More Links Between Alaska Serial Killer and Racist Theology Emerge
Confessed serial killer Israel Keyes committed suicide in an Alaska jail cell last weekend by slitting his wrist with a disposable razor and strangling himself with a sheet tied between his neck and extended foot, authorities say.
Before killing himself, the 34-year-old man, who was exposed to Christian Identity white supremacy beliefs and a survivalist lifestyle as a teenager, confessed to killing an Anchorage barista, a Vermont couple and five others he coyly didn’t identify.
The 18-year-old barista was abducted at gunpoint last February, raped and strangled by Keyes, who later dismembered her body and disposed of it in a frozen Alaska lake. Those remains were recovered after Keyes’ arrest in Texas in March.
Now, with some urgency, the FBI is piecing together a timeline of Keyes’ life while various law enforcement investigators throughout the United States are dusting off old homicide cases to see if Keyes, who traveled extensively over the past decade, may be responsible. Those cold cases which have foreign DNA evidence could be the key to identifying Keyes’ as the killer.\
Four of the murders occurred in the state of Washington, along with one in New York, before he randomly killed a Vermont couple in 2011, authorities say.
Keyes knew the names of his other victims, but never divulged their identities to investigators, Jeff Bell, an Anchorage police officer who interviewed the killer, told the Anchorage Daily News.
The weekend suicide is frustrating, Bell told the newspaper, because Keyes gave few clues to help locate his other victims’ remains or their families. While Keyes admitted to killing eight people, he indicated there are “a lot more” yet to be discovered, the newspaper reported.
Keyes was born in Utah to fundamentalist Mormon parents who later moved to Stevens County in a remote corner of Washington state, reportedly living “off the grid” in a cabin with wood heat and no electricity, various sources have told Hatewatch.
The undersheriff in Stevens County says her department has no links between Keyes and unsolved homicides there.
The Keyeses, who homeschooled their children, were neighbors and friends of Kirby Kehoe and his large family, including sons Chevie and Cheyne Kehoe, whose white supremacy beliefs in the 1990s led to a notorious series of violent crimes.
At some point, various sources say, the Keyeses and the Kehoes attended Christian Identity services at a church near the Canadian border, north of Colville, Wash., called The Ark. The Ark, which is now known as Our Place Fellowship, is headed by Pastor Dan Henry. The Keyes and Kehoe families also attended services at another nearby Christian Identity church, the Christian Israel Covenant Church, headed by Henry’s neighbor and friend, Pastor Ray Barker, sources say.
Christian Identity is an anti-Semitic theology that sees Jews as an evil force and claims the Bible is the history of white people. The most virulent Identity followers believe that Jews are biological descendants of Satan and are working to prepare the earth for the return of their progenitor, the Devil.
Pastor Barker married Cheyne Kehoe and Tanna Wilburn, and later facilitated Cheyne Kehoe’s1997 surrender to then-Stevens County Sheriff Craig Thayer, who acted as an intermediary for the FBI. Cheyne Kehoe, sought by the FBI after shooting at police in Ohio, later provided information that led to the arrest in Utah of his brother, Chevie, who subsequently was convicted of murdering three people in Arkansas.
When Barker moved to Stevens County from Gig Harbor, Wash., he briefly attended The Ark before deciding to start his own Christian Identity church that he operated out of his home until it disbanded after his death about 10 years ago, Henry said in an interview with Hatewatch earlier this week.
Henry subsequently has attempted to distance himself and his church from the Keyeses and the Kehoes, describing both families as “hotshots” in an interview with KREM-TV of Spokane.

Certainly, nothing in Israel Keyes’ behavior would link him to Dual Seedline Christian Identity. His three known victims, Samantha Koenig and a Vermont couple, Vermont couple, Bill and Lorraine Currier. All three are White, as is Keyes, which would not square with someone responsive to DSCI. Keyes confessed to five other murders before his suicide, but the victims have not been identified. It seems like the SPLC has seen an opportunity to stir up more hatred against Christian Identists.

How do you know Israel Keyes is ‘white’? There’s no such thing as ‘white’. Race is merely a social construct. Don’t you know we all share a common African ancestor? If there’s no such thing as ‘white’, then there’s no such thing as ‘white supremacy’ or ‘white racism’. It’s all an optical illusion. It’s all in your mind.
You claim Israel Keyes follows ‘white supremacy’. Now I demand you define ‘white’. If you cannot, then there’s no such thing. This is all a delusion.

Eugene, White, commonly referred to as Caucasian, anthropologically is from Turkey and Afganisten, roughly. I agree that race is a delusion, particularly now that DNA testing is so accurate. You among everyone here may share my amusement, previously posted, that our Federal Government spends a lot of money and energy going on about how Race does not matter, and an equal amount asking what Race you are on nearly every form it prints. Also noticed by others here, it calls Hispanic a Race, which is merely a group.

Technically, as some scholar will point out, Caucasians are named from the mountains in Georgia. The one in Russia, not ours. People still argue about it, but a majority considers Caucasians to live from Turkey to Afganistan.

My question is: At what cost?
To build a society that eliminates racism, it would require a massive police state. First, It’s really impossible to ever determine conclusively if someone is a racist. You would have to invent a machine that reads people’s minds. There would have to be a government police agency with a file on every citizen, reading their minds continuously in real time and data logging the result. Because someone could always be a secret racist, harboring racist ideas in their mind, acting out on those thoughts only in secret.

Let me throw some salt on that slippery slope, Eugene.
It is not the goal of society to determine if people are secretly racist. Racism can be eliminated by talking about what it means, banning racial discrimination, punishing hate crimes, and properly teaching schoolchildren about the problem of racism.
If someone secretly harbors some racist belief but consistently treats all fellow citizens with due respect and does not discriminate, it doesn’t matter.

Hello everyone. I was researching “Christian Identity” because I was trying to learn more of my husband’s unfortunate upbringing as a child. And his name is Chevie Kehoe.
Yes, I am the wife of a man doing life.There are SO many stories of the “Kehoe” family. I know what Chevie’s beliefs were back then but he is NOT that way anymore.
I do believe in his innocence. He is no angel. I know that… but he did NOT commit those horrific crimes that he is serving life for.
I do not condone his past actions… but that is just my opinion.
He has told me what he did back then…
(re: his views & beliefs on such)
He also says… “the only good thing about prison is that it taught him so much that he did not know before.”
He does associate w/ his family. From what I’ve experienced personally… some are a bit scary. Again, that’s from my own personal experience.
I was looking to meet & talk to anybody who knew Chevie personally.
In no way am I looking for trouble or any kind of problems.

Presumably, you’re suggesting that because Keyes’ murders don’t seem to have been racially motivated, his connections with the racist nonsense known as Christian Identity are irrelevant. But on the contrary, Keyes’ case is evidence that Christian Identity has an inherent appeal to the seriously deranged. I’m inclined to suspect that the most vocal advocates of it don’t believe it at all, but are simply using it as a way to attract the most crudely primitive religious believers to the white supremacist movement.
In general, it seems to me that genuine belief in Christian Identity must reflect an abysmal ignorance of the Bible, of history, of science and of human nature. The grotesque anachronism of retrojecting 19th-century racial pseudoscience onto a 2,000-year-old religious text is just the beginning of the absurdities of this cult. Skimming through the Bible and taking verses out of context and applying one’s secret magic decoder ring to turn them into references to the sacredness of “whiteness” is nothing but a game, and a thoroughly stupid one.

I don’t see the necessity of highlighting some miniscule exposure of somebody that corresponded with a few others for backyard get-togethers and attended a few times, a church that teaches that the Anglo-Saxon, Scandinavian, Celtic, Lombard and kindred peoples are descendants of the Twelve Tribes of Israel that were taken into Assyrian Captivity, and were divorced from Yahweh God who was their husband, and given a writ of divorcement and scattered in the wilderness of Europe and found new home in the isles of the sea. I don’t think Christian Identity followers (Two Seedline and Single Seedline) are deranged, I think they use it as a literary escape for the most part. I mean, when they say that “Gentile” is actually a relatively new word used for non-Jews, and point out that Hosea 1 and Romans 9 are connected, you can’t pass that off as abyssmal ignorance. Perhaps wishful thinking, but not ignorance.
You’re absolutely correct in stating that the murders weren’t racially motivated, and I believe that if they were, the SPLC would have more ground to stand on, but in my opinion, they don’t. Especially making *two posts* about the same story, citing “more links” when there really exists none.
But I can’t agree with all that you wrote about Christian Identity. It is obvious you have a very low opinion of it. My opinion would be more of trying to understand it. It’s easy to say White Supremacist Racist Hate Cult and be done with it, but I don’t do that. I like studying peoples, cultures, religious groups, etc.. There are some things that are odd, such as God being married to Israel yet Israel also being the firstborn of God, yet I can’t pass them off as all being stupid retards because they aren’t. And I don’t think Christian Identity can be appropriately labeled a “cult”. They have no single leader, nor are their leaders considered “God on earth” or anything.

Funny you mention the Pond, Peter. Christian Identity derives from a theological strain known as “British Israelism,” the idea that there was a lost tribe of Israelites who settled in what is now Britain.

These fringe racist groups are gaining far too many converts, due to the failing economy and the continuous influx colored people from south of the border. They are beginning to feel minoritized as they feel that they are gradually losing power. They are therefore, arming themselves to the teeth, home schooling their kids, teaching them survivalist techniques (as if they’re expecting some kinda war or something), and they are also teaching the ways of white supremacists.
The Future does not bode well for any of us, if this keeps up!
