Y’know, I’d like to believe that there is some hope for everyone to be rehabilitated, that there is some small kernel of self-redemption in everyone that can be nurtured. But then, when I see that someone who is just so full of hate that they have spent 58% of their life behind bars I have to question if it is just not better, in some cases, to just throw away the key.

Allen presents an interesting perspective. In cases like these, I tend to question whether we can identify the roots of this kind of vehement hatred for the sake of rehabilitative and preemptive action – particularly because “rehabilitation” clearly hasn’t had any meaningful impact on DeMunguia.

(One exemplary hate & injustice prevention program is the SPLC’s Teaching Tolerance project. <>)

I also question whether there are promising alternatives or adjuncts to imprisonment for people who fell off the bandwagon of justice, and landed in the harbor of hate long ago.

Hatred that is nourished by roots we don’t assess and yank out of the soil can – and, as the headline above demonstrates, does – propel our world past the brink of catastrophic injustice outside and inside prisons. In addition to DeMunguia’s innocent victims, I have sympathy for the corrections officers and incarcerated people who will encounter him.

On date of said recent crime above. Mr DeMunguia and some friends were at a Cancer Benefit for a family friend. A cousin of Mr. Daley became intoxicated and proceeded to antagonize Mr. Daley ( his cousin) who in return, turned and walked away. The victim of the above crime, went after Mr Daley and Mr DeMunguia stepped in to prevent the attack from behind. Due to the lack of information on the above, I can understand how it could be misinterpreted. There was no hate crime nor racial crime involved as all parties where white and close in relationship. Mr. Daley is my brother and Mr. Hagan ( the victim) was our cousin.
The crime prior to this one, was a gentleman who attempted to break into the work van of Mr. DeMunguia. Which was reported to the local police. Later this same gentleman approached Mr. DeMunguia’s van while at a red light, reaching into the van with a knife. When Mr. DeMunguia retaliated in his defense, the gentleman told him that he would kill Mr. DeMunguia’s wife and children. Then proceeded to run in the direction of Mr. DeMunguia’s home. Mr DeMunguia exited his vehicle and the gentleman turned and darted into the home of a local police officer. Mr DeMunguia was charged with general fighting although no physical contact had occurred. His weapon was a carpet knife that was located in his toolbelt due to the fact he was on his way to work at the time.
Due to his personal beliefs a lot of this information was left out of the trial as it became a racial issue and not what it was. The many times Mr. DeMunguia’s wife and children were followed by this victim and the many times she ended up at the police station with her children in fear. None of this was told. Maybe when the justice system looks at facts and not religious beliefs, Mr. DeMunguia would not have spent so much time behind bars under the wrong assumptions and accusations.
Rehabilitation is necessary is such occurrences. In neither of the above, was the integrator of such charged nor served time, because they did not proclaim to be white supremacist. It does make a citizen wonder if her son will be prosecuted when he returns for the war. If he defends his family, his brother of war, and someone dies, will he become one of the ones that are here on your site. There are many hate filled people out there. Some very disturbing people.
Would you have felt the same about the above crimes if you had been Mr. Daley, or Mr. DeMunguia’s wife or two children?
