‘Jihad’ Ads on Chicago Buses Spark Outrage
Chicago Tribune
/Nov. 15, 2012
The controversial ads unveiled on the back of 10 CTA buses Wednesday read, “In any war between the civilized man and the savage, support the civilized man.” They conclude with the words, “Support Copts. Defeat Jihad,” referring to friction between Muslims and Coptic Christians in Egypt. Click here for full article.

These ads, as offensive as they may be to some; the pickets of the funerals of military members killed in action in our ongoing wars of adventure as a sop to the military industrial complex, by Fred Phelps and his gang of thugs at the Westboro Baptist Chirch are the prices we pay for living in a (relatively) free society. The solution to offensive speech is more speech, not less. How cavalierly we cede our civil liberties that were won through the efforts of our founders.

In Egypt, the best way to support Copts is by promoting interfaith dialogue between them and their Muslim neighbours. I for one do not understand how having “Jihad” ads in the middle of Chicago of all places supports the rights of minority Christians in far away Egypt.

Hate speech should be outlawed.
There is nothing “free” about a society that allows hate speech and the denigration of another.

Singling out white supremacist as the target of SPLCs subject matter could also be considered hate speech.
If my kids have to be subjected to porn on main street, you get to be offended too. The fact is we all get to be offended in some way. That’s the price of free speech.

Singling out neonazis and pointing them out to the rest of us is not hate speech, it’s common sense. Never roll in the mud with a pig; you will come up smelling like him and he loves it.
Yeah, it’s tough having to put up with the things you don’t like but the 1st Amendment was not put in there by very smart founding fathers ( today it would be founding fathers and mothers, with all the nice new diversity in the Senate and House ) not for the speech you like or approve of, but PRECISELY for the speech you hate.Get over it. Plug your ears or take a vacation away from the speakers. Yeah the ads are a dumb idea. You have a civil right to be stupid.
