Un-TruTV: Fear vs. Fact on Ventura’s ‘Conspiracy Theory’

By Evelyn Schlatter on November 22, 2010 - 10:30 am, Posted in Conspiracies

Madison, Georgia. Former Minnesota Gov. Jesse Ventura and “conspiracy expert” Alex Jones creep through the woods and hunker down beside a tree. Jones points through underbrush. Ventura leans forward, peers at something, and says in his ominous rumbling baritone, “What in the hell is this?”

The camera shifts to stacks of oblong black plastic containers. “Coffins,” Jones replies — each large enough to hold three or four bodies. Should the government decide to unleash a bioweapon to orchestrate a takeover of America, Jones explains, there are plenty of containers right here to dispose of the bodies. Ventura displays one of his signature glares — the kind he no doubt used to ice opponents while wrestling as “The Body” years ago — and points to nearby train tracks. Just in case the viewer doesn’t immediately grasp why this is suspicious, none-too-subtle images of World War II-era trains loaded with Jews on their way to Nazi concentration camps flash on the screen.

Welcome to Jesse Ventura’s “Conspiracy Theory,” which airs on Turner Broadcasting System’s cable network, TruTV. In this Nov. 12 episode, entitled “Police State,” Ventura works to prove the existence of so-called FEMA camps – “concentration camps” to be used as part of a U.S. government plot to round up and imprison millions of Americans so that unnamed “elites” can establish a dictatorship.

Scary, isn’t it? Ventura’s still-formidable frame and rumbling voice, backed by dramatic, ominous music, provide a sense of frightful urgency. How did we miss this? What can we do?

Before you panic, know that there are, shall we say, issues with Ventura’s “evidence.”

Let’s go back to Madison. What Jones (who is never identified as the conspiracy-obsessed radio talk-show host and webmaster of Infowars.com and PrisonPlanet.com) calls coffins are actually grave liners designed to protect buried coffins from the weight of the settling soil above – a standard element of American burials. The lot Ventura and Jones approached as if on a special ops mission is owned by Covington, Ga.-based Vantage Products Corp. Michael Lacey, Vantage’s vice president of operations, told Popular Mechanics — which has debunked a number of right-wing conspiracy theories, including the widespread fairy tale about Federal Emergency Management Agency concentration camps — that the roughly 50,000 liners stored in Madison is “nowhere near the quantity they talk about on the Internet.”

Ventura and Jones go on to allege that the T. Don Hutto Residential Center, a prison-like facility in Taylor, Texas, is really a planned FEMA incarceration center. Their evidence? Facility personnel wouldn’t let them in, and there is – oh, my – playground equipment visible through the chain-link fence. Slides and jungle jims at a prison? Just in case the viewer doesn’t immediately grasp why this is suspicious, a scene of Japanese-Americans incarcerated during World War II flashes on the screen.

In fact, T. Don Hutto is a former medium-security prison that has operated since 2006 as a detention center for undocumented immigrants. It is owned and managed by the Corrections Corporation of America and funded through the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement Office — which surely explains why Ventura and Jones couldn’t just walk through the front door. A lawsuit compelled the facility to install playground equipment for the children of detainees.

Ventura then offers U.S. House Bill 645 as legislative “proof” that the government is preparing to build more dreaded FEMA camps. Conspiracy hounds claim H.R. 645, the “National Emergency Centers Establishment Act,” would authorize the government to intern Americans.

Would it? Ventura visits Capitol Hill and confronts H.R. 645 co-sponsor Steve Cohen (D-Tenn.), who claims to have no knowledge of the bill’s “FEMA directives.” Evidence of a clueless politician taking orders from “elites?” Actually, it was the only answer Cohen could give — because there aren’t any FEMA directives in the bill.

H.R. 645 calls for creation of at least a half-dozen national emergency centers on military installations. Ventura never talks to — or mentions — H.R. 645’s primary sponsor, U.S. Rep. Alcee Hastings (D-Fla.), who told Hatewatch that the bill’s purpose “is to improve humanitarian relief to individuals and families displaced by a hurricane or other natural disaster. Hastings disavows “the paranoia of self-aggrandizing conspiracy theorists.” This legislation, he says, “contains absolutely no authority for the federal government to forcibly remove people from their homes in any situation.”

Somewhat like the proverbial broken clock that is right twice a day, Ventura manages to tap into one real controversy during the program: fusion centers. Seventy-two of these joint federal-state-municipal enterprises have been created since 9/11 to coordinate the sharing of national security-related information among various law enforcement agencies and the military. The ACLU is among several mainstream organizations that have expressed concerns about the centers’ ability to probe deep into the lives of civilians.

What Ventura and TruTV call “proof” amounts to little more than recycled and utterly groundless conspiracy theories. He relies on dubious “experts” — actually, fellow conspiracy peddlers whose affiliations are never clearly identified — and utterly ignores real authorities who could easily debunk the claims.

TruTV? In this case, hardly.

Interesting that those who choose not to accept the status quo, and ask a few questions are immediately lampooned by those who do. When a counter argument for the status quo is reinforced with name calling and the belittling, it makes one wonder the origins of such disproportionate responses. Curious responses indeed from those who are purportedly so confident in the status quo that they need to use third grade level drivel and name calling. Curious indeed…

  • Dee

It’s pretty clear to me that Jesse Ventura, bless him, took one too many bangs to the head during his wrestling career.

  • Ruslan Amirkhanov

Oh and please don’t get mad at me dear Truthers. I’m only asking questions.

  • Ruslan Amirkhanov

Frank, present evidence that “steel turned into dust.” Also, do you think that demolition charges turn steel into dust?(HINT: They don’t). And as for the video, which you don’t seem to want to watch for some reason- why do we not hear explosions? Oh let me guess- it was MICRO-NUKES and they are silent, right?

Oh one more thing, you claimed that the audio was removed from the mainstream media’s footage. Ok then, why haven’t the people who allegedly removed it come forward? That would involve a LOT of people.

  • Phillip

I’m sure glad our politicians are telling the truth so that we don’t have to worry about FEMA camps.

I trust the government, and the SPLC is good.

The official story for tower seven keeps changing, and I believe them.

I’m a useless sheep listening to this hate group called the SPLC.

  • Frank

I can’t go on certain sites on this computer so I can’t watch the video you posted until I’m on a computer where I can.

Did you bother to look at the things I posted?

“Somehow, with your whole troofer movement, none of these people are feeling the heat, nobody has a conscience, and nobody wants to become an American hero by blowing the lid on the whole thing.”

People are blowing the whistle on it, obviously. But of course the people directly involved in it aren’t going to come forward. Why would the people involved in this in the government, military and the higher ups in the media admit to it? They got what they wanted from it. I wasn’t saying that the journalists on the street that day were a part of the ‘conspiracy’. Some know what’s going on and some don’t. The ones who do know what’s going and have truth in their interests have been asking questions, hence patriotsquestion911.com, obviously.

And I have heard all the arguments you’ve brought up, but those have all been answered by others. It’s not new.

None of the ‘debunking’ sites have ever explained how steel can turn to dust just from fires and structural damages. Does 911myths.com explain that?

So, no. My questions haven’t been answered. But I guess to you we’re not supposed to ask questions in the first place, right?

  • Ruslan Amirkhanov

“If you can’t realize that you’re asking silly questions, I really don’t know what to say. If you were a part of a crime or a part of a coverup of a crime, why in the world would you admit to it? Would you want to be lynched in the street for admitting to being involved in something as horrendous as 9/11? ”

These aren’t “silly questions”. You are alleging that thousands of people were involved in a conspiracy to cover all of this up. Somehow, with your whole troofer movement, none of these people are feeling the heat, nobody has a conscience, and nobody wants to become an American hero by blowing the lid on the whole thing.

“Go back and watch the videos from the mainstream media of the collapse. THERE IS NO AUDIO OF THE COLLAPSES, just the talking heads running their mouths. ”

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v.....eature=fvw

Took me a couple seconds on Youtube. Do you hear a loud bang or rapid series of bangs that would be associated with such an amount of explosives? Do you realize how loud high explosives are? Even the sound of a single hand grenade exploding at a distance is deafening if you hear it in person.

“There are other possibilities besides the use of conventional explosivies, you know. Ever heard of mini-nukes? ”

Sorry, logical fallacy. Possibility does not equal probability. Why use something untested like that anyway? Can you provide some footage of a mini-nuke explosion?

“Also, what was in the debris at Ground Zero that sickened so many rescue workers has never been really addressed, either. ”

When buildings are destroyed, especially old ones, they release a lot of harmful chemicals in the air. Also, working in any place that generates a lot of floating particles is always dangerous, which is why people who work in such places wear masks.

“…Which you don’t bother to address. Maybe it’s because you don’t know what I’m talking about? I think you should go back and watch some of the footage from that day. I’ve watched 100s of video of the WTC Towers on 9/11.”

You clearly didn’t watch the video I posted in this comment.

“Structural damage, eh? Well, this must have been a very unique event which has never happened before or since! It even caught all of the authorities on that day off-guard! ”

Structural damage, you know, like a plane loaded with fuel smashing through the core of the building. And I’m sorry, buildings collapsing from fire and structural damage are not unprecedented at all.

“The buildings were designed to take the impact of a fully-loaded jet. They were designed to redistribute the weight of the impact. They had factored in all of those possibilities. Or are you smarter than the architects and engineers who built the Towers?”

The Titanic was designed not to sink, the Hindenburg was designed not to become a ball of fire, and the Challenger was designed not to explode in mid-air. How did that work out? Plus, they were designed to take an impact from a much smaller plane, low on fuel, at approach speed- not full speed.

“All that white dust wasn’t from the fires, obviously. That was millions of tons of steel blowing away on the wind.”

Do you have any proof of that? Is that what controlled demolitions do? Is that what mini-nukes do?

“Face it, you limit your “research” to the corporate mainstream media and don’t bother to ask questions and think for yourself.”

Yes, if we don’t accept ridiculous theories about mini-nukes, we never ask questions about anything and we believe everything the media tells us. Lovely false dichotomy there.

“Oh, 9/11myths.com is a debunking site, right? I own a copy of the 9/11 Commission Report. I already know what they have to say. I know all of the arguments. We’ve been fed all of that nonsense since the day it happened.”

Oh I thought you were into keeping an open mind, but apparently not. See you DON’T know all the arguments because several of the ones you made here are easily explained on that site, with sources.

  • Frank

Oh, 9/11myths.com is a debunking site, right? I own a copy of the 9/11 Commission Report. I already know what they have to say. I know all of the arguments. We’ve been fed all of that nonsense since the day it happened.

  • Frank

“What we DON’T hear is the explosions that we should hear when the explosives go off, and the best explanation you have is “the media didn’t play the explosions.” Nonsense. this would imply they edited them out. So why aren’t any of those sound editors or production managers coming out?”

If you can’t realize that you’re asking silly questions, I really don’t know what to say. If you were a part of a crime or a part of a coverup of a crime, why in the world would you admit to it? Would you want to be lynched in the street for admitting to being involved in something as horrendous as 9/11?

Go back and watch the videos from the mainstream media of the collapse. THERE IS NO AUDIO OF THE COLLAPSES, just the talking heads running their mouths.

“Do you understand what goes into rigging a building for demolitions? Even a small building can require over a month to rig, and when this is done the building is usually not safe because walls are knocked out, floors are drilled through, and beams are usually cut most of the way in order to facilitate their destruction. ”

There are other possibilities besides the use of conventional explosivies, you know. Ever heard of mini-nukes?

Also, what was in the debris at Ground Zero that sickened so many rescue workers has never been really addressed, either.

Neither has the fact that most of the steel from the Towers was shipped out in quite a hurry to China after that day. Nothing fishy there, I’m sure…

“The rest of your post is just a bunch of typical truther claims that have been easily answered by sites such as 911myths.com.”

…Which you don’t bother to address. Maybe it’s because you don’t know what I’m talking about? I think you should go back and watch some of the footage from that day. I’ve watched 100s of video of the WTC Towers on 9/11.

And I’ve never been to that site.

“Nobody is claiming they collapsed simply from fire and heat. There was also the structural damage.”

Structural damage, eh? Well, this must have been a very unique event which has never happened before or since! It even caught all of the authorities on that day off-guard!

The buildings were designed to take the impact of a fully-loaded jet. They were designed to redistribute the weight of the impact. They had factored in all of those possibilities. Or are you smarter than the architects and engineers who built the Towers?

“And nobody claims that the steel core turned to dust, which is absolutely ridiculous. ”

Well, they say that truth is stranger than fiction. Not my fault that you didn’t bother to pay attention to the footage that day because that’s exactly what happened. I take it you didn’t even bother to look up the video I told you look up?

All that white dust wasn’t from the fires, obviously. That was millions of tons of steel blowing away on the wind.

“Face it, you limit your “research” to conspiracy sites.”

Face it, you limit your “research” to the corporate mainstream media and don’t bother to ask questions and think for yourself. You don’t even know the issues of 9/11 that I’m bringing up because you haven’t bothered to spend a lot of time looking at the footage.

    Sad, really.

  • Ruslan Amirkhanov

No Frank, that is not how controlled demolitions look, and you know it. Of course the towers were loud when they collapsed, big buildings tend to make a lot of noise when they collapse. What we DON’T hear is the explosions that we should hear when the explosives go off, and the best explanation you have is “the media didn’t play the explosions.” Nonsense. this would imply they edited them out. So why aren’t any of those sound editors or production managers coming out?

Do you understand what goes into rigging a building for demolitions? Even a small building can require over a month to rig, and when this is done the building is usually not safe because walls are knocked out, floors are drilled through, and beams are usually cut most of the way in order to facilitate their destruction.

The rest of your post is just a bunch of typical truther claims that have been easily answered by sites such as 911myths.com. Here’s an example:

“Keep in mind that no steel building ever completely collapsed from fire and heat before or since. They’ve burned out but not turned into dust from it!”

Nobody is claiming they collapsed simply from fire and heat. There was also the structural damage. And nobody claims that the steel core turned to dust, which is absolutely ridiculous.

Face it, you limit your “research” to conspiracy sites.

  • Frank

“i just can’t see myself believing anything that someone who was and probably still is part of pro wrestling has to say”

That’s pretty arrogant of you. Knowing their track record, why should we believe a politician over a wrestler or anyone else?

I’m open to listening to anyone, no matter their profession, if they are interested in trying to bring truth to light.

  • Frank

I’ve seen videos of controlled demolition, and, noise or not, that’s exactly what it looked like and how it behaved. The media didn’t play the sound of the collapses during their live broadcasts or at any other time, anyway. I have watched a video of the South Tower’s collapse filmed on the street from a few blocks away by a regular person and it was so deafening that I couldn’t listen to a lot of it. It made my ears hurt.

There was known to be a blackout in the Towers a few weeks before the attacks. Workers reported ‘strange’ men going in and out of the buildings during this time. It was obstensibly for ‘maintenance’.

I have yet to see an explanation as to why the South Tower, which was stuck last and where most of the jet fuel exploded *outside* of it (which caused that giant fireball), collapsed first. Also I have yet to see an explanation for why when the North Tower, I believe, fell, a remnant of the core of the building stayed standing for a few seconds as the rest of the building went around it. Then, it turned into dust instantaneously and blew away on the wind. Can you explain to me what can turn a building’s solid steel core into fine dust in a matter of seconds, or less than a second without using high tech explosives or weaponry in your model? Video of this is found on Plaguepuppy’s site. Just Google ‘plaguepuppy 9/11 strange collapse of the spire’. (Strangely, while filming the pyroclastic cloud formed by the collapse, the film turns green for a few seconds. I found that odd. Gamma rays?)

Keep in mind that no steel building ever completely collapsed from fire and heat before or since. They’ve burned out but not turned into dust from it!

Lastly, why would anyone involved with setting up explosives inside of the Towers admit to it? That doesn’t make any sense.

The ‘official’ fairy tale is what’s illogical to me. It answers none of the questions that I and so many others have.

  • Seditious Blasphemer

In light of 2 seasons worth of fact finding and documentation by the researchers on Ventura’s show… coffin liners and an illegal immigrant detention facility is all Evelyn Schlatter comes up with to disregard everything all at once?

You all keep repeating what the MSM says — just like well trained parrots.

I’ll be over here checking the facts for myself, as should eveybody.

  • rice houston

    Show is great!!

  • Ruslan Amirkhanov

Sorry Frank, but you need to watch a video of a controlled demolition some time. People reported hearing explosions at various times and from different places. The time frame for these explosions is extremely wide(at least half an hour I believe). This is not what happens in CD. What happens is someone presses a button, and then, within a split second(if that), you hear LOUD explosions almost simultaneously. We don’t hear that in the videos of the WTC collapsing. Most people can’t appreciate how loud explosives truly are.

One should expect to hear explosions or sounds like explosions in a burning, collapsing building.

Of course it would be absurd to believe that the WTC could be secretly rigged for demolition without anyone noticing or any of the workers coming forward about what they did. Moreover, absolutely no trace of explosives or blasting caps were found at Ground Zero.

  • ruben

you said the magic word…..untrue…..i just can’t see myself believing anything that someone who was and probably still is part of pro wrestling has to say….although i did get a laugh or two from jesse the body ventura when he teamed up with gorilla monsoon as the broadcasters of the weekly shows…..don’t even attempt to take him serious.

  • Frank

There were multiple explosions heard by people on the ground and inside of the Towers and you can hear explosions in some of the videos from news reporters on the ground before the collapse of the South Tower.

  • Ruslan Amirkhanov

Far reaching expectations? So I can’t expect people to explain why controlled demolitions are silent for some reason?

  • Frank

I suppose you must have very far reaching expectations, then? I wonder what your definition of coherent is.

  • Ruslan Amirkhanov

“Common sense” is usually the defense of someone who doesn’t know what they are talking about. I have yet to see anyone come up with a coherent hypothesis- they all have one thing in common, they are sure beyond all shadow of a doubt that the “official story” didn’t happen.

  • Frank

“And your assertion that Muslims or Arabs can’t do anything coordinated like that is implicitly racist.”

Stop reading too much into it. I didn’t say that.

The FBI list is one thing, but apparently you haven’t looked into too many ‘alternative hypothesis’ if you haven’t found one that answers your questions. The official story doesn’t even answer a lot of questions, but you seem to be happy enough with that. But apparently everyone who doesn’t agree with you is a ‘yahoo’, so it doesn’t really much, does it?

I don’t mean to insult but the official story fails the most basic common sense, not to mention that it doesn’t even add up to what was going on on the ground that morning, before the media had a chance to whitewash the coverage.

I don’t really care if you agree with me. You can believe whatever the hell you want.

    Have a Happy Thanksgiving.

  • Ruslan Amirkhanov

“Yahoos? I wouldn’t call those people ‘yahoos’”

Of course you wouldn’t because you believe these people.

“Maybe you should take a look at the site and what the hundreds of people listed have to say before typing away. ”

For years I have dealt with hundreds of these people head to head and I have yet to see even one offer a coherent alternative hypothesis or answer my questions.

“But if you want to cling to the idea that 19 ‘fanatical Muslims’ (some of which were dead before the fact or still alive after that day) who barely knew how to fly defeated the nation’s air defense system, that’s your delusion that you’re welcome to cling to. I don’t really care.”

My delusion huh? See, even in your own post here you repeat falsehoods. None of the hijackers were found alive. Doesn’t it bother you that with all the people out there alleging this, nobody has actually collected the money to actually GO and talk to these allegedly alive hijackers and find out what’s going on? It’s only been almost TEN years since then. Nevermind- I’ll answer for you, the “living highjackers” story comes from a story in October 2001 which wrote about the difficulties the FBI had figuring out who these guys were due to several cases of mistaken identity. Several of these guys had names which are very common in the Middle East.

And your assertion that Muslims or Arabs can’t do anything coordinated like that is implicitly racist.

“Alex Jones throws in some of the truth with a bunch of right-wing nonsense for good measure. He’s just a fool. People need to learn how to be discerning.”

Yes, like you, who still believes there are “living hijackers” out there, nearly ten years later, despite the fact that nobody seems interested in actually tracking these guys down and talking to them. Everyone wants to “investigate” on Youtube apparently. Very discerning.

  • Frank

Despite my personal opinion of Alex Jones, I think it’s great that these issues are being discussed more and more openly. It’s wonderful that Ventura has his own show on a major network to present such material. I am only saying that people should be presented with different views and be allowed to make up their own minds. If you’re not comfortable with conspiracy topics, don’t bother with it then. Most people write it off without looking into it, anyway. But as with any research, you have to be discerning. Because there are some ‘yahoos’ as our friend, Ruslan, put it, but that doesn’t speak for everyone who brings to light things that the pathetic mainstream corporate media doesn’t want to cover.
    Think for yourself.

  • Frank

Yahoos? I wouldn’t call those people ‘yahoos’. Maybe you should take a look at the site and what the hundreds of people listed have to say before typing away. But if you want to cling to the idea that 19 ‘fanatical Muslims’ (some of which were dead before the fact or still alive after that day) who barely knew how to fly defeated the nation’s air defense system, that’s your delusion that you’re welcome to cling to. I don’t really care.

Alex Jones throws in some of the truth with a bunch of right-wing nonsense for good measure. He’s just a fool. People need to learn how to be discerning.

I think you should stick to ranting about the ‘glories’ of Communism.

  • Ruslan Amirkhanov

Interesting logic there Frank. So if Popular Mechanics doesn’t answer any group of yahoos on the internet, those yahoos must have a point.

Also what evidence do you have that Jones is a “disinformation agent”? Occam’s razor suggests he’s just a guy trying to make a buck, just like whoever it is who has convinced you that AJ is a disinfo agent. Clearly you’re just angry because Jones’ conspiracy theory isn’t your beloved conspiracy theory.

  • Frank

Alex Jones is a disinformation agent and a coward. But that doesn’t mean that there’s no truth to what you call conspiracy ‘theory’.
I wouldn’t trust Popular Mechanics, either, after their silly ‘debunking’ of 9/11 inqueries. I bet they wouldn’t talk to any of the people on this site:
    http://www.patriotsquestion911.com/

  • Ruslan Amirkhanov

Nearly forgot the lynch-pin of every conspiracy theory of this sort: Shadowy elites who control the world, and who have successfully pulled off hundreds of plots behind numerous historical events, are still currently scheming to unleash the big plot that will allow them to take over the world they already control. Yup, it totally tracks.

  • bc

The “FEMA Conspiracy Theory” sounds a lot like the plot from the 1st X-Files movie. If these guys want to sell conspiracy theories, they should at least be more original.

  • La Piovra

There has been some truth to FEMA detention plans in the past. Oliver North drew up such plans prior to his Iran- Contra difficulties. I have no doubt under the sun that they could be re-activated by a totalitarian regime… but that is not this administration, which seems to have not even one ball with which to assert itself. A number of us involved with litigation contesting the indefinite detention of (chiefly non-white) political refugees noted that the Reagan administration made far more sweeping arguments supporting the Executive’s power to arrest and detain without judicial review or Congressional restraint, even on the basis of race, than were required by the circumstances. I do not believe that this administration intends this; rather, I believe that right-wingers are, as usual, projecting their own intentions onto those they are planning to attack. The argumentum ad hitleram has been made ad nauseam, but a reading of Shirer’s Rise and Fall of the Third Reich, Churchill’s Gathering Storm, Rosenbaum’s Explaining Hitler, or similar works, might be most illuminating. If Congressman Hastings says a given installation or program is harmless, then it is: I had the privilege of interning with him when he was a judge, and know exactly what he thought of preventative detention. Nonetheless, some others would do it, given the chance (no names mentioned)

  • Ruslan Amirkhanov

Jones, like other crackpots, have been proclaiming this government-concocted cataclysmic event for the purpose of martial law for decades now. WHAT THE HELL IS TAKING SO LONG? Is it too much to ask the shadowy conspirators to hurry the hell up with the whole martial law/UN invasion/world government thing already?
