Gay-Basher Ann Coulter Named Honorary “Gay Icon” by GOProud

By Leah Nelson on August 10, 2011 - 1:43 pm, Posted in Anti-LGBT

As demonstrated by her 2009 complaint that the openly white supremacist Council of Conservative Citizens (which has called black people “a retrograde species of humanity”) had been unfairly branded as racist, far-right polemicist Ann Coulter has a remarkable ability to ignore screamingly obvious realities.

Perhaps that’s the personality trait that appeals to GOProud, which bills itself as “the only national organization of gay conservatives and their allies.” On Tuesday, the group announced that Coulter – who once called former Vice President Al Gore “a total fag” and declared presidential candidate John Edwards a “faggot”– had accepted an invitation to serve as honorary chair of its advisory council.

This is not the first time Coulter has affiliated with the group. Last September, she headlined “Homocon,” described in a GOProud press release as a “party to celebrate gay conservatives.”

“I can promise you, Homocon 2010 will be a hell of a lot more fun than chaining yourself to the White House fence,” GOProud Chairman Christopher Barron said in the press release.

Good thing he set such a low standard. Based on a report by Talking Points Memo, Coulter’s speech was not exactly the type of smashing success you’d expect to result in an invitation to serve as honorary advisory council chair.

“Marriage is not a civil right,” Coulter told the roomful of gay conservatives. “You’re not black.” She also said GOProud was a natural ally of anti-abortion groups, because, “as soon as they find the gay gene, you know who’s getting aborted.”

Even if it was more fun than being chained to the White House fence (a point that seems debatable), this is not exactly the kind of rhetoric you’d expect of a “gay icon” – which, according to GOProud’s press release announcing Coulter’s new position, will be her official title.

But desperate times call for desperate measures, and GOProud is nothing if not desperate. The group suffered a humiliating rebuff this year when the American Conservative Union announced that it would not in the future be welcome at the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC). Many hardliners found GOProud’s presence at the conference so repugnant that they boycotted the event.

As it happens, it was at CPAC 2007 that Coulter famously said, “I was going to have a few comments on the other Democratic presidential candidate John Edwards, but it turns out you have to go into rehab if you use the word ‘faggot,’ so I — so kind of an impasse, can’t really talk about Edwards.”

In what can only be read as a preemptive defense of the group’s unfathomable decision to make Coulter its official Gay Icon, GOProud’s chair said, “Politics is full of the meek, the compromising and the apologists – Ann, like GOProud, is the exact opposite of all of those things. We need more Ann Coulters.”

At least one part of his evaluation is accurate: For all her many deplorable qualities, Ann Coulter is neither meek nor compromising. It is simultaneously ironic and pathetic that by continuing to associate with Coulter, GOProud proves that it lacks the exact qualities it claims to admire in her.

Ann Coulter believes only in herself, promotes herself, and is full of hate for anyone that disagrees with her. She is too radical and only causes more harm than good by her far, far, far right opinons. Yes one can have opinions, but she is extremely hateful….and to that, she claims to be a Christian? Come on! Her attitude and the people who follow her, are not true Christians, as Jesus talk, ‘love thy neighbor as thyself.”

    Whats next? Jews for hitler?

The saddest part is that conservatives who add comments here just don’t get the purpose of the website. They seem to distort what they are reading into something that lines up with their right wing beliefs. Ann Coulter herself should not be in the public realm much less in politics due to her misrepresentations i.e facts that supposedly support her extreme right wing agenda. She just says what ever suits her beliefs and presents it as fact. Research never enters into it. Fabricating facts to agree w/her & her constituents views is the real problem with Ann Coulter. Don’t believe her GOProud (aka self-loathers)!

The “chaining to the White House Fence” refers to LT Dan Choi, an Iraq War combat vet who came out in protest to DADT – he was given an “other than honorable” discharge. for coming out & he has been trying to get back in the Army. He had chained himself the the fence at the White House in a peaceful protest against a policy that has since been rescinded & is in fact in the process of being dismantled. Despite our 1st Amendment rights to “petition the government” and “peaceful assembly”, LT Choi was arrested & thrown in jail. He is looking at losing his VA benefits (he has PTSD as a result of his combat experiences), as well as having to pay back the Army for the period of service he “owes” them, despite his repeated attempts to reenlist. This man is willing to return to the horrible maw of war that has disabled him, to be back with “his troops”. That these despicable, obviously self loathing gay Republicans can demean LT Choi’s actions speaks volumes. LT Choi is a hero, whether you’re gay or straight – Democrat or Republican – he deserves our respect.

“This site and its minions need to quit stirring up hate. All I see here is a display of hate for your fellow man and the right………..America wasn’t founded on that ideology.
You present no prof of your claims….just slander and hate….shame on the SPLC for allowing this to happen in their name! Don’t any of you own a Bible? Or is this an Anti-Christian site?
I was born and raised a Democrat, but this site makes me lurch with anxiety about the future of America”

    Coherency. Try it some time.

  • Mark

What, was Fred Phelps not available?!?!?

  • Aron Levy

I never said that, nor would I ever, ever even imply that. I was merely implying the fact that Coulter may, in fact be transsexual.

When I called her disgusting, I was referring to her personality and political views. Her physical appearance never came to mind.

Though I can see why you would understand my having written that. It was very poorly worded, and for that I apologize.

If you read any of my other comments you will see my attitude toward GLBT. (It’s very positive, btw.)

I hope I didn’t offend you. The only people I meant to offend were Ann Coulter and her ilk.

    Take care.

Thomas: The SPLC will take on folks who promote hate without regard to race/ethnicity, gender, creed (or lack thereof), sexual orientation, nationality, etc. You have to admit what Ann Coulter has routinely put out is hateful.

I think that perhaps the SPLC should consider stopping bashing women. I had no idea that this website was sexist towards women such as Ann.

  • Todd

More shades of gray in a nation of diversity.

    Another definition argument begging debate.

  • R Baker

I always thought she was just another republican lesbian left over from the Joseph McCarthy era.

  • CMcKEE

@ Laura: No one deserves Ann Coulter. No one. Not even gay conservatives.

@ Snorlax: you say this as though coming out as a lesbian were a bad thing.

@ Aron: So there’s something inherently disgusting about being a transsexual?

I am a lesbian, and I can tell you now, I know many, many gay and lesbian folks who are Republicans. The Southern Poverty Law Center is inherently non-partisan, because, as these commenters’ remarks show, hate knows no political affiliation. Remember, in the Jim Crow South, it was the democrats and Dixiecrats that called the shots.

  • Hunter Coleman

The author of this post seemed to gloss over Barron’s comment “…a hell of a lot more fun than chaining yourself to the White House fence.” Barron just said that anyone who desires to be treated on an equal basis by society should be treated as nothing more than a joke! Plus, he publically admitted that GLBT citizens are inferior to their straight counterparts! How this comment could be interpreted any other way is beyond me.

  • Laura Simione

    They deserve Ann Coulter

  • Laura Simione

I was confused enough by black conservatives this just goes beyond reason gay conservatives is a contradiction in term “It’s just wrong”

  • Snorlax

Does this mean Ann is finally coming out?

  • William LaBarge

I don’t know what the GOProud are thinking… or if they are thinking at all… I thought among conservative people, being honest was a great value to cherish… I think that I am right in saying that being honest WAS (but no longer is) a great value for conservatives to cherish. Quite sad that these GOProud are willing to sacrifice their sexuality… something that GOP don’t ask heterosexuals to do and that is to sacrifice their sexuality.

  • Roger MacEvoy

This must be the same phenomenon that brings some very visible, but also very limited members of other minorities into the Republican Party.
This could be a very important area for a long term study, why do some members of suppressed minority groups so readily join with those who exploit them the most.

  • Walterius

Ann Coulter is a great woman.

  • Anne Koza

Gay conservatives??? Kind of like Jewish Nazis???

  • linotypist

Gay Republicans: Analogous to African-Americans who want to be Klansmen.

  • Linnea

I think you’re right, Aron. Sad. I always thought it was good that there was a place in the GOP for GLBTs, but if they’ve stooped to this, I think the writing is *really* on the wall… that the GOP is a bunch of homophobes at heart… and anyone who doesn’t see that is deluding themselves.

  • Aron Levy

It’s simple: they’re a bunch of idiots. I can think of no other logical conclusion.

  • Linnea

GOProud must be a bunch of masochists. How else to explain this??

  • Aron Levy

There is of course, the always mysterious nature of her great height and prominent adam’s apple.

Maybe she’s a ‘gay idol’ afterall. Or at least a transsexual idol.

In any event, she’s utterly disgusting.
