In the question as to why Japanese immigration is not so high, you might want to first consider the high costs of living in Japan. Tokyo and Osaka are among the world’s most expensive cities. Tokyo has been the most expensive city in the world several times, and it might be at this time as well. Then there is a linguistic barrier which is difficult to overcome. Immigrants to France typically come from former colonies where French is still widely used.

Yes, a man who has established an economic base will eventually bring his family with him. But the separated family thing refers to children being born in another country to illegal immigrants then having the parents sent back while the children remain without their parents. That’s the problem in a nutshell: The “feeling” of being threatened is a totally irrational response. What, really, is the threat if someone new moves into the neighborhood bringing some different habits or values? Is it the threat that you might have to recognize that your own habits or values aren’t the only possibilities and might not even be the best? Unless you automatically assume that “different” means “bad” (which is simply xenophobia), that’s about the only real threat, the threat to your complacency and comfort zone. Pretty small cause for the kind of immoderate rhetoric and behavior we’re seeing from the far right.

There’s a difference between the right to feel threatened and the moral license (and wisdom) to act upon those feelings in any way desired. I have never said that we should be passive about immigration; what I object to is the lack of objectivity and pragmatism in the immigration discussion. For example, in our zeal to eject undocumented immigrants who have already put down roots here, we have separated families, made children afraid to attend school, and lost whatever sales revenue and consumption tax revenue that we previously realized when immigrants could still walk the streets without fear. How are unparented, uneducated children supposed to assimilate? How does the ejection of millions of customers help businesses? It is possible to have an immigration system that is more selective and orderly, while avoiding the problems that I mentioned above by forgiving the people who are already here.

European immigration is not as loose as people like you think it is, and Japanese immigration is not as tight. I found immigration and naturalization in Japan appears easier than the same for Russia, and if I remember correctly(I posted this info on this blog about a month ago) it was easier than in the US.
