You claim Muslims are targets of crimes. You call these crimes, “hate crimes”. Ok. Now I ask you, compared to what? Is there an equal or greater number of Muslims committing hate crimes against non-Muslims in America? Then, I want you to compare the results to other Western nations with Muslim populations. Then, I want you to compare with non-Western nations with small Muslim minority populations (Like China). Then, I want you to compare with nations that have a Muslim majority (Pakistan, Egypt, Turkey). I want you to compare with hate crimes against non-Muslims living in those nations. You provide absolutely no data.

Mark Potok: You cannot make a simple blanket statement like “Muslims are victims of hate crimes”. If you’re going to say that, you have to answer the question: “Compared to what?”
You must compare and contrast each combinatoric. I suspect, you will find … nothing.

Secondly, you have to answer the question: At what cost? It will be next to impossible to build a society that eliminates all hate crimes, all bias, all racism. It would require a massive police state. You would have to keep a file on every citizen. You would need massive government control over the daily lives of every citizen. I don’t want to live like that. I don’t want the government monitoring me. And it would never work anyway. The federal government is inept at doing even simple things. Government is not capable of doing what you, Mark Potok, wants it to do.

I do take certain drugs, such as Mucinex, Advil PM, vitamins, and iron. Right now, I live within twenty miles of several colleges and universities; my house is my own, and has no basement. It’s true, also, that I’m almost seventy and never had a girlfriend.

This is what you call a contradiction? You really are dense. I like the fact that you probably thought you were being clever when in reality you just made a laughing stock of yourself. Let me explain this in the SIMPLEST way possible without the use of sockpuppets.

1. Interracial crime means that the perpetrator(that’s the person who commits the crime) and the victim(the unlucky individual it happens to) are of different “races” according to the state’s classification along those lines. Interracial crime has nothing to do with motive. If a black guy and a white guy get in a bar fight over some woman, it’s not a hate crime.

2. A hate crime is when someone’s crime is primarily motivated by the victim’s perceived or real “race”, ethnicity, national origin, sexual orientation, etc. This means, incidentally, that hate crimes can exist within the same “race.” A white guy beating another white guy for “looking gay” would be a hate crime.

So let’s break this down:

1. White guy gets in shouting match with black guy over some girl at a bar. Black guy smacks white guy in the head with a bottle. This crime was not motivated by hate. It was a stupid, but common dispute which often leads to violence.

2. White guy gets butthurt at seeing white women with black dudes(except at home, when he’s watching porn), so he decides to shoot an interracial couple. His motivation was race, in this case. That’s a hate crime.

3. White guy burns down Bosnian white guy’s store because the latter is Muslim. This is a hate crime. Note that it is NOT an interracial crime.

If you had actually read what I wrote, you would have seen why I never contradicted myself.

If a beef breaks out over, say, the last package of mac and cheese in the grocery freezer, and someone gets killed, the race of the perp and the victim is normally immaterial to the charge. If, however, the perp yells at the vic, “You dirty Ay-rab, I’ll KILL before I let a towelhead have the last mac and cheese!”, then we have a possible hate crime, even if the vic wasn’t an Ayrab at all, but merely a (say) Sicilian-American who “looked like one.” The later is a case of ascribed ethnicity.

Here is the truth of the matter. Just speaking factually, the “normal healthy man” you described fits me almost perfectly. I can’t speak to it myself, but others, including my wife, say I look good, I’m clean cut, have a “real job”, a family, etc. So here I am, someone who challenges your worldview completely.

It’s unclear whether you’re being deliberately obtuse or if it just comes naturally. Ruslan said quite clearly that it’s a hate crime if the motivation is the victim’s perceived race, but you deleted that word when you copied his comment.

Obviously (to anyone with an iota of intelligence), the point is that interracial crime is not hate crime if the motivation is not racial animus but rather, for example, simple thievishness. On that basis, whether I’m black or white, I’d be smarter to target a white victim just because they’re more likely to have stuff worth stealing.

“Interracial crime” is crime involving people from different races. Many motivations of a criminal in such a crime are possible. For example, a white person might steal money from a black person, or vice-versa, because he or she wants money. In such a case, the motivation for the crime is not hate directed toward a person because of membership in a certain ethnic or racial group. This is an example of an interracial crime that is not a hate crime.

When a crime occurs between members of different races (i.e. interracial crime) that is motivated by bias against a certain race, it is then a (possible) hate crime.

Okay — so what is your point? So many of us are progressives…This is a bad thing to you? Why? Most of the progressives I know are professionals or at least well read. Although we support social safety nets (we definitely need them given the turmoil frequently stirring the job market, throwing people out of work, etc.), most of us work hard and many of us earn fairly good livings (that being well-educated thing, you know). We decry vulture capitalism and the looting of banks and 401Ks by the unscrupulous, whose actions have plunged millions into poverty. This is bad? How is it bad? Do you really think America is a stronger, more noble country when millions of people work full time and still have trouble finding places to live or food to eat?

How is the progressive belief that people should be able to obtain healthcare at a reasonable cost “bad” or “wrong?” Do you know anyone who has died because they couldn’t afford healthcare — because I do. Does this make America stronger, or a better place, or just pathetic? Do you KNOW that our system of health care, with private insurance, came about basically by accident, rather than ideology, as a result of the tax code after World War II?

So — liberals mostly work hard, tend to be better-educated (at least compared to many conservatives), are against financial crime and exploitation of people who work hard to get nowhere, want to help people gain access to what they need to live above the poverty line (typically through a decent job — but companies need to PAY living wages), don’t think people should die because they are locked out of the private insurance market. MY GOD! We’re all monsters!

Or do you object to the view, held by many progressives, that people shouldn’t be vilified because of the color of their skin or their country of origin, or their religion? Is that what you don’t like about us?

I was just commenting on the often ignored fact that despite claims that Islamophobia is a extreme threat, antisemitism still makes up 5 times more religiously motivated hate crimes than anti Muslim bigotry.

Both are wrong, but I find it odd that nobody pays attention to the the numbers, only what is rising and what is falling.

Yet I see no headlines that say antisemitism once again tops religious bigotry in united states, because it is somehow accepted at this point. It’s like the whole idea is we have to focus on hate crimes against Muslims and gay people because they are on the rise, which is true, but at the same time if 5 times more people are being targeted for their religion, and at most that group is about 2.5 times larger than the Muslim population in america, something is amiss with the common narrative.

Of course I am Jewish. I am frustrated that while hate crimes against Jews make up 2/3 of all religious hate crimes, the headlines are all about Islamophobia.

I’m not saying Islamophobia isn’t a problem. Right now, you can get away with being a horrible bigot against Muslims and still get elected to congress. But that is because there is a constant anti Muslim media campaign.

My point is that even without that kind of campaign, even with antisemitism no longer accepted in public discourse, it STILL is the most common motivation for religious hate crimes.

It’s like that is the static state of things, that even with nobody pushing people to hate Jews, there are so many people that will never stop being bigots against us, and it makes me sad.

Eugene is wrong when he wrote that it is impossible to rid the USA of all hate crimes. There is a way and is a better system of School education from the youngest getgo. By teaching children when they are young right through Highschool and even beyond, the respect due to all human beings, to hold dear to differences of each other. You don’t need a Police State, just simple universal education.

Sol, if you had been that clear in the beginning, your argument would have been differently received, or at least we would have known you were making one.

Potok makes a big mistake in this article. There are over 300 million people in America. 160 hate crimes is a tiny number in comparison. It’s at the level of statistical noise. So of course, if you take a ratio of the two numbers, a tiny change in denominator will cause a huge change in the percentage. Potok can say “Hate crimes … jumped up 50% in 2010″. But a 50% increase of a small number is still a small number, and if statistical noise (small numbers in comparison to the total population) is jumping around it doesn’t mean anything. There’s no trend. Engineers and scientists see this all the time. You have to ask yourself, what is the size of your error bar (standard deviation).

In that event, Eugene, it is of no significance when black women react aggressively to you for staring at their buttocks in a grocery line.

I do not believe you are a professor of anything. As for your hero, Dr. Coon, he was at one time mentored by Dr. Hooton, with whose work I am familiar, and enjoyed a high reputation. Dr. Hooton moved away from the type of racism that was at one time fashionable. Dr. Coon went so far the other way that he fabricated evidence for use by segregationist groups, whom he instructed never to attribute these “findings” to him. That you knew nothing of more recent findings is pretty strong evidence that this is the extent of your credentials.

Eugene’s argument is flawed by logic because he fails to take into account relevant data, i.e., the root cause of hate crimes and the effects of groups, such as the SPLC, who document and track hate crimes and individuals who practice hate speech.

Why are we not surprised that Eugene, Ph.D. failed Stats 101? The magnitude of a statistical effect is based in reference to the sample space, which in this case wouldn’t be the number of people in the U.S., but the number of Muslims in the U.S. Based on the numbers reported (just comparing percentages), there are no complicated statistical approaches even used for this data, but you still didn’t get it right.

Deliberately (or not) leaving out consideration of unreported crimes, past trends, and the seriousness of this kind of crime (which to you probably wouldn’t be serious at all–given previous rants, maybe you think hate crime is a good thing) is just more failure of basic adult reasoning on your part.

Either you’re a pimply adolescent (or a group of adolescents) giggling at yourself over these clever troll-posts, or you’re genuinely a racist (or group of racists) with all the predictable cognitive and lifestyle dysfunctions. Which are you, Eugene?

Carlton S. Coon has a map in his book, “The Origin of Races”, that begins in the 16th century and presents the geographic distributions of ethnic groups. His argument is this because there has been so much migration since the beginning of the age of enlightenment, we have to have a proper chronological starting point for the study of Man. Coon was a brilliant man, receiving his Ph.D. from Harvard, he went on to become a faculty member, and eventually chairman of the department of anthropology. Furthermore, he is a modern contemporary. His career extended until the late 1960′s. I would put him in the same category as William Shockley, who won the Nobel prize in physics, and spoke openly on the race issue.

Tobias, the SPLC’s Teaching Tolerance programs seem ideal, with no discernable political bias. They should be adopted universally in our school systems.

So why is it that when you employ precisely the same declension of “reasoning”, you are not an idiot? Oh! But you are!
