The Radical Right Reacts: Spinning the Killing of Osama bin Laden

By Robert Steinback on May 3, 2011 - 4:27 pm, Posted in Extremist Propaganda

Right-wing extremists, already reeling from the release of President Obama’s long-form birth certificate – the document many “birthers” insisted either didn’t exist or proved Obama really wasn’t born a U.S. citizen – were dealt another blow Sunday when the president authorized the military raid that finally extinguished America’s greatest single enemy, Osama bin Laden. But they pluckily soldier on.

How do you hate on a no-longer-Manchurian-Candidate president who can now say, legitimately, “Mission Accomplished” with respect to the leading criminal of 9/11?

Easy. Just fold in a heavy dose of bizarre reasoning. Some examples:

It’s all a lie. Barbara Coe, founder and leader of the nativist hate group California Coalition for Immigration Reform (CCIR) and a self-described member of the Council of Conservative Citizens (CCC) – a white supremacist group that has described black people as a “retrograde species of humanity” – begged followers not to believe the news. Claiming to have killed bin Laden was just a White House ruse to get the traitorous president re-elected, she declared. Indeed, your very life apparently depends on believing Coe:

“We are sure most of you heard Imposter OBAMA’s speech tonight, taking credit for the death of OSAMA BIN LADIN [sic],” Coe wrote, according to OC Weekly, which replicated Coe’s typically agitated print stylings. “HE LIES!  We hope, we pray that you did NOT believe him. OBAMA is a proven, radical pro-Islamic Muslim BUT will do/say ANYTHING to get re-elected. OBAMA has illustrated that he complies with Sharia Law – which demands Misleading or Lying (TAQIYYA) to promote the Koran’s mandate to torture, kill ALL non-Muslim ‘infidels.’ DUMP OBAMA (and his fellow-TRAITORS) or DIE!  YOUR CALL!”

Is he really, really dead? Andrew Breitbart – the notorious media manipulator infamous for publicizing strategically doctored videos that maligned the community group ACORN, Planned Parenthood, and black former Agriculture Department official Shirley Sherrod — posted a commentary by J. Michael Waller insisting that every American should have had the chance to play coroner to assure that bin Laden’s carcass is, in fact, bin Laden’s carcass.

“The free world, particularly the United States, has a right to make sure Osama bin Laden is really dead. Every American has a right to walk right up to bin Laden’s corpse and view it. We are entitled to know for a fact that the witch is dead. No shroud for dignity’s sake, please – bin Laden’s naked, bullet-riddled corpse should be put on display in lower Manhattan for all the world to see. The entire body should be digitally scanned, inside and out – and made available for everyone to take his or her own picture.”

(Brietbart, a committed enemy of liberals and Democrats, later posted on his website his own earlier tweet to demonstrate that he had congratulated Obama on the operation.)

Bad strategic move, Mr. President. Bryan Fischer, the slightly addled director of issue analysis for government and public policy for the anti-gay hate group American Family Association (see here, here, here and here), conjured up this doozy of an argument: Obama shouldn’t have taken credit for Osama bin Laden’s death because it will upset Muslims.

“This is a major P.R. problem for President Obama, and he does not even realize the size of the hole that he dug for himself … because he has taken complete, 100%, unilateral credit for the execution of Osama bin Laden,” Fischer said in an online broadcast. “All of that is fine as long as the Islamic world likes what you are doing. But the problem, Mr. President, is that Islam is at war with us. And you have just said that you are solely responsible for the death of Osama bin Laden. … You have just invited the entire Islamic world to focus all of their vitriol, all of their hatred, all of their animosity directly on you.”

Imagine what Fischer would have said had the president used such an excuse for not taking out bin Laden.

It doesn’t mean a thing. A number of right-wing bloggers stifled yawns regarding death of bin Laden. Capturing the sentiment, iconic right-wing commentator Rush Limbaugh offered a convoluted theory that killing the now-unimportant bin Laden would somehow weaken Obama’s reelection chances:

“This story about Obama being a shoo-in for reelection, if he was a shoo-in for reelection Osama bin Laden would still be alive today. … None of the realities that people face each and every day are at all affected by this. In fact, you could say – and you’d be truthful in saying it – that as a terror leader and somebody who posed an ongoing threat, Osama has been irrelevant for as many years as he’s been forced to hide out with no direct communications. … Look at it this way: Obama has just lost something that’s pretty important. Remember, now, Osama bin Laden and [bin Laden’s top deputy] Ayman al-Zawahiri and [Iranian president] Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, at election time, they put out talking points that sounded just like the Democrat Party. So in a way you could say that Obama has lost a voice for his reelection.”

A “coup” forced Obama to kill bin Laden. Leading Islamophobe Pamela Geller (see also here), executive director of anti-Muslim hate group Stop Islamization of America (and a favorite of white nationalists despite her being Jewish), claims to have an anonymous source who has revealed that a virtual “coup” inside the administration forced Obama to reluctantly launch the operation that killed bin Laden. Really. Geller on Tuesday published what she describes as the actual secret dispatch from her source, with formatting intact:

“RE Osama Bin Laden. Significant push to take him out months ago.  Senior WH staff resisted. This was cause of much strain between HC [Secretary of State Hillary Clinton] and Obama/Jarrett [senior White House advisor Valerie B. Jarrett]. HC and LP [CIA Director Leon Panetta] were in constant communication over matter – both attempted to convince administration to act.  Administration feared failure and resulting negative impact on president.  Intel disgusted over politics over national security.  Staff resigned/left.  Check timeline to corroborate.

“Now Intel already leaking to media facts surrounding how info obtained. Namely from enhanced interrogation efforts via GITMO prisoners.  Obama administration placed in corner on this. Some media aware of danger to president RE this and attempting protection. Others looking for further investigation.  We are pushing for them to follow through and already meeting with some access.

“Point of determination made FOR Obama not BY Obama. Will clarify as details become more clear.  Very clear divide between Military and WH. Jarrett marginalized 100% on decision to take out OBL. She played no part. BD [Obama Chief of Staff Bill Daly] worked with LP and HC to form coalition to force CoC [commander in chief] to engage.

“IMPORTANT SPECIFIC:  When 48 hour go order issued, CoC was told, not requested.  Administration scrambled to abort.  That order was overruled. This order did not originate from CoC. Repeat – this order did not originate from CoC. He complied, but did not originate.

“Independent military contacts have confirmed. Stories corroborate one another. This is legit.

“The killing of Osama Bin Laden was in fact a Coup within Obama WH.”

Wow, according to Coe, blacks are a “retrograde species of humanity.” What in the hell does that make white people? All whites came from black people, so if black people are retrograde–meaning moving or tending backward–and white folks lost their color…white people are even MORE backward. Need proof? Bigotry is nothing more or less a retrograde in intelligence. They hate their ancestors! Tsk, tsk.

Who invented the elevator? Who perfected blood transfusions? Who REALLY invented the cotton gin? Despite Edison’s false statement, the filament for the light bulbs invented, as the other things mentioned by black people. Retrograde? Methinks not. In case you think that that is all that black people havel invented, try this list:

Biscuit Cutter A.P. Ashbourne, Super Soaker Lonnie Johnson, Folding Bed L.C. Bailey, Bicycle Frame Issac R. Johnson, Coin Changer James A. Bauer, Space Shuttle Retrieval Arm Wm. Harwell, Rotary Engine Andrew J. Beard,
Car Couple Andrew J. Beard Envelope Seal F.W. Leslie
Letter Box G.E. Becket, Laser Fuels Lester Lee, Stainless Steel Pads Alfred Benjamin, Pressure Cooker Maurice W. Lee, Torpedo Discharger H. Bradberry, Disposable Syringe Phil Brooks, Pencil Sharpener John L. Love, Home Security System Marie Brown, Fire Extinguisher Tom J. Marshal
Corn Planter Henry Blair Lock W.A. Martin and scores of other inventions, all by blacks.

A well-known lie said that white men’s brains were bigger than black men’s brains. What they did was fill a white skull with rice and a black man’s skull with PING PONG BALLS, ergo the white man’s brain could hold more rice, so they were more intelligent. I wonder how those liars could say that with a straight face. Oh, me? Am I black? Nope. I am a white person who is grateful for all that black people have done to make this a better world. Thank you, I appreciate you.

Who is REALLY retrograde? The bigots who think they are better than anyone else, Would you do the world a favor? Drop dead, you are not needed. You have not improved humanity, nobody needs bigots,

    Buzzy Thompsom,
No thanks! I am voting for Pres. Obama.

Mr. Cain is anti-Muslim. And for sure he’s being used as a political pond by the GOP – meaning they’re at it again with their tricks, pit one black person against another black person, you know, like what they did with Michael Steele and Pres. Obama.

Don’t have television anymore, but, saw the video of him at, and I’m not impressed. I’ve left the republican party for good, and regardless of who the GOP run as a candidate, as a means to try to get votes, it won’t work. Besides, how will people believe the GOP will respect this black man if they won’t respect the one we have now! Not only that, since race relations is at a very low point in this country, there’s no way I would consider this candidate as a real candidate anyway. I believe this is being done to run him as a candidate in order to throw off the elections. Nice try though!

  • skinnyminny

    Buzzy Thompsom,
Is that the correct spelling of your last name? I’ve seen the spelling Thompson, but I have never seen Thompsom!

That’s not a very nice thing to say – you regret he was ever born! Is that what someone told you? Did one of your parents or spouse(s) say that to you? Dude, that sounds like some serious hate. This truly sounds like serious hate when (I’m certain) you have never met him.

The question I’d really like answered, are you a christian?

  • Ruslan Amirkhanov

“I’m a right wing zealot ,admittedly…. I don’t care where or when President Obama was born. I just regret the fact he was born. I could care less he has so called black blood. I’m just tired of everytime I disagree with him or anyone disagrees with him they are accused of being a racist”

That’s interesting Buzz, because as I have said repeatedly, I am opposed to Obama like many other posters here, and I am admittedly white, yet nobody calls me a racist. So if that’s what you are encountering maybe you should think about the content of your criticisms.

Attacks on Obama can sometimes be so radical or unfounded that people suspect latent racism, because one wonders why someone would believe every negative claim about Obama without any critical thinking, or why they cannot articulate their actual issues with Obama. Other times people are completely unaware of their racism; for example, have you ever heard people who get all upset about people saying Obama is the first black president, and they shout, “BUT HE’S HALF WHITE!!!” Honestly, anyone who sees Obama, not knowing who he is, would consider him to be black, yet when he succeeds, some people just HAVE to point out that he’s “not all black”(something which could be attributed to something like 75% of black Americans).

  • Leslie

    @Ranger G
News reports on the firefight in Pakistan ultimately killing Bin Laden are everywhere and as you point out the stories are constantly changing. What is surprising is that you think this is a reflection on Obama and not the news media itself–which feels compelled to report on every rumor before ascertaining the facts.

  • Ranger G

Let’s see here…the photo that dominated the media was Obama and crew watching the action “live” as it unfolded. Oops, well–maybe not. Turns out the video was blocked during the actual shooting. Wild firefight, OBL was engaged. Oops, well–maybe not. He was shot while resisting, but unarmed. But he WAS hiding behind one of his wives. Oops, well-maybe not: he wasn’t hiding behind anyone. On and on it goes; the president is utterly clueless on how to handle these things and it showed, painfully, as one gaffe after another dominated the media…and continues to do so.

  • Guardian

Well I’m hardly an Obama fan. I disagree with 99.9% of everything he and this administration stands for. But let’s give credit where credit is due. Obama did good on the Usama assassination call. It was indeed a gutsy move that I didn’t see coming. And personally I could care less about seeing the body. He’s dead and that all that matters. Sure Obama could have publically given credit to the Bush administration for the policies GWB put in place that started the ball rolling. But when it’s all said and done, it’s only the last lap of the race that matters. To Obama’s credit he did invite Bush to be with him at the ground zero celebration, which Bush declined for whatever reason, I don’t know. So, kudos for Obama. I hope this will lead to him making more good decisions in the future.

  • Buzzy Thompsom

I’m a right wing zealot ,admittedly…. I don’t care where or when President Obama was born. I just regret the fact he was born. I could care less he has so called black blood. I’m just tired of everytime I disagree with him or anyone disagrees with him they are accused of being a racist. That line is wearing out. Have you every heard of Herman Cain. He is one bright man. watch him tonight debate in South Carolina. By the way he is a black republican!!!!
    I laugh on

  • Ruslan Amirkhanov

” racist preacher say anything ugly in 20 years of attendance.”

Dick, what did Obama’s preacher say that was racist?

By the way, we’re still waiting for your evidence that Obama is a “domestic” enemy.

  • Sheila Fyfe

    To the aptly named “Dick,”

It’s just killing you that you have to give credit and show some respect now, isn’t it? Suck it up and be happy for your country. I for one am pleased that the last face Osama bin Laden saw was an American’s.

  • Martha

Obama caused the birther issue? Oh come on now. Poeple need to get a life – a real one! As for the rest of the hogwash – I can’t imagine where people get this stuff or why they think they have the right to tell this propaganda that is so obviously wrong. I do agree with the comments that this president can honestly say Mission Accomplished.

  • michael carmichael

Thanks for compiling this intriguing anthology of delusional fanaticism – most of it racist, much of it Islamophobic, all of it deranged.

  • Rebel1

the absurd use of race and the absurd mudslinging in this article is sickening. I may agree with the basic message of the article but it’s presentation proves the author is even more discrminatory than those openly being attacked.

sick, sick, sick – both sides of this childish arguement

  • TC

Wow, now Pam Geller is owning up to the sources within her head and the voices she’s hearing. Bold move.

  • Marcia

As far as Osama bin Laden is concerned, President Obama can truthfully say “mission accomplished.” Must be hard to take for all the conservatives and right wing crazies who blame him for every ill in the country but let President Bush’s incompetence and Vice President Cheney’s machinations go without criticism.

  • don

If “nothing can be believed coming out of the Obama Administration,” then why do you believe that Bin Laden is dead? Settle down, take a nap, and you’ll feel better. Really.

  • Dick Lancaster

Nothing can be believed coming out of the Obama administration. He caused the “birther” industry simply by withholding his birth certificate. We still know nothing about his scholastic achievements and he repeatedly denied his ties to left-wing radicals during his campaign; including the absurd contention that he never heard his racist preacher say anything ugly in 20 years of attendance.

There is no doubt that a mission to take out Bin Laden was successful. Had it not been, no one would have heard about it. But this incompetent circus can’t get its post action reports on the same page. I think this Seal Team ought to start looking for lawyers.

  • Mark

Ha ha ha you guys believe this crap? Left wing losers.

  • Jeff

So, so funny. If it weren’t so, so sad. Hard to imagine what their paranoid world looks like – it must be a projection of their own inner world.

  • Dennis

They can’t stand it that a black President accomplished in three years in office what a white President could not, or would not do during eight years in office!

  • Leslie

    Off topic:
In fact some Republicans vote against their own bills in Congress after Democrats decide to support them.

“In 1995, for instance, Republicans proposed cutting $270 billion over seven years. In 1997, McConnell and McCain were among the Republicans voting for a Balanced Budget Act that cut Medicare by $115 billion over five years. And in his 2008 presidential campaign, McCain proposed combined Medicare and Medicaid cuts of $1.3 trillion over 10 years. Yet last year, as he neared a re-election campaign in a state full of retirees, McCain led the fight against the Democrats’ plans to trim Medicare.”

  • Ruslan Amirkhanov

    Obama: Gravity exists.

Mass of Republicans, led by Glenn Beck: YOU CANNOT CONTROL US, YOU COMMIE NAZI!!!

    (glass breaks)

    thump thump thump thump thump…

  • James Hutchings

Obama should declare that the Republican Party is fit to govern. Then Fox News will belligerently insist that it isn’t.

  • A.D.M.

I am not an Alex Jones-wannabe and I personally think Alex Jones and his followers are way out there. However, I think the administration should release photos of Osama Bin Laden’s dead body. Wouldn’t you guys and gals want to see it? It might anger the Muslim extremists, but the photos should still be shown to the world.

Actually Iludium, we can see easily that the memos are definitely fake. First of all, the only possible meaning of “CoC” would be “Chain of Command”, which doesn’t make sense in this context and is negated by using the pronoun “he” later. I think what they meant was C-in-C, meaning Commander and Chief(also supported by the reference to the Administration).

The military does not tell the C-in-C what they will do and then reject an order to abort. Disobeying a lawful order from one’s superior is a crime according to UCMJ. You disobey an order from the president and you’re going to be down the hall from Bradley Manning.

This is basically nothing more than a chain e-mail that your right-wing uncle or aunt sends you with the subject line “THIS IS A TRUE STORY!! HONEST!!! SWEAR TO GOD!”
It is clearly written in the tradition of right-wing crank fantasies. In this case, the theme is the super-masculine military men telling the weak, Muslim-loving(possibly Muslim) president that they are going to take out America’s enemy. Said traitorous president doesn’t want to do so, because he doesn’t want to offend Bin Laden and instead wants to issue him a stern warning. But the badass SEALs prevail, and justice is done.

This is what goes on in the mind of many conservatives, who are in fact adult children.

  • Ian

Iludium makes a good point, especially considering what Geller expects us to believe about Obama’s long-form birth certificate.

  • IludiumPhosdex

How do we know the “memos” Pam Geller cited in “evidence” to her claims aren’t really forgeries in the “Hitler Diaries” stylee, only now made all the more realistic enough to fool even police experts in forged documents thanks to the likes of Microsoft Word and OpenOffice?

  • Ian

JUST like Ms. COE, I feel that RANDOM capitalization and a LOT of !!!!!1!! is the BEST way TO explain ONE’S point in a CALM, convincing MANNER. Also, I had no idea “Misleading” and “Lying” were proper nouns. Scrabble just got a bit harder.

Seriously, what is up with the far-right and the shift key?

  • Concerned Citizen

Yes. Bin Laden is dead. Obama kills Osama. These folks needs a reality check.

  • DrMJG

When the narratives of the radical right have been shown to be wrong, I do hope the media will start using the term liar when speaking of them.

  • Ruslan Amirkhanov

When 48 hour go order issued, CoC was told, not requested. Administration scrambled to abort. That order was overruled. This order did not originate from CoC. Repeat – this order did not originate from CoC. He complied, but did not ”

Who the hell is this “CoC”? If they mean the commander in chief, namely Obama, then this paragraph alone blows the whole story apart. The president’s military orders cannot be overruled. If he says abort, he aborts. End of story.

  • daemonesslisa

The rightwing’s reaction, while expected, is nonetheless sickening. It pretty much confirms the suspicion that these vermin truly hate America, and are frankly no different than the people who want to kill us; all you have to do is substitute “Obama” with “America” and it’s the same stuff.

On another note: equally disturbing—mostly because there might be a little degree of truth to it—are the people who are pretty much guaranteeing retribution will happen, especially because large segments of the population celebrated. To me, anyway, it’s almost like they’re wishing it to happen.

I’m not saying they’re all wrong or bad, but there’s a difference between “keeping ourselves vigilant so all future attempts at attacks prove unsuccessful” and “you all are gonna die and are gonna deserve it because you partied”.

So much for Unity; I didn’t see it on 9/11 and I’m not seeing it now.

  • Linnea

Oh, honestly. How dumb can the right wing get? They’re desperate at this point, and will say anything to try to discredit Obama… even if it means lying like a bunch of cheap rugs.

  • Jordan

Wow. A few years ago these kinds of claims were called schizophrenia, now they’re political discourse. There will always be racists, bigots, fanatics, and lunatics but how did they (in the 21st Century) become so mainstream? In 1995 if anyone had tried to go before congress and defend the civil war as having nothing to do with slavery they would have been laughed out of the chamber, had anyone questioned the president’s citizenship (seeing as how the president is the most extensively back ground checked individual in the country) they would have been booed off of the continent, Obama’s policies are no different than any other democratic president, the economy no worse or better than before, this isn’t the worst of times nor the best, there is only one thing that sets Barack Hussein Obama apart from his 43 predecessors. But we aren’t going to say it, the whole of America will pretend that calling the elected president a “radical pro-Islamic Muslim” is a critique of his policy, that accusing him of somehow falsifying his own citizenship (as well as altering the space time continuum to retroactively place his own birth anouncement in a newspaper in the past) is a criticism of his legislative endorsements. I always thought that one day the right-wing would go too far, say something too blatant and the subconcious racists and bigots would finally step back and hear what they’ve been spewing. Already we are at the point where at least one right-wing politician has started to openly call for the deaths of innocent men, women and children because of their religion.
I’m not really sure where ‘too far’ is now.
