Seven Patchogue, N.Y. teenagers who set out to “go fight Mexicans” are facing charges related to the beating and stabbing death of 38-year-old Ecuadorean immigrant Marcelo Lucero, who was targeted for his perceived ethnicity, according to police.

I find it fascinating that those who rally behind the slogan “just what about illegal don’t you understand” and who pontificate about how we are a nation of laws can sit silently by and make no such comment when hooligan lawbreakers commit violence because of national origin.

What is it about “racist” they don’t understand?

This story and the various comments on this page reinforce my opinion, which briefly follows.
Our country is still not united. We are as polarized as we have been for the last few years. I have seen this polarization process begin BEFORE the Bush admin, it just got terrible after 9/11. I could argue that we as a people have struggled with polarization during the duration of out history as a nation. Does anyone remember the civil war? The last 20 years or so the divisions have not been so obvious as they were during our history, but they have been with us. Long ago our divisions were decided for us…slaves, Indians, Irish, etc. We were born on one side or another. It took conscience ( or money) to choose a side that we were not born into. Today, it is a little more difficult to SEE who is different than us politically. I am a southern white rural female, who is often assumed to be racist (by whites and blacks) , conservative and Southern Baptist. I am none of these things. Today it is often our ideas that seperate us. But when it comes to Immigrants it is the same old racism and zenophobia.
Because of assuptions by others as to my ideas (I suppose this is because I am white and southern), I get a rare glimpse into the hearts of those who claim to be just concerned about border security. If I play dumb and just ask questions, I get the zenophobic and/or racists view within minutes of discussion. It is still easy to “see” skin color/body and facial features or hear a Spanish accent. Thanks to the likes of Bill O’Reilly and Chris Dodd, my neighbors emotionally spout false “facts” about immigrants, illeagal or not, about crime, disease, or govt. benefits. To be fair, I have fact checked these “stats”, by calling the health dept. and CDC concerning the various disease stats these folks claim. According to these public health agencies, these stats are just plain made up. I called local and state law enforcement aencies to see what crimes were being commited by immigrants, legal and not. Almost none statistically. I do know that in some Mexican border towns their is more crime, especially drug related, but that is not the case where I live and where this murder occured. Anyway, I could go on, but…
I also have one more glinpse into the racists ideas masked as border control. My ex-husband and in-laws are Puerto Rican. My father- in- law is a retired Lieutenant Colonel in the US Air Force. My inlaws have always had to deal with racism from some, but now they are experiencing more hate than ever. Two of them have on seperate occasions been told to return to their own country! This is their country. Ignorant people though do not know, nor care to know that Puerto Rico IS the US. They still speak Spanish sometimes though and have an accent.
Lastly, I do not want to see those who believe these bigoted ideas treated poorly either. I hope and pray for a day when we Americans can truly share an ideal of Unity.

To Jerome and all of the Hateful ,rotten , ignorant, self righteous , arrogant , sick minded people who think like Jerome , Maybe you should read your, (our) ,constitution and take some sensitivity classes . No one has the right to and there is no reason to kill or torture someone for being of another race ,culture etc . These sick big pigs who committed this crime ( AND YES IT IS A CRIME ) and who ended up killing this MAN are WACK JOBS , who don’t belong in our society (And who and hopefully will be put to their death ). For you to say that this is because of the Immigrants and Border Patrol is as wacked out as you are . In case no one told you ,unless you’re an American Indian , you’re an Immigrant too . Heinous Crimes are committed every day by Million of American Citizens ( read the above article for an example ) ,Read and watch the news for more inhumane treatment of other humans Read your History Books too , . where have you been ? And I see you have the Bush mentality , of blaming others , keeping the country divided and putting fear in others with your sick mind , and I bet you call your self a Christian too ( which make it bad for REAL CHRISTIAN ) ! I think you and others like you :need to move and make your own sick country ( OH I FORGOT it’s called PRISON ), because your sick mentality won’t be accepted in this new time of change .Obviously we out number you idiots and we’re in power and your time has passed .Go somewhere else and spread your fears , hate , prejudice and your arrogance , Bush & Cronies are gone ! My wish for you and people like you is that your worst FEARS come true , They’ve already started :):):):):)

How failure to control borders has anything to do with murder by bullying thugs with no regard for human life is beyond comprehension (re: Jerome). They’d do the same to anyone if they felt bored enough and got drunk enough, but that night they just figured they’d go after a ‘Mexican’ or anyone who was close enough. ‘Fags, queers, niggers, spics, kikes’, anyone different that they felt didn’t deserve life, I doubt it mattered. Good candidates for Brown Shirts. There are valid arguments and concerns about illegal immigration, but this has nothing to do with them.

    Beaner-jumping? OMFG! LMAO!

These sorts of things would not be happening if this country had borders. We have become a nation of lawlessness with tens of millions of illegals in this country committing heineous crimes against U.S. Citizens everyday. Why don’t you whackos ever stand up for anything American. Maybe you all should move your base to Mexico City, Mexico. I bet you could find some real causes there.
