I don’t trust a Federal program that wants local mid-west law officials to enforce immigration issues.
For one thing, some of the things ICE has done are illegal even if it is a federal government agency. I have attended hearings already being held that challenge what ICE has been doing to immigrants. In the future, if there are trials in this country against those who have abused immigrants, no matter what their status, I would not want my name on the list as having been an abuser.
Second, immigrants who work in our communities are our neighbors. Most I have met work hard to learn English. As an English teacher and and also as a student of the Spanish language I urge us all to be patient with immigrants. It takes a good 7 years for anyone to master another language and the many immigrants I have met are trying very hard to learn our language.
Finally, I stand with Austin Mayor Tom Stiehm on his decision to avoid local “hate” type activities. May the federal government soon pass some good comprehensive immigration reform that works toward building families and our communities.
