As I understand it there is illegal immigration all over the world. Smart go-getters like them should be exactly the type of people any country should encourage to become citizens but it seems the governments look the other way because the business owners in all countries welcome a semi slave labor pool that they can pay less and basically treat like livestock.

It is unlikely that Mexico will get any real help from the US. The US, like its enforcer the IMF, is on board the SS Neo-Liberal economics. Keeping lenders and rich folks happy, at the expense of society, is the holy gospel of that ideology.

NAFTA, I think, was over jobs. Remember Ross Perot talking about the big 'sucking sound' of jobs and businesses moving from the U.S. to Mexico? Organized labor in the United States could not compete with the Maquiladoras and they too were concerned. The problem is in Mexico. Class and the concomitant income disparity contributes to migration to the United States. You may be surprised to know that Mexico's economy (the second largest in South America) is expected to grow by 4.5% and Reuters reports today that there is a "rekindling of domestic consumer demand following the 2008-2009 recession."
As the President said we need to do some nation-building in the United States. Mexico should do the same.

many of the immigrants coming into this country from the south do so because they cannot make enough south of the border to support themselves and their families, in part due to fallout from the NAFTA treaty I am told. Instead of spending so much money in efforts to find, punish and return these people, would this money not be better spent in efforts to shore up their economy so they can stay home and make a living wage.

Illegal immigration has a long history in this country complicated by a 'nod, nod, wink, wink' okay policy as long as you return home after the harvesting season ends.
What has changed? Competition for scarce jobs, increasing violence along both sides of our southern border, a confused and/or not well articulated federal policy and enforcement of illegal immigration.

I, for one, do not understand why it is a controversal issue to require employers to verify the legal staus of their employees.

Heck, felons who are born in this country, can't rent apartments if convicted of certain crimes. If we can legally deny shelter to this class of people why is it improper to deny employment to those who enter our country illegally? The former denial pre-supposes an illegal act WILL be committed while the latter proves an illegal act HAS been committed.
