This turns my stomach. Wake up, students (and Americans), we aren’t and never were a homogenous society. It’s just that a bunch of middle aged white guys made it look that way to the masses. You live here, you contribute in some way, bingo, you are American.

These “youths” sound like bat sh@t crazy, right wing nuts trying to cloak their hate with some sort of “respectability.” I’m sure the protesters will show them the “respect” they so richly deserve.

I hate to stoop down to their level, but, Vandy is mostly snot-nosed rich kids who come from Republican Families with so-called republican, or should I say ‘Rushpublican’t, values. They should be deeply ashamed for this group that they have organized. This entire country, except for Native Americans, were all immigrants at one time or another. Who do they think they are? I’m just about positive there isn’t one Native American within this group.
I live 15 miles from Vandy, in a mixed heritage neighborhood and proud of it. On the other hand, if your not wealthy, you can’t afford to live in a 5-10 diameter of Vandy, unless you are stuck in the projects.
These spoiled brats need to open their eyes and see that we are all the same, regardless of skin color, language or religous beliefs. We all bleed the same color. It seems to me that Vandy ought to make an ethics class mandatory.

I am shocked and greatly saddened to hear this is happening at Vanderbilt University. In 1954-1956 I was enrolled at Scarritt College. Scarritt College, Peabody College and Vanderbilt University had a policy that if you were officially enrolled in one, you were eligible to take courses in the other two schools. Scarritt enrolled the first black students in 1952. The student body was made up of students from around the world. Many of them took courses in all three schools.

I’m surprised and saddened to learn that even a revered university like Vanderbilt is not immune to organized hate among its students.

I think the daze of we are all the same and we bleed the same color are for the most part dead and gone. The fact remains we are not all the same and I think understanding that will bring us to a realization that no matter who we are we can come together, good people standing up against bad.

ugh…
I’m a recent Vanderbilt graduate and I agree with the posts here… this story turned my stomach.
It’s so sad that these students can’t see that what they are doing is not a celebration of a unified culture (free of multiculturalism, right?) but rather a celebration of the white male patriarchy. They can’t see beyond their own privilege and see any attempt to reason with them as a liberal attack on right-wing expression and conservatism.
These are the same kids that think that racism doesn’t exist in this “color-blind” America that we live in.
It took this white female Republican and an interracial marriage to see how bogus those ideas are.
Maybe I need a new political party… I can’t be a part of this.

As a longtime ESL (English as Second Language) teacher, I can say from experience that “not wishing to learn English” is, for the majority of immigrants (documented or otherwise) a crock! English is a key, a tool, a way to obtain employment as well as valid status and green cards, and a real badge of honor among the people that I have the privilege to teach. There are ethnic enclaves, and even neighborhoods where many generations of a family live within doors of each other, And sometimes grandma or grandpa does not speak English: because he or she can shop, and do business and live happily in the area where his/her country of origin’s language is spoken by many, ALONGSIDE of English. This does not imply intended anti Americanism, or any type of political anarchy. I have seen this phenomenon in Spanish, as well as Mandarin Chinese and Creole! The ‘grands” are happy and comfortable while, the younger family members are busy with ESL/TOEFL classes, as most immigrants are. To equate this not-too-common situation with some sort of lack of ‘patriotism’ is another sad example of bigotry’s odd math: 2 and 2 make FIVE. And for the record, in MY classes, all my students are eager and willing to study English, and learn to adapt to the American “way of doing things” while bringing their own unique flavors to the U.S.’s mix. Which is why I love to teach these brave, fine people..and will continue to do so. I am even sadder to see that this ‘theory’ has had its beginnings in institutions of learning: universities. Alas.

“hang a Puerto Rican flag from your visor, whatever the case may be, and its not the same dedication to America that there used to be.”
Hello, excuse me Mr. Saucier, Puerto Ricans ARE U.S. citizens they just don’t get to vote, like the folks in D.C.

The root of the immigration issue isn’t putting down hispanics. It’s about acknowledging that our current system just can’t sustain out of control ILLEGAL immigration and a runaway welfare system. Budget concerns are not the same as hate crimes. Additionally, supposing that this organization is in fact motivated by racial concerns, is this really that shocking? Does anyone bat an idea when they hear about the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People. Clearly this isn’t a group dedicated to “bridging gaps.” Personally I could care less; if blacks want to hang out, or whites or anyone else, and merely dwell on their superficial similarities then so be it. It’s childish to thrive on shutting these dimwits down. If the YWC stands to be as successful as the NAACP has been in the least few decades, we can rest assured that they’re nothing more than ineffective hacks.

In fact, the Hustler never referred to Vanderbilt YWC as “white nationalist.” This way the heading is presented is slanderous.
