‘Sovereign Citizens’ Guru Sentenced to Nearly Five Years in Scam

By Leah Nelson on October 28, 2011 - 1:00 pm, Posted in Extremist Crime, Sovereign Citizens

A Las Vegas federal judge yesterday sentenced influential “sovereign citizen” Samuel Lynn Davis of Idaho to 57 months in prison for his role in a $1.3 million money laundering scheme, the Las Vegas Review-Journal reports.

In 2009, following a three-year FBI investigation into activities by Las Vegas sovereigns, who generally believe they don’t have to obey most laws or pay taxes, Davis and co-defendant “Rabbi” Shawn Rice were indicted on 31 counts of bank fraud and money laundering. Taking about $96,000 in fees between them, they laundered $1.3 million for undercover FBI agents who told them the money came from stolen and forged bank checks. ( continue to full post… )

State-Certified Texas Gun Safety Instructor Won’t Teach Muslims

By Leah Nelson on October 27, 2011 - 4:16 pm, Posted in Anti-Muslim

Crockett Keller wants handgun owners to know how to be “victors, not victims.” That’s why the Texas-based concealed carry license (CHL) instructor, who owns Keller’s Riverside Store and HooDoo Ranch Realty (established in 1862 by Keller’s great-great-grandfather), teaches courses in handgun use and safety in exchange for $100.

He’ll accept cash, checks, credit cards, gold, silver or used guns.

But what he won’t do is teach Muslims how to shoot – or liberals, for that matter. ( continue to full post… )

MSNBC’s Pat Buchanan Reacts Furiously to Calls for Firing

By Leah Nelson on October 26, 2011 - 4:03 pm, Posted in Extremist Propaganda, White Nationalism

Pat Buchanan and his extremist allies are up in arms over liberal media watchdog groups’ recently launched campaign to get him fired from his news analyst position at MSNBC.

Following Buchanan’s Saturday appearance on James Edwards’ racist radio program “Political Cesspool,” to promote his new book, Suicide of a Superpower, Color of Change and Media Matters for America initiated a call for MSNBC to terminate Buchanan’s position. (Full disclosure: Color of Change was co-founded by James Rucker, a member of the board at the Southern Poverty Law Center, which publishes this blog.) ( continue to full post… )

Lively’s Letter to LGBT Community: I Love You, But You Are Sinners

By Ryan Lenz on October 26, 2011 - 2:21 pm, Posted in Anti-LGBT

Anti-gay activist Scott Lively has something to say to the LGBT community he has vilified for two decades on three continents: You’re all sinners, undeserving of welcome or affirmation from any truly Christian church.

But God loves you, and you should seek help. ( continue to full post… )

The Crying Shariah Game: Groups Protest Hotel Cancellations

By Leah Nelson on October 26, 2011 - 12:01 pm, Posted in Anti-Muslim

Anti-Muslim activists are crying Shariah again – this time, over the separate decisions of hotels in two cities to cancel anti-Muslim conferences and a former Maryland state lawmaker’s call for the cancellation of a third.

Yesterday, former Maryland lawmaker Saqib Ali issued an open letter condemning an upcoming conference sponsored by Maryland Conservative Action (MDCAN). “Instead of inviting legitimate conservative speakers, MDCAN has instead chosen speakers who are well-known conspiracy theorists, McCarthyites, racists and anti-Muslim fanatics,” Ali wrote in a letter endorsed by Muslim, Latino and LGBT rights groups. Christian Reconstruction Group Cruises ‘Patriot’ Waters

By Evelyn Schlatter on October 26, 2011 - 9:41 am, Posted in Patriot Groups

American Vision is a hard-line Christian Reconstruction organization whose current leader, Gary DeMar, has said that democracy should be replaced by a theocratic government run by Christians who will impose Old Testament prohibitions and the occasional executions of “sodomites” to drive gay people back into the closet. It’s no surprise, then, that American Vision has involved itself over the years with anti-gay and anti-abortion causes. ( continue to full post… )

Blogger Who Inspired Norwegian Terrorist Returns To Writing

By Ryan Lenz on October 25, 2011 - 4:54 pm, Posted in Anti-Muslim

Three months after Anders Behring Breivik unleashed a horror upon Norway in the name of anti-Muslim rage, killing 77 people in an attack intended to draw attention to the threat of Islam, the blogger-muse he regarded as Europe’s “most talented right wing essay[ist]” has re-emerged from a self-imposed hiatus. Oath Keeper Convicted on Weapons Charge, Attempted ‘Citizen’s Arrest’

By Booth Gunter on October 25, 2011 - 3:26 pm, Posted in Militias

All Darren Wesley Huff wanted to do was arrest some county officials in Tennessee who refused to indict President Obama for using a fraudulent birth certificate. The problem is, that’s not really a criminal offense. And Huff had no authority anyway.

But he was a member of the Georgia Militia and the Oath Keepers, both antigovernment “Patriot” groups that see the federal government – and, presumably, Obama – as part of a global conspiracy to establish a socialistic, one-world government.  ( continue to full post… )

Neo-Nazi Child Porn Enthusiast Reappears Under New Name

By Marilyn Elias on October 25, 2011 - 10:03 am, Posted in Neo-Nazi

Kevin Alfred Strom, founder of the now-defunct neo-Nazi hate group National Vanguard, apparently is trying to shuck off his former identity following release from federal prison three years ago on a child pornography conviction.

Hatewatch spotted Strom, born again as “Julian Dene,” a squeaky-clean gentleman clad in buttoned-to-the-neck white shirt, in a phony Facebook (FB) page that violates FB rules barring the use of fake names.

Could Dene be for real? There is an apparently real Julian Dene on the Internet, a blogger from Northwest England who identifies himself as a “retired semi professional photographer with a love of Victorian architecture.” ( continue to full post… )

‘Nullification’ Conference Attracts Far-Right Extremists

By Hatewatch Staff on October 24, 2011 - 4:56 pm, Posted in Antigovernment

On the eve of a Nullification Now! conference in Jacksonville, Fla., last week, the Tenth Amendment Center issued a warning: The Southern Poverty Law Center was sending someone to report that “those of us who want political decentralization as the Constitution requires [are] ‘dangerous.’” Then, when the conference began, every speaker repeated the warning. Someone from the SPLC was there, they said.

And you know what? We were. ( continue to full post… )
