KKK to March in Oxford
The Daily Reveille
/November 18, 2009
Multiple news organizations reported that the KKK was considering the march in response to Ole Miss Chancellor Dan Jones’ order for the Ole Miss band to discontinue playing “From Dixie with Love.” Jones issued his order after students refused to stop chanting the “the South will rise again” during the song.

What’s even more incredible than the article are the comments – all 3 (at the time I read it) were in actual praise of the KKK. Interesting (and scary) to see that Mississippi is still lost in the 1950s.

I am a black man, and outside of my hate for their violent acts, I really feel bad for the young of the KKK. Holding those resentments are like pissing down your own leg. No one feels it but the resenter, and it’s not a good, nor healthy feeling.
They’re also waging a losing battle, missing out on opportunities, to meet and experience great people, and their lives, being open minded I think has it’s value.
Give the children a break, oh ignorant ones.

I was born in Alabama in 1937..but was blessed that I learned early that “God created all humans to be treated equal in every way”…as a Christian white woman,I am so sad there are still those all over America that are in bondage because they have prejudices against others..and are voting into political leadership many who are so inclined…this will only keep bringing our Nation down to a dark pit..May God have mercy on America..

Allen, let’s be clear: the article linked is from an LSU newspaper, not from Mississippi. The comments are from LSU students (or readers and supporters). To categorically state that the entire state of Mississippi is stuck in the ’50′s is both false and incendiary. To note that there is an element among us here in MS that would like nothing more than to throw us back into that time, however, is correct. They are an element and by no means represent many of us here. There are a lot of good folks down here and to make assumptions based on Klan activity such as you have is misleading and dangerous. “Green Anarchism”, a neo-Nazi movement, is taking hold in the San Francisco Bay Area. To say the Bay Area is now stuck in the ’50′s would be absurd, no? If we want to fight hate we must begin by examining our own prejudices. Then we can begin to fight it in our communities. Sounds like perhaps yours is about folks in Mississippi?

I’m from Texas, which is sort of a part of the South like MS, and I’ll be the first to admit that my home state is a hotbed of hate. To me, KKK activity on the part of a few tells me that there are even more who are of like mind but just don’t join the organizations. I’d have to say that the judgment would have to depend on whether the locals back up the hate activity – in SF, I don’t see there being many locals commenting on the “Green Anarchism” in a positive way, but on the link above, they are. I’ve been to both MS and SF, and I think it’s safe to say that bigotry is thriving by far much better in MS than it is in SF.

I’m from oxford and I’ve lived here for 20 years. Not once did I see a KKK march. But a bus ride home from school, in 06, I have to say I saw one man in uniform but two seconds later he was arrested. There’s a lot of black family’s that live here and they’re treated just like everyone else. If it’s still around they don’t publicly show it.
