I agree with Gavin Dillard about the headline (though not with the content of his tattoos). I’d estimate that at least a third of college students of a certain age have at least one tattoo, often something benign like a butterfly. The headline was unfortunate, because it seems to indicate that tattoos are themselves threatening or guilt-related. However, tattooing of NAZI and HATE is another matter. …

@Ezra. Couldn’t read the story in the Tribune, but I doubt the a hate crime was comitted in this instance. O think the crime was politically rather than racially motivated. Perhaps you should review the definition of hate crime statutes.

Gavin, I live in Volusia County, Florida. Though I myself have only the natural patina that comes from sticking my hands in large dogfights, catching other people’s runaway horses, chopping thorn hedges, and bathing cats, most of my neighbors, as well as my co-author, are embroidered like the Tapestry of Bayeux. That doesn’t bother me. Now, if they were embroidered with, “Exercise your Second-Amendment Remedies”, “KKK”, “Bitches are Made to Bleed”, or certain other items I shan’t list here- well, damme, I’d tend to avoid such people.

I am bothered by “tattooed” appearing in the headline, as if this somehow makes the guy scary. It is a prejudice and unnecessary. The guy is scary for other reasons, not because he is tattooed. I am covered with tattoos—all prayers or incantations for the Divine. Some of the kindest, most enlightened people I know are heavily tattooed.

In all fairness, he appears to be a psychiatric case, if an extremely dangerous one, and his racism is more likely to be a manifestation than a cause of his disorder. I note he has *not* been charged with a hate crime, nor does such a charge appear appropriate, from what has appeared so far.

I, too, am thrilled that they have this guy in custody, as it appears that he is very dangerous.

As for the tattoos — how fortunate that he has four fingers on each hand so that he could have one letter each to spell out HATE and NAZI on them. I get the impression that he is sufficiently deranged so that longer words would be tough for him to remember without having to take off his shoes and socks. It’s too bad he didn’t initially go with LOVE and PEACE (he’d have to use a thumb for the last one), as these words might have inspired him in a different direction (although if you sufficiently deranged, I suppose a sick mind would have transformed those words into RAPE and PIECE (as in “cut to pieces”).

Sad, very sad, that our country devotes so few resources to working with people when they are first identified as troubled. Perhaps he could have been helped to take a different path if they’d begun working with him when he was 14. Now I hope they just keep him away from other people so he can’t do any more damage.

There was the case of the “Tinley Park Five”, a violent left-wing gang, who beat up people in a Chicago area restaurant. They have not been charged with a ‘hate crime’, though the punks are still sitting in jail. This illustrates how ‘hate crime’ laws are used selectively to fit a political agenda.
