Buzz, your argument about slavery being the cause of the Civil War could explain South Carolina's action. It would not explain Virginia's action, much less Arkansas, Texas, and Louisiana. In Arkansas, less than 3% owned slaves. The only reason Oregon did not go slave is because they did not want Blacks, slave or free, in Oregon. The Oregon Constitution contained clear and specific wording that "Chinamen" and "Negros" had absolutely no rights. They could be killed with impunity. Many were.

Buzzy Thompson,

You are right in one sense. It's very hard to say that the Civil War was "about slavery" if the war is considered an act of Northern aggression. As a Civil War historian, I'm sure you are well aware that in the decades leading up to the conflict, slavery was constitutionally protected and reinforced through legislation such as the Fugitive Slave Act of 1850 and Supreme Court rulings such as Dred Scott v Sandford. I'm sure you are also aware that President Lincoln's sole objective was to restore the Union and that the emancipation was issued as an article of war rather than an amendment to the constitution. It is a fact of record that slavery did indeed exist in border slave states that did not secede from the Union as Lincoln had no constitutional power to abolish slavery without Congress. With all of that being said, I would agree that the Civil War was not "about slavery" for the North. That is not to say that Lincoln Republicans supported slavery or did not try to end it legally without bloodshed (a very important point that most people ignore). What is most ironic is that the current view of "states rights" as a Southern battle cry holds very little water except as a means of propaganda for Southern secession (or as you state, "to be free from you".) After all, as a historian, I'm sure you will see the hypocrisy of Southern slave states and owners seeking federal relief that invalidated the "states rights" of free states (i.e. Federal Slave codes and Dred Scott). I'm sure you'll also agree that Southern Jim Crow states had no problem seeking federal relief that authorized de jure racial segregation (Plessy). Just to be fair to another point of view Mr. Thompson, I ask you to consider this. The Civil War was fought between two opposing sides for two opposing reasons. For the North and Lincoln, the reason was simple, secession. In fact, Lincoln would have been in dereliction of duty had he not gone to war and would have been impeached. After all, all presidents take an oath to protect and maintain the union. From this point of view, the war was not an act of northern aggression but preservation. Remember this when you consider that the heroism of D-Day may not have been possible with a fractured union. Southern states seceded from the union to protect the institution of slavery and therefore their way of life. The issues of free trade and protectionist tariffs at the time were divided along sectional lines for a reason. Before shouting "states rights!" from the rooftop consider why the division? Free trade strengthened the institution of slavery and protectionist tariffs weakened it. In essence, the entire Southern way of life was built on the backs of slaves. Consider why Southern slave holders fought so politically hard to ensure the Wilmot Proviso was not enacted. Consider the threat that newly acquired federal land being governed as free states had on the "Federal Ratio" (three-fifth compromise). All of these politically charged topics of the time revolved around slavery. To deny this is to turn our backs from history. Southern secessionists knew that secession was considered an act of War and they counted on it (Fire-Eaters). They hoped to achieve through violence what they could not achieve politically. To that end, they sought not to be "just left alone," but to acquire new territory under more favorable treaties that protected the rights of few and subjugated the many. Respectfully, Mr. Thompson, I can understand why any Southerner would defend the honor of relatives past, but please keep in mind the terrible toll that slavery has had on our country and the national conscience. It is not a legacy we should forget and we should always hold in our hearts the debt we owe to those (slaves) that helped to build this country. As a fellow Southerner, I wish you well.

I think they should not unite into such a category because then they may really start to victimize themselves. If the Census acknowledges "Confederate Southern American" then they will be validated. Especially if they consider themselves the smallest racial minority in a country were they are in fact the majority and normative race.

Race is very interesting in this country; it matters yet doesn't matter. I try to overcome all the prejudices I've been socialize with. I began primarily by critically examining the media that is shoved down my throat at every turn.

I grew up in the South; have lived here my entire life, so I know the code words and phrases and attitudes of the racists. I know the whole 9 yards. And I'm telling you it is a cynical racist ploy to gain the support of all the ignorant and inbred bubbas that live in his state in their houses with their trailer hitches attached and wherever stupidity abounds. That would include the TBag people as well.
I bet McDonnell did declare his race under "other" and fill in Confederate Southern American.
What a moron.

Mr. Scharf, I just wanted to know who you were talking to with the "Aryan Airheads just like you" segment of your post. I just copied and pasted what you typed April 2nd, at 5:46. If you didn't type any commas, then I don't know how thy got there in the transfer.
Also, my user name refers to a Japanese artist who held beliefs about the peaceful coexistence of all humans. It's function is similar to a political button or bumber sticker. The only thing it has to do with ethnicity is that the person whose name I used was Japanese.
I agree with you that race is a cultural construct (again, Anthropology major), so there's no reason to call me (if you did, and I'd understand if you didn't) an "Aryan Airhead".
Summation: Who were you talking to earlier; "Tezuka fan" refers to a person you might not have heard of, my fault for using such an esoteric user name.
Sorry of the long-winded response, but I don't like leaving any confusion in communication.

Scharf: you might fool some people with all that supposed scientific goobly-gook but the fact, is that even those scientist who maped the human genome said that just about every human being on earth can be put in one of five different racial catagories. The FBI have been able to identify the race of serial killers by their DNA. Once FBI profilers thought a particular serial killer was white, but his DNA came back indicating that he was 85% black and 15% American Indian. When they caught him, he looked just like your average black man. What's really hypocritical, is the notion that no one questions the idea that President Obama is black ,even though he's half white, and yet anytime a white person tries to identify themselves as being white, people like you go in to this spill about whites being of mixed races ect,ect.. A black person has no problem knowing who and what they, and neither do white people, so you can keep that stupid double talk for someone who doesn't know any better.

I agree, it is state-sponsored racism! In Europe and Canada, everyone is just that, example, Canadian. In fact, in the Cayman Islands, a british OT, when a crime is committed, the paper will say, "the suspect was described as brown..."

Here in the U.S. race is factored in everything you do-employment, school, home loans.....you are asked to identify your ethnicty - insurance policies are based on ethnicity, therefore, communities, kinda like 'red-lining.'

Revisionist? Call me what you like. I don't care. If you think that war was over slavery them my friend the South won.... True that war and the 13th amend. said the Negro was free but was he? He plowed the field for pennies, not able to attend school, no vote and smiled until 1965. Lincoln didn't really free anyone. Johnson and King did that 100 years later. You stupid Yankee wouldn't even let a Blacks play baseball until 1946. Don't blame us we didn't even have a team until 1966. Freedom to slaves in 1865 was a joke. And you call me a revisionist! OK. You can win the next one too if you keep score that way.

PS: Did you know Lincoln's wife inherited two slaves. Did she free them? NO They were sold to finance his new law practice!!! Fact ; And I'm a revisionist.

Can you beleiev this guy claiming the white southern confederate american? Let me say something; I am from the northeast and spent most of my life living in the noth. In 2008 I moved to the south and I have listend and observed. The racism and belief in the way the south should be is insidious. You have to read between the lines to see how it's alive and at work down here. While the Alabama state and Federal politicians assualt and seek to undermine healthcare a disporportionate number of black families are uninsured. Any visit to a Hospital ER and you will see the whole family there, all are sick and you know this is where they get their primary care. All are sick, but the family memebr whose symptoms are worst go in to see the Doctor. The others remain untreated. You read the drug laws and the so called zones where penalties are most severe. Just by their proximity blacks are arrested with the additional charge of being withing 100feet of public housing, schools and Curches. Even if it's a Saturday when school is out this does not change anything. Just by living within these zones a person in their private residence can be charged with posession within a school zone. Enough

Frnkly I think your all a little off, race is just a way of saying area of origin because certain DNA sequences are dominate in certain areas. As for the Civil War yes it wasn't technically fought over slavery but states rights,
which was a way7 of saying keeping the antebellum lifestyle. Now that lifestyle was leaning worse then the Tower of Pisa and was going to fall of it's own accord. The south lost the war not because of the north having more supplies and men but because they wouldn't help each other to win, if they had won they would have broken up into who knows how many countries in the name of states rights. The southern aristocracy lived in fear of a slave uprising because of the unbalance of slaves to owners, if they had any brains thy would have freed them to go where they wanted or be sharecroppers. At least all this north south crap would be gone if nothing else, and they could still be the anti-union, anti-living wage snot holes that they are now.

Tuco, YOU are not a Civil War or slavery historian. Less than 3% of Arkansas were slave owners. I doubt if Texas had even that high of slave ownership. For South Carolina, slavery was among the issues. However, according to Dred Scott V Sandford in 1857, slavery was legal and Blacks were not persons under the Constitution. There was no Constitutional or Federal law against slavery until 1865. The 13th Amendment has an exception for those convicted of a crime. Until that time, there were slaves in the North and South. The Emancipation Proclamation was issued during the Civil War and only affected those engaged in making war against the US starting in Jauary of 1863.
Whereas, on the twenty-second day of September, in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and sixty-two, a proclamation was issued by the President of the United States, containing, among other things, the following, to wit:

"That on the first day of January, in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and sixty-three, all persons held as slaves within any State or designated part of a State, the people whereof shall then be in rebellion against the United States, shall be then, thenceforward, and forever free; and the Executive Government of the United States, including the military and naval authority thereof, will recognize and maintain the freedom of such persons, and will do no act or acts to repress such persons, or any of them, in any efforts they may make for their actual freedom.

"That the Executive will, on the first day of January aforesaid, by proclamation, designate the States and parts of States, if any, in which the people thereof, respectively, shall then be in rebellion against the United States; and the fact that any State, or the people thereof, shall on that day be, in good faith, represented in the Congress of the United States by members chosen thereto at elections wherein a majority of the qualified voters of such State shall have participated, shall, in the absence of strong countervailing testimony, be deemed conclusive evidence that such State, and the people thereof, are not then in rebellion against the United States."

Now, therefore I, Abraham Lincoln, President of the United States, by virtue of the power in me vested as Commander-in-Chief, of the Army and Navy of the United States in time of actual armed rebellion against the authority and government of the United States, and as a fit and necessary war measure for suppressing said rebellion, do, on this first day of January, in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and sixty-three, and in accordance with my purpose so to do publicly proclaimed for the full period of one hundred days, from the day first above mentioned, order and designate as the States and parts of States wherein the people thereof respectively, are this day in rebellion against the United States, the following, to wit:
Arkansas, Texas, Louisiana, (except the Parishes of St. Bernard, Plaquemines, Jefferson, St. John, St. Charles, St. James Ascension, Assumption, Terrebonne, Lafourche, St. Mary, St. Martin, and Orleans, including the City of New Orleans) Mississippi, Alabama, Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina, and Virginia, (except the forty-eight counties designated as West Virginia, and also the counties of Berkley, Accomac, Northampton, Elizabeth City, York, Princess Ann, and Norfolk, including the cities of Norfolk and Portsmouth[)], and which excepted parts, are for the present, left precisely as if this proclamation were not issued.

And by virtue of the power, and for the purpose aforesaid, I do order and declare that all persons held as slaves within said designated States, and parts of States, are, and henceforward shall be free; and that the Executive government of the United States, including the military and naval authorities thereof, will recognize and maintain the freedom of said persons.

And I hereby enjoin upon the people so declared to be free to abstain from all violence, unless in necessary self-defence; and I recommend to them that, in all cases when allowed, they labor faithfully for reasonable wages.

And I further declare and make known, that such persons of suitable condition, will be received into the armed service of the United States to garrison forts, positions, stations, and other places, and to man vessels of all sorts in said service.

And upon this act, sincerely believed to be an act of justice, warranted by the Constitution, upon military necessity, I invoke the considerate judgment of mankind, and the gracious favor of Almighty God.

In witness whereof, I have hereunto set my hand and caused the seal of the United States to be affixed.

Done at the City of Washington, this first day of January, in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and sixty three, and of the Independence of the United States of America the eighty-seventh.

By the President: ABRAHAM LINCOLN
WILLIAM H. SEWARD, Secretary of State.

Mr. Scharf, I don't think the Klan and the Neo-Nazi/BS/WS/WN groups will ever, by the very definitions of their groups, give up on their "race-quests". And as long as they won't give up, the government and groups like the SPLC and the ADL will never stop... stopping them. IT's like what Einstein said,
"The position in which we are now is a very strange one which in general political life never happened. Namely, the thing that I refer to is this: To have security against atomic bombs and against the other biological weapons, we have to prevent war, for if we cannot prevent war every nation will use every means that is at their disposal; and in spite of all promises they make, they will do it. At the same time, so long as war is not prevented, all the governments of the nations have to prepare for war, and if you have to prepare for war, then you are in a state where you cannot abolish war."

“The position in which we are now is a very strange one which in general political life never happened. Namely, the thing that I refer to is this: To have security against atomic bombs and against the other biological weapons, we have to prevent war, for if we cannot prevent war every nation will use every means that is at their disposal; and in spite of all promises they make, they will do it. At the same time, so long as war is not prevented, all the governments of the nations have to prepare for war, and if you have to prepare for war, then you are in a state where you cannot abolish war.”

If you think slavery was not a central issue for the civil war then you are not a civil war historian. You are a civil war revisionist. No one is trying to keep you or any of your confederate buddies in this country. You're free to leave anytime you want.

Tezuka fan your argument is specious. To say that "the government will stop caring about race when everyone stops caring about race" is just the opposite of reality.
James, your assumption that "race" exists outside of some bigoted cultural concept is denied by anthropologists. The blood and tissue donation issue you pose is also in direct opposition of the facts. There are countless HLA, yDNA, and mtDNA haplogroups in persons of any "race" your delusion can construct. There are near 200 different haplogroups for Y chromosomes alone. My yDNA haplogroup is J1e or J1c3 depending on which grouping you consider current. This group from Ethiopia to the mountains of the Caucusas. Even the association of "Caucasian" with "White" is based on ignorance like Aryan. Type O Negative is fairly rare, but it is distributed throughout the world. My H3 mtDNA or mitochondrial haplogroup is spread from the Middle East to Norway. To claim it is "White" is certainly ignorant. Pigment is genetically determined, but independent of race. One cracker in a genetics group found out he was L3. He looks like and acts like a cracker, but his L3 mtDNA haplogroup is certainly from the center of Africa in origin.

To answer the question of what race to check if someone is mixed race it is now legal to check more than one race on government documents. There is also the Other space to write in whatever you consider yourself.

Technically, writing in Confederate Southern American is legal. One suspects, as a long time government worker, that they will be simply listed as White/Caucasian when the census is put into the computer.

I am a civil War historian. I enjoy studing this conflict. There exist so many misunderstood facts concerning the the causes and the aftermath. My great-grandfather fought under Lee as a confederate soilder. Do you suggest I change my name an dishonor my heritage. "Forget it Mac". I will forever be a Southern confederate. Sure grandpaw lost the war. You had more of everything, what other result would you have expected. Lose a war,yes but Grandpaw then and every true Southerner today will never lose the "cause". You don't know what the cause was then or remains today. You think that war was fought over slavery. Oh how ignorant! Our desire then and now is not hatred but to be free from you. Let us go. Why do you want to keep something you hate so much!!!
