When one’s ‘free speech’ incites violence (especially reasonably foreseeable violence), endangers the lives of others and results in the death of others, one has stepped over the line and moved into the realm of criminal and civil liability.

I’d add that the regular Loonwatch Stammtisch deduced, as we have, that if this man committed an odious act he knew would inflame Muslims while pretending to be an Israeli with the stereotypical rich Jewish backers, he must have hated Jews and Muslims both and wished them to kill each other.

I wasn’t there but all those demonstrations were probably planned anyway. The leaders I think just used the movie trailer to make things worse.

Sam it might be a failure of intelligence but I don’t necessarily think so. Diplomatic posts live daily with this sort of thing. Generally they rely on local law enforcement to stop the crowds and Marines to protect the staff inside the diplomatic grounds. There is not a whole lot else that can be done (except maybe some radical changes in our foreign policy, say, spending 2/3 of our federal budget on helping people in foreign countries instead of spying on them and killing them).

In both cases, we’ve got certain diaspora members of a country’s oppressed religious community deciding to engage (from a safe distance of America’s shores, of course) in bashing and provocation of the majority population, in an effort to bring spotlight upon the causes of said oppression. Which succeeds in infuriating and provoking the demographic majority into further acts of violence upon an already beleagured minority. How’s that even remotely a “false” analogy? The riots can’t be pinned on the religion. If Islam were, as Solomon Goldenthal appears to be implying, “a religion of violence”, a far larger portion of the 1.5 billion Muslims would be rioting. As when a tiny sliver of self-identified Christians commit acts of violence (as noted by Reynardine, read through the Intelligence Reports for examples), these riots are being committed by a tiny minority of people who call themselves Muslim. The riots reflect the behavior of irrational outliers and are not therefore good indicators of how the religion is experienced and perceived by most of its adherents. The problem is extremism.

Perhaps it might be better to use a more cumbersome–but apt–set of wording, such as “violent, out-of-control mobs basing their actions on their own interpretation of ____ (you fill in the blank).”

There are a lot of persons who follow religions and take the best from them — such as charity and compassion — just as there are people, as we’ve seen, who grab hold of the very worst, or make interpretations that create twisted views and violence.

I think we might make more progress if we isolate actions and violent, crazy beliefs and the people who believe in them from blanket religious labels. This is basically what SPLC does — and I think they are correct in doing so. I also think (although no one asked) that it is easy to fall into demonizing other groups (e.g., “Well, isn’t this just like the _____) while separating the craziness and criminal acts from the groups with which we are familiar. We’ve certainly seen lots of this — “white” racists being excused as individual “crazies,” rather than “black” criminals who are, you know, “see, that’s what they do,” when in fact, that isn’t what African Americans as a whole “do.”

Reynardine — I agree with you regarding the very real threat we face from Christian extremists like Klein and his ilk. I am aware that there are mainstream Christian groups who are speaking out against the viciousness of groups such as FRC, but it would help if more individual Christians would begin to take notice of the hate being expressed on behalf of THEIR religion. After 9/11, we heard a lot about how “moderate” Muslims needed to condemn Islamic extremism; I think we need the same thing from moderate Christians.

Takes two to tango Solo-man. If Christians have the moral right to ge violent when their churches are attacked, Muslims have the same right when the Prophet is attacked. Violence is just violence and most Christians, frankly, are full of BS. The good book itself says only 144,000 will be called. That leaves about 1.99 billion hypocrites. So hush.

I love it when a professor (” “) refers to him or herself as “Prof.” (with or without a string of scholarly award suffixes). For those employed in academia, it is a big red flag, an indicator of an individual who 1) is pathologically arrogant, 2) is a crank or nutcase who lucked into getting a higher degree or obtained one during an earlier period before insanity moved in, or 3) bought a degree from a diploma mill.

I find it interesting that, while “Prof.” McCaffrey has no problem with crude insults to Islam, she suggests here ^[11] that insulring Sarah Palin should be as taboo as racism.

Seriously, your ignorance is so beyond breathtaking, you should sign up for some medical research investigating how a few profoundly retarded people can still function outside of institutions. The claims you make underpinned by “evolution” exhibit such an absolutely ridiculous perception of what evolution is and how it works that I wouldn’t even know where to start to begin disentangling and fixing it. Maybe a good starting point is to tell you that “evolution” has nothing to do with “improvement” in the sense of steadily growing more superior to previous incarnations within or between species, and everything to do with adaptation. While the headline refers to Klein’s links to Copts as a group, the article itself refers to his connection to only two individuals. One would think that SPLC, which works so hard to counter promotion of religious bigotry, would exercise great discretion in how it words its news reports to avoid tarring Copts as a group for the actions of two people.

It might have been better to refer to a specific group, but that is not all clear. Certainly, as Jamal said, you cannot implicate either the Coptic church or Copts in general. At the same time, when you are dealing with a slimeball like Nakoula Basseley Nakoula, who even assumed his nineteen-year-old son’s identity at one point, it’s hard to tell how many people are actually involved. It is as wrong to indict all Copts for the deeds of some fanatics as Muslims for Osama binLadin or Jews for Pamela Geller. Nonetheless, some kind of Coptic revanchist idea seems to have motivated these individuals.

I remember when SPLC fought against against actual bias crimes and actual instigators of violence. Now you’re all about labeling traditional Christians as anti-gay bigots and labeling a 100% perfectly reasonable expert on Islam like Robert Spencer as though he were instigating a 1930′s-era lynching. Spencer’s unsympathetic explanations of historical (and current fanatical) Islam on his website ^[12] are never rebutted with contrary facts but only by ad hominem attacks on him as a supposed bigot. SPLC has become a joke. It’s ironic that extremists Muslims who SPLC indirectly defends would – if given the opportunity – most virulently repress gays – to the point of violence and even death.
