Florence Man Pleads Guilty to 2010 Hate Crime

A Florence man pleaded guilty Wednesday to a violation of the federal hate crime statute for assaulting a teenager back in 2010. Chase McClary, 23, of Johnsonville, admitted during his guilty plea that in August 2010, he approached a black male, 16-year-old Matthew Shepard-James Byrd Jr., and struck him numerous times with the jagged end of a broken coffee mug because of his race.
