head. If you could just dig deep enough you’d find them and stop the Jewish rule of the world. You can actually see the chip if you look deep into your ear canal. Do not do this in any room not covered in aluminum foil.
….So just dig DEEP into your head, genius. You’ll be doing the world a great favor.

I haven’t a clue myself, but I’m dying to hear both sides of the argument without wading through tons of writings both pro and con.

Come to think of it, I’ve never heard a rebuttal even once to smilar charges. Why not?

I would recommend an examination of the SPLC’s methods before giving credence to their allegations. See Ken Silverstein’s work on the SPLC. I presume the SPLC in the interests of full disclosure will not object to this post.

  • Jeremy Wilkinson

Could the SPLC name 1 (one) teaching of Vatican II denied by Jones. I await your answer – after all you’ve done a “major investigation” on him so it shouldn’t take you long to come up with one.

  • Scott Mathern-Jacobson

I would think there is a better argument to let them speak on a public campus/state school.

  • Aric Anderson

The SPLC comes off badly here. I do not know Sharpe’s work, but I do know Jones’, and there is nothing anti-Semitic about it. It acknowledges there are bad Jews, and holds bad Jews to account for being bad Jews — but that is hardly anti-Semitic. The SPLC poses a greater danger to the Catholic faith than Jones does (or, I suspect, Sharpe). The University will be hearing from this concerned alumnus that it should not allow voices of its fellow Catholics to be silenced by enemies of the Church such as SPLC.

As I once told a right-wing acquaintance of mine, if Jews are this superhumanly successful, then I’m definitely converting to Judaism!

Opposing the fascist right should never include attacking anyone’s freedom of speech or the right to hear it,even if it is particularly offensive to some listeners.Attacks on free speech or the right to hear it is censorship and reeks of fascism itself. These persons are not people i myself would care to hear personally, but there may have been others who were interested in hearing it.The Nazis themselves were expert at attacking freedom of expression in academia in Germany.Once in power they exterminated several different types of persons whom they regarded as an obstacle to their grab for still greater measures of power over the German people.A wise man once said that those who do not remember the past are condemned to repeat it.P

Speaking of the idea of “community life based on Catholic principles,” it may be interesting to learn where the credit-union movement in North America traces its origins to the French Canadian financial powerhouse known as the Mouvement Desjardins, itself founded as a channel towards the socioeconomic empowerment of traditionally Catholic French Canadians in the province of Quebec.

With particular emphasis on rural communities, and with the component caisses populaires being established, by and large, @ parish level, for the benefit of its parishoners.
