Reynardine — Yes — I am a regular at the local Ren Faire and am planning to go again next weekend (season pass, you know). I have been known to sport barbarian attire there.

I also have to say that I was rather said that, back in 2000, none of the Y2K stuff (demise of civilization, malfunctioning burglar alarms) happened, because I had been planning, back then, to don my barbarian-wear and pillage several local jewelry stores. Didn’t get a chance, though. (Sigh). I suppose it was just as well….

Does Erika have a sword? I would think she would have one (or be daydreaming about having one).

I have swords, guns, tomahawks, knives, a pair of Riddick Ulaks, and plastic things that don’t go off in metal detectors; and two, count them two, children. Oh man there goes the neighborhood.

I have several other swords including a larger, longer-bladed broad sword (a replica). It is a bit too heavy and long to swing easily inside a modern house (as opposed to a great hall somewhere), and I don’t like to bang up the walls, so I prefer my Viking sword, which has a nice heft to it and is enough shorter as far as the blade goes so that it works better for me (I’m 5′4″).

I also have a nice bronze war axe with a raven head sculpted opposite the nice, crescent-shaped chopping head. This is also a fearsome weapon, although probably not as visually terrifying as the Viking sword in the hands of the nude, fat, tattooed, red-haired woman.

So if a hammerhead ever actually physically invades, I’ll be ready!

Also, this horrible incident certainly does demonstrate why the assault weapon ban, which was allowed to lapse, was a good idea. If he’d had a smaller magazine and had to manually fire the shots, more people may have made it safely out of the theatre.

More guns for everyone — yes, definitely the answer, except that, living near Chicago, we get to see up close and personal that many of the people who end up getting hit are simply “collateral damage” a block away, so I don’t really think that MORE gunplay is going to make things better. Although it may be true that “guns don’t kill people; people kill people,” and “you can kill someone with a baseball bat,” assault weapons are ridiculously over the top, and as for the “baseball bat mislead,” yes — you can certainly kill someone with one — but if you swing and miss, you aren’t going to kill a toddler playing on the front steps of his or her house two blocks away.

Full disclosure: I personally own a sword that I have available in the unlikely event that I ever face home invaders. Lest you think that isn’t fearsome enough — and that the miscreants can simply shoot me — I think that probably won’t happen. I sleep sans pajamas, I have tattoos, and I’m not thin. I am of the belief that the shock value of seeing some middle aged, tubby, tattooed, nude woman with red hair rushing at them screaming with sword upraised will be off-putting, to say the least!

Other full disclosure — I have no problem with owning guns for hunting or even for home defense (although a handgun is rather inadequate for that — shotgun is better). I don’t even have a problem with concealed carry for some people who have a good reason to do so — and are adequately trained. I do have a problem with assault weapons and idiots who buy handguns without thinking through completely how they are going to avoid getting shot with their own gun by their spouse or an intruder (common outcome) and without having one of the stupid neighbor kids gain access to it, think it’s a toy, and shoot himself/herself or someone else (we grew up around guns and understood they were not to be played with or pointed at ANYBODY).

This guy’s blather cheapens the occasion and tends to ruin any possibility of the country engaging in a serious debate over issues, be it untreated schizophrenics with guns, health care, whatever.

In a just society, these “journalists” would be whacked over the head with a rolled up newspaper, just like a dog that makes a mess on the carpet, because that’s exactly what they’re doing to the American psyche 24/7.
