I work with a lot of people who, at least at first glance, may have odd or even icky ideas, but who, after you dig a bit further, (oh, God — now I’m thinking of “dig” in regard to intestines) their ideas may have some interesting bases in fact. I may not agree with them, but I am always interested in where people’s ideas come from.

Also, lame as it is to say, language — as in the words that get used — can sometimes lead to massive misunderstandings, hence my interest in probing (oh!) further and trying to determine whether we are, indeed, on the same page.

While some crimes are committed as part of a spree, other criminals (including groups of criminals), may commit their crimes serially — or they may commit a particular crime once, decide that it didn’t quite float their boat as much as they hoped it would, and do something else instead.

So the Imam or someone involved with it thinks gay people should be executed? If so, that’s despicable, and I don’t know anyone who is a progressive who wouldn’t think so. What is your point? Someone donated land? I don’t know the backstory there.

There are a lot of groups who actively agitate against LGBT persons. I don’t agree with any of them — including the Fundamentalist Christians who spread lies about them. But in terms of beliefs — there isn’t much I or anyone else can do about that except choose not to support such persons or organizations. I, for example, don’t patronize Chick-Fil-A, although I was unaware of the gay angle; my reasons for not giving them my business has to do with their anti-choice advocacy (although now I have another reason to avoid giving them my money).

It would be nice if we could, simply through talk, persuade people to “agree” with our beliefs, but that doesn’t always happen. I would — and I am sure that others would — step up to actively protest attempts to push for violence against LGBT persons (e.g., actively exhorting people to do violence to others, pushing legislation for capital punishment — It doesn’t appear from your post that anyone involved in the Mosque has done this, but several Christian fundamentalist groups were actively pushing for this in Uganda a couple of years ago.) To me, Chik-Fil-A’s owner’s stance doesn’t rise to this–it’s just bigoted. I expect that they will lose a lot of customers (but they may gain others who agree with their position).

As for your comment that we are “living in the 60s,” well, this is just plain mystifying. I think, if anything, progressives tend to live more in the future than in the past (some conservatives seem quite stuck in the past — as in the 50s, in terms of the “nuclear family” concept, or the 1890s, in terms of labor unions of women’s voting, or 1800, in terms of slavery). I say that we live in the future because many of us are aware that time is on our side, and that members of the younger generations are, in general, more tolerant of gay rights and a lot less racist or sexist (although there are some notable exceptions, some of which are documented on these pages).

I have to ask — what stake do YOU have in this? Do you think there isn’t any discrimination against LGBT people? Do you think that, if there is, it’s okay (or even appropriate). Are you simply angry because you don’t feel that the world is functioning according to your expectations? Or do you simply look for issues that you can get offended over?

The mayor of Boston, Tom Menino, so vocal in his criticsm of Chik-Fil-A’s homophobia, gave the Islamic Society of Boston, an organisation that counts Yusuf Qaradawi as its “spiritual guide”, a “spiritual guide” who has openly called for the death penalty for homosexuality, was given 1.8 million in free city real-estate so as to build a giant mosque from which, no doubt, calls will go up for the murder of queers.

Chik-Fil-A defends traditional marriage, something they’ve evedry consitutional right to do, and they’re raked over the coals.

Meanwhile, Boston’s principle Mosque, built on land donated by some ridiculous liberal officials, gets a complete pass when its principle “spiritual guide” openly advocates the death penalty for homosexuality.
