FBI: Anti-Muslim Hate Crimes Remain Relatively High

By Mark Potok on December 10, 2012 - 10:23 am, Posted in Anti-Muslim, Hate Crime

Hate crimes against perceived Muslims, which jumped up 50% in 2010 largely as a result of anti-Muslim propagandizing, remained at relatively high levels last year, according to 2011 hate crime statistics released today by the FBI.

The bureau reported that there were 157 reported anti-Muslim hate crimes in 2011, down slightly from the 160 recorded in 2010. The 2011 crimes occurred during a period when Islam-bashing propaganda, which initially took off in 2010, continued apace.

The FBI statistics, which are compilations of state numbers, are notoriously understated. Two Department of Justice studies have indicated that the real level of hate crimes in America is some 20-30 times the number reported in the FBI statistics, in part because some 56% of hate crimes are never reported to police and more than half of those that are are mischaracterized as non-hate crimes. Nevertheless, the FBI statistics can be used to get a sense of general trends.

Last year saw continued high levels of anti-Muslim propaganda such as the crusade by some against the alleged Muslim plan to impose religious Shariah law on the United States. There were a number of local battles over the construction of new mosques, and several were attacked by apparent Islamophobes.

At the same time, the FBI statistics suggested that there was a 31% drop in anti-Latino hate crimes, from 534 in 2010 to 405 last year. It’s not clear what might be behind that drop, other than an apparent diminution in anti-Latino and anti-immigrant propaganda as negative attention focused on Muslims.

Other hate crime categories remained relatively steady. Anti-Jewish hate crimes fell from 887 in 2010 to 771 last year, while anti-LGBT hate crimes rose slightly, from 1,256 to 1,277. Anti-black hate crimes also fell slightly, continuing a trend of dropping from a high of 2,876 in 2008 (when Barack Obama appeared on the national political scene, fueling anti-black hatred in some quarters) to 2,076 last year.

    More epic failure from Eugene/Ezra/Jason/Annie!

There may be 300 million people in America, but except in his fevered imagination, they’re not all Muslims. So 160 hate crimes against American Muslims is a much higher percentage than Americans in general.

And Shockley got his Nobel Prize in physics, for inventing the transistor. That makes him a real expert on anthropology and races. More importantly, after developing the transistor, as stated above, he became crazier than you, if that was possible.

Now, let’s take YOUR anthropological studies…black women in supermarkets! How many supermarkets? Which supermarkets? Where were these supermarkets? What time of day did you go to the supermarkets?

Boy, there’s field study…why don’t you write up your term paper, put it on the web (you’re always telling us you could make a web page with your world view, but never do it), in the academic fashion that got you that Ph.D. in buffoonery, and stand up for what you believe!

After all, a disciple of American Renaissance, a member of the Aryan elite, shouldn’t have to worry about criticism from a bunch of “deviants,” “losers,” and “leftists” and “Communists” who live in “crummy basement apartments in college towns.”

So what’s stopping you from standing up there heroically, like Adolf or Jared himself, on your own web page and your own two feet and your own brilliant research?

Could it be fear and good sense? Naah…You have too much of the former and none of the latter.

  • aadila

    Rey, that’s disgusting.

  • adamhill

So Eugene, if I were to say that some populations (such as people living in Ireland) are historically susceptible to freckles, and then saw some white people in an American supermarket with freckles, and speculated that freckles are likely attributable to a genetic defect (skin mottling produced by “primative” hormonal production that is not experienced by more “advanced” groups of people), and then claimed that these people I saw in the supermarket therefore were “primative”, would I not sound like a complete idiot? So why is it that when you employ precisely the same declension of “reasoning”, you are not an idiot? Oh! But you are!

Listen: I know you’re patting yourself on the back, imagining that you’re really riling up the evil lefties with your watertight arguments, but seriously, that’s not what’s actually happening. You’re being laughed at.

  • Reynardine

In fact, Shockley wound up masturbating into test tubes and selling his jissom.

“Bantu” is a very elastic term. And no, I doubt that all the people forced into slavery were “Bantu” under even the most elastic definition. Dr. Coon fell into disrepute for falsifying data to support his prejudices. As a physical anthropologist, you do not come up to even the level of knowledge I had in seventh grade. Go disport yourself with your toilet seat, and don’t stumble over your nasal sill on your way out.

  • aadila

Eugene could also be a retired “birther”.

They have lots of time on their hands and of course nothing to do these days but troll.

  • Aron

You wouldn’t understand William Shockley’s work it you spent the rest of your pathetic life studying it. The man, while certainly brilliant, was also a crank. At the end of his life he had become so estranged from society that his children only learned of his death through the newspaper.

    Go suck on that, stupid.

  • Sam Molloy

Tobias, the SPLC’s Teaching Tolerance programs seem ideal, with no discernable political bias. They should be adopted universally in our school systems.

  • Eugene

    Reynardine, Aadila, Ruslan,

Do you admit that African Americans are Bantus?

Carlton S. Coon has a map in his book, “The Origin of Races”, that begins in the 16th century and presents the geographic distributions of ethnic groups. His argument is this because there has been so much migration since the beginning of the age of enlightenment, we have to have a proper chronological starting point for the study of Man. Coon was a brilliant man, receiving his Ph.D. from Harvard, he went on to become a faculty member, and eventually chairman of the department of anthropology. Furthermore, he is a modern contemporary. His career extended until the late 1960’s. I would put him in the same category as William Shockley, who won the Nobel prize in physics, and spoke openly on the race issue.

  • adamhill

Why are we not surprised that Eugene, Ph.D. failed Stats 101? The magnitude of a statistical effect is based in reference to the sample space, which in this case wouldn’t be the number of people in the U.S., but the number of Muslims in the U.S. Based on the numbers reported (just comparing percentages), there are no complicated statistical approaches even used for this data, but you still didn’t get it right.

Deliberately (or not) leaving out consideration of unreported crimes, past trends, and the seriousness of this kind of crime (which to you probably wouldn’t be serious at all–given previous rants, maybe you think hate crime is a good thing) is just more failure of basic adult reasoning on your part.

Either you’re a pimply adolescent (or a group of adolescents) giggling at yourself over these clever troll-posts, or you’re genuinely a racist (or group of racists) with all the predictable cognitive and lifestyle dysfunctions. Which are you, Eugene?

In either case, it’s never too late to grow up.

  • aadila

Eugene’s argument is flawed by logic because he fails to take into account relevant data, i.e., the root cause of hate crimes and the effects of groups, such as the SPLC, who document and track hate crimes and individuals who practice hate speech.

  • Reynardine

In that event, Eugene, it is of no significance when black women react aggressively to you for staring at their buttocks in a grocery line.

I do not believe you are a professor of anything. As for your hero, Dr. Coon, he was at one time mentored by Dr. Hooton, with whose work I am familiar, and enjoyed a high reputation. Dr. Hooton moved away from the type of racism that was at one time fashionable. Dr. Coon went so far the other way that he fabricated evidence for use by segregationist groups, whom he instructed never to attribute these “findings” to him. It was, however, found out, and by the time he wrote that book you are so fond of vomiting on us, he was already in very bad odor. That you knew nothing of more recent findings is pretty strong evidence that this is the extent of your credentials.

  • Eugene

Potok makes a big mistake in this article. There are over 300 million people in America. 160 hate crimes is a tiny number in comparison. It’s at the level of statistical noise. So of course, if you take a ratio of the two numbers, a tiny change in denominator will cause a huge change in the percentage. Potok can say “Hate crimes … jumped up 50% in 2010″. But a 50% increase of a small number is still a small number, and if statistical noise (small numbers in comparison to the total population) is jumping around it doesn’t mean anything. There’s no trend. Engineers and scientists see this all the time. You have to ask yourself, what is the size of your error bar (standard deviation).

  • Reynardine

Sol, if you had been that clear in the beginning, your argument would have been differently received, or at least we would have known you were making one.

  • Tobias A. Weissman

Eugene is wrong when he wrote that it is impossible to rid the USA of all hate crimes. There is a way and is a better system of School education from the youngest getgo. By teaching children when they are young right through Highschool and even beyond, the respect due to all human beings, to hold dear to differences of each other. You don’t need a Police State, just simple universal education.

  • Sol

    Reynardine what?

Of course I am Jewish. I am frustrated that while hate crimes against Jews make up 2/3 of all religious hate crimes, the headlines are all about Islamophobia.

I’m not saying Islamophobia isn’t a problem. Right now, you can get away with being a horrible bigot against Muslims and still get elected to congress. But that is because there is a constant anti Muslim media campaign.

My point is that even without that kind of campaign, even with antisemitism no longer accepted in public discourse, it STILL is the most common motivation for religious hate crimes.

It’s like that is the static state of things, that even with nobody pushing people to hate Jews, there are so many people that will never stop being bigots against us, and it makes me sad.

  • Reynardine

Thank you, Sam, for that reminder.

  • Sam Molloy

Yes, back on topic. It’s up to us to reply to any Islamophobia we hear with references to the millions of moderate Muslims we never hear about, and support Interfaith conferences in your city wherever possible.

  • Ruslan Amirkhanov

Riled up? No, I’m laughing at how easy it is to smack down your pathetic arguments.

Please, tell me again how I “contradicted” myself.

  • Supersonic250

Obvious troll is obvious. Going back on topic, Islamophobia is just getting worse, and doesn’t look like it’s going to improve any time soon. It’s important for us to raise awareness of this trend so that we can turn the tide and protect innocent people from harm by the ignorant and the hateful.

That’s all I have to say on the matter, I’ve got final essays to do.

  • John

sonic, i find it hysterical how easily bent out of shape you get over a statement..:)

  • Mike

Reynardine, I’m well aware of Supersonic having his rights too..(sighs)

  • CM

Well, one of my comments went missing. What I said was, “John” is metastasizing: John I, John II and “Mike” are obviously all the same person, and none of them have anything to say that’s worth hearing. Thus also “Richard” and the fraudulent version of Supersonic. It makes me wonder if he’s having some sort of breakdown.

  • Reynardine

Mike, you can pull that ramrod out of your spine. *You* have no idea how the First Amendment works. John is not only perfectly safe from government censorship, our Hays Office even passed him. Similarly, Supersonic is entitled, under that Amendment, to tell him what he thinks of these utterances.

  • CM

Add “Richard” to that list, too, and of course the pseudo-Supersonic.

  • Supersonic250

*Rolls eyes.* Yeah, I’m not riled up. I’m laughing hysterically that someone thinks they’re trolling me. I’ve got too much going on in my life to give a crap what a bunch of idiots on the net think of me.

Anyway, keep up the good work, Reynardine, Ruslan, and the rest. I’ll be around to help smack down the particular morons and crazies when I can.

  • Gregory

Rey, you know the thread has gone to hell when the sockpuppets start addressing themselves.

  • Richard

    Reynardine, either it’s 2 John’s or he’s havinga bit of fun..who knows?

  • Reynardine

Folks, look like we’ve got ourselves a two-seater.

  • Mike

and supersonic, unless I’m mistaken this is America..and you apparently have no clue as to how the 1st amendment works…John has a RIGHT to his opinion and you’re no one to take that away, kiddo..

  • Reynardine

“John”, you just apostrophized yourself? Interesting!

  • John

I never called anyone a bigot and which John are you?
Anywhoo, the reactions from the peanut gallery, especially Ruslan, Reynardine and CM,as I’ve said before, it’s a lot like poking fun at right wingers…different ideologies, same behavior patterns…

  • John

John my friend, my deal was to get you and your friends riled up, which is very easy to and your crew provide great entertainment…I understand hate crime laws and am not a bigot…I just get a kick out of all this..especially supersonic, he’s a card…

  • Mike

Also, you have no proof that John is racist..none of you have proven that..super, maybe your boyfriend isn’t spending enough time with you?

  • Mike

supersonic250, calm down..your immaturity is showing.

  • Reynardine

Is it just the flu, or does anyone else have the impression that Sol is no more a Jew than Pol Pot?

  • supersonic250

In addition, let me reassure everyone that I will never ever apologize for calling a racist on his stupid or his BS. You DON’T have the right to an opinion that is wrong or harmful to others!!!!

John I apologize for going off on you like have a right to your opinion, misguided as it may be.

Yeah, I DIDN’T WRITE THAT. Nice try, moron.

  • Ruslan Amirkhanov

And actually the funniest thing about you not understanding the difference between interracial crime and hate crimes, John, is that THIS VERY ARTICLE is about anti-Muslim hate crimes, i.e. hate crimes based on religion.

  • Ruslan Amirkhanov

You know what was funny, John? That time you accused me of contradicting myself and I totally shut you down because you didn’t understand the blatantly obvious difference between interracial crime and hate crimes.

  • IThink

    “John said,

Ithink, apparently I struck a nerve w/ Well, denial isn’t just a river in Egypt.. Ruslan you just contradicted yourself.. you leftists are so much fun to mess with..”

Uh no, Sir John Hobbit! Quite the contrary, the only nerve you struck, and of the clearly intellectually superior posters here who effectively cleaned your clock, we quite enjoy it when the wing nut trollies come out for an intermission thread circus.

Too bad you don’t have the class or calm turn of phrase of a Pat Buchanan and David Duke; both are of course diluted and ever-irrelevant white supremacists but at least they know how to never give the more Hitler-esque tendencies of their politics away so easily. They also know how to not start fights, or in this case, debates, they know they’re not going to win in the public forum. Your observation is about as redundant and worthy of a response as a pulitzer-nominated marine biologist declaring there’s water at the bottom of the ocean. You want a saltine with peanut butter next time you aim right into the toilet seat, cracker?

P.S.-The fact that you would draw any sort of false equivalencies between the far right and left, the latter of which is non-existent in America as is and has been for some time, proves would should give your opinions on anyone’s collective behavior the same consideration we give the freshest animal dung at the edge of the forest. ‘Til next time indeed; bring an actual case to this court house of debate and you won’t walk away with two black(er) eyes and your scarred tail between your legs…

    Ezra/Jason/Annie/Eugene/”Ph.D. With a Thousand Faces:”

Here is your test. Please use a No. 2 pencil and answer all questions.

    1. If you’re here to “debate leftists,” why are you ignoring their responses?
    2. If you don’t read “their posts anymore,” why are you here?
    3. How can you have their posts on “permanent ignore,” when they’re put on a weblog, not sent in a stand-alone e-mail to you?
    4. When you have had a “real job and a wife and family, and a nice home and car he worked for?”
    5. Why should Ruslan Amirkhanov “go away?” Are you the webmaster of this site?
    6. How do you propose to enforce that demand?
    7. Do you seriously expect anybody to obey your demands at this point? You have already stated that we are “crazy,” so why are you issuing them?
    8. If Ruslan is a “crazy person” and you “don’t read him,” why should it matter if he is here or not?
    9. On that line, why should it matter what he writes? Is he ruining your life?
    10. You have repeatedly stated that what appears on this web page “does not matter” and is “not important.” Why, then, are you so concerned with it?
    11. Do you believe that freedom of speech only applies to you?
    12. What legal or racial theory is that based on?
    13. How are you such an expert on the lifestyles of leftists?
    14. According to you leftists “all probably live in a college town in a crummy basement apartment, doing drugs, with no job, never even had a girlfriend. They’re probably all gay, unattractive, effeminate, overweight slobs. Basically deviants. So they get mad when the see a normal healthy man who has a job, looks good, is clean cut, and has a real job and a wife and family, and has a nice home and car he worked for. So these losers are all jealous.” If “leftists” are “deviants” in the first place, why would they be “jealous” of others?
    15. Leftists include Theodore Roosevelt, Woodrow Wilson, Franklin D. Roosevelt, Harry S. Truman, and John F. Kennedy. Were any of them “gay, unattractive, effeminate, overweight slobs?”
    16. Leftist war heroes include Theodore Roosevelt (Spanish-American War), Harry S. Truman (World War I and dropper of two atomic bombs), John F. Kennedy (World War II), George McGovern (World War II), Al Gore (Vietnam), and John Kerry (Vietnam). Were they “gay, unattractive, effeminate, overweight slobs?”
    17. Does the term “projection” mean anything to you?
    18. In one of your many incarnations, you have urged your opponents to do the following: “I urge both of you to focus your lives on real world issues that will improve your lives, such as getting a better paying job, joining the military, getting married, saving up to buy a home, or doing anything that will make a real man out of you.” Have you done any of the above?
    19. If you have joined the military, please list your service branch, medals, and campaigns.
    20. You have also stated, “The posters on here are all a bunch of anti-white bigots and haters. They speak nothing but lies.” Why are you therefore continuing to engage “liars” in dialogue?
    21. Why are you so obsessed with the sexuality of leftists and whether or not they have girlfriends?
    22. You indicate that leftists are “gay.” Why would a gay person be “jealous” of someone with a “wife” of the opposite sex?
    23. Where did you gain you expertise in gay lifestyles?
    24. Why have you changed your sex in your names?
    25. You say that all leftists “live in college towns in crummy basement apartments, doing drugs, with no job.” By that logic, how do they pay the rent?
    26. You claim to have a Ph.D. and be a tenured professor. Where is that college and what do you teach, and what have you written for your dissertation?
    27. What do your colleagues and students think about your statement denouncing your “college town?”
    28. Does watching black women perform on music videos make someone an expert on black culture, or on the culture created by black musicians and white music promoters?
    29. Why, if you think that American blacks are not “your people,” are you so fascinated with black music videos?
    30. How does the behavior of black performers in music videos compare with the behavior of white performers in professional wrestling?
    31. Have you done any peer-reviewed or accredited term papers on the connection between music videos and the behavior of ordinary black and white people? If so, please provide the link.
    32. You are apparently well-informed on the sexual practices and movements of black women. What research have you undertaken in this field, and where can your reports be found?
    33. Did that research include sexual encounters with black women? If so, please list all of them, the types of encounters, positions used, the personal information about the involved persons, and whether or not these encounters were provided willingly or for hire.
    34. Did you practice “safe sex” during this research?
    35. How do you square these acts of miscegenation with Nazi racial laws that forbid such behavior?
    36. Have any of these encounters resulted in children? If so, are you supporting them?
    37. Does watching documentaries about remote African tribes make one an expert on African-American life?
    38. Are loud and pushy women in supermarkets a threat to America’s survival?
    39. Are loud and pushy black women in supermarkets a threat to America’s future?
    40. Are you being forced to marry or reproduce with loud and pushy black women?
    41. Why are you so obsessed with loud and pushy black women in supermarkets?
    42. Are these loud and pushy black women preventing you from shopping?
    43. Have you written a peer-reviewed academic paper on loud and pushy black women in supermarkets? If so, please provide the link.
    44. Does watching music videos featuring loud black women and seeing loud and pushy black women make you an expert on famine in the Ukraine in the 1930s?
    45. In what field did you earn your Ph.D. and where can we find your dissertation?
    46. You claim that you answer all arguments with data. Please provide links to this data, and show that it has met academic standards. (As a Ph.D. with tenure at a university, you must know what those are)
    47. Tell us how the Russian people greeted their Nazi invaders with flowers, with proofs and citations.
    48. Tell us how Stalin intended to mate captured German civilians with monkeys to create a super-race, with proofs and citations. Your statement: “In the closing days of WWII the Soviet army was an entire army of rapists. Stalin had a secret agreement with Churchill and Roosevelt to take 4 million German civilians as slaves to Siberia to work in the Gulags — German women, old people teenagers, children. German babies were even taken for medical experiments. Stalin has a nightmarish dream of breeding humans with gorillas to create a super race of human/ape hybrids, which of course, failed. Read yourself in the Yalta agreement. It says the Soviets can take civilians as ‘labor in kind’ — meaning SLAVES!” Can you prove this with documentary evidence, such as examples of this “super race of human/ape hybrids?”
    49. Why would “human/ape hybrids” be a “super race?” Would they be superior to, say, the Aryan race?
    50. Please give your academic credentials in biology and anthropology in support of this statement.
    51. Tell us how Norman Rockwell sided with Hitler, with proofs and citations.
    52. Please give your academic credentials in art in support of this statement.
    53. Show us your proof that the white man is superior to the black man, with academic citations.
    54. You have also told us that you do not associate with neo-Nazis like Hal Turner, and so forth. Yet you have also said, on May 3rd, 2012 at 11:20 pm: “What’s wrong with being a neo-Nazi?” You have also said, “America is an evil country. While our brave young men were fighting in the East to stop the Asiatic hoards [sic], America bombed our civilians. There were no German soldiers left in the cities near the end of WWII. There were only babies, old people, young children, women. Yet the Americans bombed these civilians. During all this time our brave young men were fighting against Communism. America is an evil country. America fought on the side of evil during WWII. And evil won that war.” How can you rectify this hypocrisy?
    55. In an earlier post, you said you would prove your theories to us, only if we pay you vast sums of money. Does that mean you are only involved in neo-Nazism for personal gain? Statement: “FYI: I do not read any of your responses. I never click on your links. I am not going to do any work for you or answer your questions for free. I don’t do that.”
    56. Isn’t demanding money for personal financial gain in exchange for proving your cause a tactic of the Jews and blacks that you despise?
    57. Why are you using tactics of the very people you detest?
    58. Doesn’t behaving like a Jew or a black make you a Jew or a black?
    59. When are you going to provide us with that e-mail address for our 10-year resumes?
    60. You have said, “Someday you’ll be on a talk show, flogging one of your novels, and you’ll complain, ‘I once debated this guy named Ezra on the Internet and he ignored all my posts, even though they were so clever’. Then you will burst out into tears on live TV.” Care to explain this in 1,000 words or less?

    61. Isn’t a statement like the above an example of using the evil leftist debate terms of “epithets, slurs, invective,” and therefore not becoming a white nationalist and neo-Nazi?
    62. You have repeatedly said that you can create a website with your own worldview. Why have you not done so?
    63. If we are all crazy people, why are you wasting valuable time here instead of making your own web page?

You will be tested on this material. Please fill in all the information. If you fail to do so, the questions will be repeated until you have completed the assigned test. If you do not complete the assignment, you must withdraw from the class. See the bursar’s office.

This being the case, you have all been unwitting participants in a mental study at your expense. Thanks for playing along.”

Of course, none of that comment was genuine, either, as everyone here recognized at the time. I especially found the non-“Caucasian” claim amusing, as no one but a self-identified “Caucasian” would use that term. Around here, Zang Hong and the unspeakable funinsnow are the only commenters I can recall making that claim before, and they were both just as fake as you. Coincidence?

John I apologize for going off on you like have a right to your opinion, misguided as it may be.

  • Sol

I was just commenting on the often ignored fact that despite claims that Islamophobia is a extreme threat, antisemitism still makes up 5 times more religiously motivated hate crimes than anti Muslim bigotry.

Both are wrong, but I find it odd that nobody pays attention to the the numbers, only what is rising and what is falling.

Yet I see no headlines that say antisemitism once again tops religious bigotry in united states, because it is somehow accepted at this point. It’s like the whole idea is we have to focus on hate crimes against Muslims and gay people because they are on the rise, which is true, but at the same time if 5 times more people are being targeted for their religion, and at most that group is about 2.5 times larger than the Muslim population in america, something is amiss with the common narrative.
