Do you see anything there giving preference to non-Europeans? Even then, if you look at the actual process for legally immigrating and naturalization, it is a nightmarish process which in the best case scenario(being the spouse or immediate blood relative of a citizen), takes at least 7 years.

The 1965 act was not “Anti-European”. What happened was that the countries in Europe from which immigrants came in the past were either behind the Iron Curtain or experiencing positive economic growth. The 1924 act was the anti-European one since it cut off immigration from the European countries which provided the most immigrants.

The 1924 Immigration Act did indeed cut off immigration from Southern and Eastern Europe. You know- where most European immigrants were coming from at the time. But the Act did not ban immigration from Africa(it just typically didn’t happen, mainly because many African countries were colonies), and it also didn’t affect Latino immigration. So one could make the argument that it hit Europeans the hardest.

Now why did immigration figures change after 1965. Well let’s see, around 1924 most immigrants from Europe were either from Southern or Eastern Europe. Check. Now, what was the situation in Southern and Eastern Europe around 1965…oh…right…THAT whole “Iron Curtain” thing. That sure cuts off immigration. Even people from nations which weren’t behind the Iron Curtain had little reason to emigrate to America with all the strong social welfare systems their countries were building at the time.
