Glenn Spencer, More Hateful by the Day, Drones On

By Casey Sanchez on January 14, 2009 - 12:53 pm, Posted in Anti-Immigrant

Glenn Spencer, who heads the hate groups American Patrol and American Border Patrol, loves showing off the high-tech gizmos he uses to track “illegal aliens.” Last April, Spencer set up remote control Internet cameras controlled from his home along the Mexican border in southeastern Arizona — “Operation Virtual Vigilance,” in the paramilitary parlance Spencer favors. At the time, he promised he would start sending unmanned aerial drones into the air to monitor border fence construction.

On Thursday, Spencer will trot out the results of his drone project, or what he calls Operation B.E.E.F. (Border Enforcement Evaluation First), at the National Press Club in Washington, D.C. On his website, he says he’s been sending a drone up every two months along a route stretching “from Texas to the Pacific Ocean, documenting the construction of the border fence.”

Glenn Spencer is no stranger to Hatewatch. For years, he’s peddled a racist conspiracy theory that suggests that the Mexican government is purposely sending undocumented immigrants northward in order to “reconquer” the American Southwest and, ultimately, transform it into a northern Mexican state to be called Aztlan. But in recent months, Spencer has expanded from his usual angry attacks on Latinos to furious, explicitly racist and anti-Semitic tirades that have caught the attention of many longtime Spencer observers. Consider:

• Just before Christmas, Spencer issued a nearly hysterical Web posting entitled “Obama Threatens Nation,” in which he described the incoming Obama Administration as “prepared to make a frontal assault on the sovereignty of the United States.” In fact, he said, “Barack Obama represents the greatest threat to the United States of America since the Civil War. Brainwashed Americans have just voted to commit national suicide.”
• The same month, Spencer wrote an article on his website with another provocative title: “Is Jew-Controlled Hollywood Brainwashing Americans?” In it, he assured readers that he had Jewish friends but added: “I fear, however, that this small handful of patriotic Americans are far outnumbered by liberal Jews who now have total control over our media.” He linked his posting to a report by well-known anti-Semitic theorist Kevin MacDonald, who Spencer has hosted as a guest on his radio show and whose work he recommends.
• Last fall, Spencer lamented the falling birthrate for whites and contrasted that to soaring Latino birth rates. The title of his posting (which was accompanied by the cartoon below): “White America Commits Suicide: The Coming Disunited States of America.”

It’s not like Spencer has been seen as calm and rational in the past. In fact, some of his neighbors and former allies have long been saying he’s out of control. In 2003, he was charged with four felonies after firing his .357 Magnum pistol into a neighbor’s garage because, he told police, he had heard noises that frightened him (later that year, the charges were reduced to a misdemeanor and a $2,500 fine). In 2002, Francis Williams, a director of Spencer’s own American Border Patrol, resigned, describing Spencer as “borderline xenophobic.”

That was hardly a revelation to many who knew Spencer. In a 1996 letter to the Los Angeles Times, Spencer wrote that “Mexican culture is based on deceit” and that “Chicanos and Mexicanos lie as a means of survival.” In 1998, he spoke in Cullman, Ala., at anti-immigrant rally hosted by the Council of Conservative Citizens, a racist group that has called blacks “a retrograde species of humanity.” In 2001, he had Betina McCann, then fiancé of neo-Nazi Steven Barry, hand-deliver copies of his film “Bonds of Our Nation” to every member of Congress (the video largely rehashes his Aztlan conspiracy theory).

None of this has stopped Spencer from being featured in mainstream media venues. He’s appeared twice in recent years on CNN’s “Lou Dobbs Tonight” and last year he debuted his video, “Border Truth USA,” at a three-day American Legion conference on illegal immigration (the Legion had earlier issued a report on illegal immigration rife with falsehoods and defamatory statements). Spencer’s American Patrol (also known as Voice of Citizens Together) has also received at least $11,000 in grants (pdf) since 1994 from the Federation for American Immigration Reform (FAIR), a major nativist group that has angrily rejected the label of “hate group” applied by the Southern Poverty Law Center.

    “Anchor Babies” ???

    This is also disgusting!!

The 2 officers could have been given clemency instead of a pardon. One of those terms describes total removal of the conviction making their slate clean. And the other term ref. to the release from further jail time, which means the convictions remain.
I forget which term refers to the 2 officers. Sorry about the confusion.

  • mountaingirl08

Latest Bush news. He pardoned the 2 border patrol officers who shot and killed the unarmed illegal alien drug dealer.

You have displayed your true colours by censoring my one and only post ever on this dispicable hate site.
God damn you liberal swines to hell.
    Liers and thieves.

Say Jonathon, I hate to break it to you, but anyone who interferes with efforts to detect and stop invaders by shooting down aircraft (manned or unmanned) isn’t referred to as a ‘patriot.’ TRAITOR and TERRORIST is more like it.

You clowns who buy into Morris Dees’ snake oil are demented. That guy is nothing more than a shakedown artist.

I’m glad I subscribed to HateWatch. I had completely forgotten about Glenn Spencer . . . and now this scumbag makes a reappeareance into my life. What about his compadre in scum . . . Barbara Coe? Is she still running amok, spewing this tedious hatred?
Mr Camp. Tedious hate? Tedious hate? Dear me, you are a bigot if I ever saw one.
Please read your post again and see the hate that spews from your keyboard. Where is this wonderful tolerance you profess to practice? If you are the embodiment of liberal tolerance, then give me conservatism any day.
In fact, this whole blog is filled with hate, hate for anyone who has an opinion that opposes your own.
    Liberal colours well displayed.

The surest way to catch a spot of trouble in your life is to mess around at the boarder. Whether it be playing at being law enforcement or shooting at anything.
The problems are VERY complex. Shooting at anything; people, drones, signs or tin cans is a great way to get yourself entangled in a mess that’s so far above the average Joe’s head: it’s like flicking stones at the Moon w/ a slingshot.! Those of us who live near the boarder KNOW what NOT to play around with.
Narco terror in Texas is so wildly out of control that it’s become a national security agenda. The level of cash injected into Arizona’s economy is beyond belief. 18 year old kids running around with $9K in their pockets doesn’t happen by magic. Middle aged ladies who spend thousands each shopping trip w/ husbands with a new truck don’t happen from “ranching success stories”.
The “idiots on patrol” are getting placed on watch lists. Most indigenous folks know, you don’t want to be at the wrong place at the wrong time down here. The people placing watering stations & those who destroy them are both taking chances with the DHS getting irate and pulling them into court. Your not just playing w/ dynamite here; you’re hitting it w/ a hammer!
The best method of dealing with that mess is to present the economic realities at the feet of independent lawmakers & letting your beliefs be known. Napolitano may be the right choice as she has seen many “sides” of the issue & knows the various complications.
This is NOT an easy answer situation, as it demands the co-operation of Mexico & Mexico can easily be politically destabilized if it does not have a “pressure valve” for the poverty endemic in it’s bizarre economic structure. Keeping all those people within it’s boarders may induce some very real possibility of de-stabilization.
The election of Fox was an example of PRI trying to look like it didn’t control the country. Fox’s election was also a chance for the Mexican Senate to say “look, we’re a democracy here”… But the truth is far from it.
It’s VERY tough to keep even an average cop honest if you can give him 5 times his yearly salary in one lump sum to perform some task. That happens on a daily basis. The (Mexican) Representatives stand to make hundreds of millions to simply stall any change. That’s one of the biggest challenges of Narco-run government.
The USA is going to have to make a serious effort to stop the money making agenda via drug law/”war” changes which will affect the economics of Narco-Terror. The biggest impediment to that change is that federal agencies like the DEA are not just drug cops. They are also a very effective intelligence agency & can provide cash for Black Projects for other agencies with no Congressional oversight.- THAT has been the real power of the continued drug prohibition. No one gives two shakes about some junky but a lot of people don’t want their cash-cow being disrupted or their foreign-domestic intelligence arm being scrutinized such as the FBI/CIA has always been.
The writing on the wall has always been “don’t even think of messing with the boarder”.

I wonder if anyone has looked into the idea of shooting down these drones they’re using? Keeping them tied up with buying replacements would be a good use of time, and a good way to have them use up their own resources.

We need some good, patriotic Americans near the border areas to keep an eye out for these drones and take them down when they have a chance.

Illegal immigrants aren’t the issue here. The issue is that hate groups have no bounds to their intolerance. They’ll just point their fingers at whatever bothers them, and open a bigoted campaign of propaganda in hopes of sparking racial conflict. Their issues all ball down to deep insecurities that they take out on other people, and for this reason they are a threat to civilized society. We must stand together to disrupt their divisive mission of intolerance. If this mission suits you, respond to this blog entry with an opening of Baze, and we can start working toward an offline discussion about a plan against racism.

  • Ruslan Amirkhanov

Actually since it is a proven and admitted fact that undocumented immigrants contributed more to the economy than they took out, they were hypothetically part of the solution to the economy and not the problem that led to this crisis.

  • Delaware Bob

    Where does one start?

I can’t say the ILLEGAL ALIENS are completely to blame for the shape of our economy, but they are a BIG part of the problem. The ILLEGAL ALIENS send BILLIONS upon BILLIONS out of this Country every year, money we will NEVER see again. Does this help our economy?

How about the BILLIONS the American taxpayers fork out for the ANCHOR BABIES, the schooling of them, the medical care and the list goes on, and on, and on.

How about the MILLIONS upon MILLIONS paid to jail ILLEGAL ALIENS for the crimes, then the cost to deport them. Does this help our economy?

Then you have these activist groups, the Catholic Church and the ACLU that want AMNESTY for these ILLEGAL ALIENS. It would be absolute suicide for this Country if AMNESTY were granted to the 20 million or so ILLEGAL ALIENS. We have more and more people out of work everyday and they want to add another 20 million to this Country? I say, “NO”!

If AMNESTY were ever granted to these 20 million ILLEGAL ALIENS, you can bet big money that 3 years from now, there would be ANOTHER 3-5 million ILLEGAL ALIENS demonstrating on our soil for AMNESTY. I don’t wish to lose my privilege on this site, so I will refrain from using the words that fit here.

An end MUST come to this illegal immigration. The perfect tool we have so far is E-Verify. It MUST be used by ALL businesses and Government Social Services. EVERY employee must be checked! If they are illegal, they are to be dismissed!

I believe it is time for all 50 States to pass a State law, like Arizona, Oklahoma, Mississippi, Missouri, South Carolina and a few others. It is time for these ILLEGAL ALIENS to go back to their home Country and get out of this Country. The problems they are causing will not go away until the ILLEGAL ALIENS are out of this Country. I think that is plain to see.

The “challenges” facing border states is quite clear to anyone who lives in the states that borders w/ Mexico. And obviously one them being the Narco drug wars between such cartels has already gained international attention. The good news concerning the incoming adminstration, primarily centered at the Homeland Security Dept. and replacing Micheal Chertoff is one of our own, Gov. Janet Napolitano D-Az. Why the “open borders” crowd are very diappointed and fearful of Janet is based on her record of taking special notice of the border problem. In fact, she was the only Gov. in the states that borders with Mexico to be an avid critic of Bush`s call to withdral the National Guard troops that were posted at the border. She have fought with Congress in this regard. It could be possible that she will live up to her agenda, unless the zionist intervenes in her decisions. The bad news is that she will do absolutely nothing address the untold corruptions and other criminal acts facing Sheriff Joe Arpaio and the MSCO.
Speaking of Mexico`s immigration problem, to whom they are referring to as their own immigration mess. They face an influx of immigrants from Central America who merely pass through Mexico to get to the U.S. Mexico as of recently as in 2008 had tried to take some additional measures in enacting its own immigration laws/enforcement. Because half of the people who cross into the U.S. are Central Americans. The drug cartels who control the coyote business, takes full advantage of this, through random kidnappings of the traveling immigrant for ransom money. Which is all too common. The Human Rights Laws in Mexico is virtually almost non-existent. News articles concerning drug cartels, governmental corruption and other Mexican political problems was forwarded to me by a comrade and that site can be found @

As the continued bloodshed spills at the borders and into our soil, I personally do not detest some of the “border groups” who are as concerned with the out of control narco-drug violence as any other rationale American. Its how they juxtapose all Hispanics into their vitriol. And how they use the illegal immigration debate to further their virulent racist cause.

One of the worst things those who “PATROL” the borders & rant about “Mexicans”(or whoever) is to blur the problems of illegal boarder crossing & bigotry. The issues involved in economics, human (& drug) smuggling, potential terrorism, & the exploitation of individuals is a very complex one & a great disservice is done to these problems when the bigotry issue makes a mockery of the depth & complexity of boarder crossing problems. These are potentially extremely serious issues that get tossed aside because some imbecile starts letting their pathology headline the discussion.

However, as one who has a few friends who live in Mexico, they are starting to have some serious problems themselves from illegal immigration. There is a distinct difference between legal & illegal immigration & it’s effects on the host country. Mexico is actually a rather wealthy country; it simply doesn’t have much of a middle class. It has extremely wealthy, wealthy, working poor, & deeply poverty stricken people. It also has it’s own social programs (such as they are) which are now being stretch to the breaking point by people flooding into Mexico as well as a lot of people coming BACK from the USA!
It will become much more apparent that folks who came here for work at a higher wage than they got in Mexico are not finding as many jobs as they thought!

The issues with our neighbor are very complex. I personally find it annoying when a complex subject gets reduced to slogans when idiots blur the issues.
This is also not to say that this is one–sided either! Plenty of people believe that every boarder illegal crosser can do no wrong & are just “victims”. Coyotes are not victims, neither are a percentage of people whose exploitative nature makes for easy headline fodder for the “civilian boarder patrols”.
But it takes plenty of maturity & impartiality to be objective w/ this issue. Many of us live in boarder states & know 1st hand what some of the challenges are.
