Metro Council voted to extend an agreement with the federal government that allows the Davidson County Sheriff’s Office to check the immigration status of people who come through the county jail.

    While I understand the complexities of having local police involved with a detainee’s immigration status, is this really a “Nativist” (supposed to be a derogatory term) issue? Just because it involves illegal immigrants? If we tag anyone who has an opinion about immigration policy that might make it more difficult on illegal immigrants as a “Nativist,” what problem have we solved? We’ve called someone a name. Good for us.
    It seems to me that this is a legislative issue. If you don’t like the federal program, fight to have it changed or overturned. Leave the negative stereotyping of law enforcement and local leaders (with lawful access to a program they think can help their community, right or wrong) as Nativists in the waste bucket outside the door.
