While some civil rights era murder cases and crimes were resolved by a court of law, justice struck the racist perpetrators with other fates. Howard Sims, one of two murderers of Lt. Col. Lemuel Penn was himself shotgunned to death by a friend of his June 1,1881. Harry T. Moore and his wife, dynamited to death in 1951, got justice when their four killers later suffered from devastaing illnesses. One was so tormented by guilt and fear of being caught then tossed in prison he committed suicide. Ex-Neshoba County Deputy Cecil Price died from a broken skull in May, 2001 after a fall. His former boss, Sheriff Lawrence Rainey suffered and perished from tongue and throat cancer, a terrible ailment Nov. 8, 2002 at age 79. The eight white men who kidnapped, beat and lynched 22-year-old truck driver Mack Parker in 1959 died of advanced age and the sickness that came with it. Some were punished in other ways, in private. Private hell. Justice may come in many forms, but it strikes hard. With and without a judge's gavel.
