The Sons of Confederate Veterans is racked by angry divisions between traditionalists, who focus on cleaning up Confederate graveyards and conducting Civil War re-enactments, and SCV leaders who have aligned themselves with hard-core white supremacists.

I feel strongly that display of any variant of the Confederate flag is a hate crime. As for the “Second American Revolution,” I echo a comment that I read in Michael Shaara’s “Killer Angels” – “if there had been no slavery, there would have been no war.”

In my state members of the SCV can apply for a special license tag that displays the Confederate battle ensign. I think that this is a misuse of public resources and an unnecessary implement for offending members of our society.

With the distinct possibility of an African-American ascending to the presidency of our nation, it is high time to look closely at those persons and institutions who seek to divide rather than to unite the nation by falsifying history in the way that many members of the SCV seem to want to do.

I think you should learn your facts, and American history! The war was NOT about slavery at all, it was about taxes.

The belief that the civil war was about something other than slavery is one that will be endlessly argued. It is not a “fact” but one of many possible interpretations of history. You have a right to it.

First, Mr. Barnes is wrong on the statement that the license plate is a misuse of public resources. In Florida, the procedure for obtaining the approval of a “speciality” license tag is both a resource and monetary consuming effort that is borne 100% by the sponsoring organization. NO public resources are used at all. You can go to your search engine and type in “Florida Specialty License Tag” and it will give you the requirements needed to obtain approval for one of these tags. Mr. Keuren should be made aware that it isn’t interpretations that started the War Between the States but deep-seated differences between the North and South on both economic and constitutional theory. Further, the main bone of contention was the tariff, which was the chief source of Federal revenue at that time. Complicating matters, was the fact that the South opposed Federal subsidies for internal improvements and private business. It is very easy to use slavery as the main issue that started the war but it goes much deeper that that.

To whom it concerns…since when was the Civil War of 1860′s EVER about slavery? And whom pray tell sold the African Americans into slavery? Why others of their race if you do research you will find this to be true. Don’t ridicule the consumer…look towards the seller first! As far as Re-Enactments are concerned we are Living Historians trying to teach the truth to as many as will listen, seeing as the public school books & such have taught too many people untruths about the Civil War. Do some more research and lose the chip on your shoulder, please.
    Thank you kindly for reading.
