A note to our commenters:

As a lot of you know, we've developed a problem with the antagonistic nature of the comment threads on Hatewatch. As a result, and after talking to some of you, we've decided to try and restore some civility and sense of community.

From now on, we're just not going to publish comments that include name-calling of any kind, no matter whose side of a particular issue you're on. We're not going to publish guttural expressions of racism, anti-Semitism, gay-bashing, misogyny and so on. We will publish white nationalist arguments, but only if they're presented civilly and calmly, like the fellow from Stormfront who recently made an effort to politely argue with other commenters here. We will not publish bogus claims about certain groups' alleged inferiority, and we won't publish links to racist sites or sites that contain misleading or false statistics. Finally, we plan to stop publishing comments from a few posters who have become a real problem on our threads.

This is not an attempt to censor people's thinking, but it is an effort to make Hatewatch more of a community of people discussing important issues. We don't want it to degenerate yet another Internet shouting match.

Thanks for your understanding. We appreciate your contributions to the blog very much.

And Steve, no one is saying the Klan has no right to organize. They certainly do. And we certainly have a right to counter-organize.

And anyone who open-carries outside of hunting season is just a bully and a twit. Who do you think you are, intimidating everyone like that?

Let me see. I owe a whole list of answers to Kiwi and Reynardine, and I owe an apology to Potok. uh, ok. This is the plan: We first transform America and build a paradise. then once we have paradise I will answer all questions and issue an apology. I promise. But you have to wait because there’s going to be a transition period where we first have to get all the factories organized to build that utopia. Now of course, during that period some of you may be sent to Gulags in eastern Siberia to work at Kolyma in the gold mines. But in the end, we’ll have a paradise. I promise! So you’re just gonna have to be patient and wait."

So, "Lon Chaney:"

You have basically said that rather than conduct yourself with accountability, honesty, ethics, and ordinary courtesy, you will simply build a straw man and demand that your opponents defend it.

Interesting society you neo-Nazis want to build...one where honesty, ethics, courtesy, and decent behavior do not exist. Some kind of leadership you are providing.

Sorry, that answer is an "epic fail." You still owe us answers and Mr. Potok a deep, heartfelt apology.

Aron, i'm pretty sure that you mean those anti-Union "right to work" states have lower wages - and as a visitor to many former Southern mill towns - the starkest example i am aware of is probably Martinsville/Henry County, Virginia - will note having low wages and no Union was no defense to watching your jobs get shipped overseas when the rich corporate interests started wanting more and more.

You can still buy Fieldcrest Cannon towels at Target (who took over Marshall Fields) but they haven't been made in Marshall Fields' company town, Fieldsdale, Virginia for decades.

BTW, Gregory, airbags are required in many European countries and are normally installed voluntarily by car manufacturers, probably to keep from designing two interiors. I personally believe seatbelts would have been put in cars without US government intervention by the end of the '60's, as a fantasy racing thing if nothing else (like a console mounted tachometer on a Buick with an automatic transmission). I personally think that airbag development was completely instituted or at least speeded up by US government mandates.

Of course there are highways in Europe, you twit. But people don't take their little Fiat Puntos on them the way I've seen the world-class idiots who take their Smart Cars on the Interstate.

I drive a Mazdaspeed 3. It's a pretty damned small car that trades fuel economy for high performance.

And here's the thing about jobs, stupid: they are out there, but the wages are so low as to not even be worth doing.

(Oh, and for the record, I would love for Fiat, Peugeot, and especially Citröen to come back to the states. I think the latter makes some incredible cars.)

And another thing, it is a proven fact that all of those anti-Union right-to-work states have higher wages. Don't hate the unions. Hate the employers. (Not that you'd listen to me, but I'm saying this more for my friends who actually have functioning brains.)

Gregory, I did not mention any nefarious plots. Any time Government meddles with the Free Enerprise system there are unexpected side effects. Ruslan, you are very knowledgable about a lot of things, but you said you live in Europe. Come stroll Detroit, or Newark, or... Pick a city. There are jobs iin every city in America if a person wants to work. Why do you suppose we have all the Mexicans here?. I'm pretty sure a whole bunch of Black people build those cars, German cars, in the Nonunion South, and they are very well built. Aron, there are highways in Europe. Does the term Autobahn ring any bells? You can also get small SUV's like the Ford Escape we export there from Louisville. A Tahoe would look silly there, and it is a silly fantasy here, like an Assault Rifle, and just as dangerous in the wrong hands. Rey, the Diesel fuel used in Europe burns cleaner than even our newly improved Diesel. I don't know if we do not have the refining capacity, or if the cost of such fuel would be prohibitive for our big trucks. (hey, at least I tell you if I don't know something). I do know that the US smog controls on new VW Diesels are very complicated, and like conventional Hybrids, not worth the expense in my book. Just get a Fiat. Also, the rednecks that diddle with their Cummins Dodge pickups usually get a lot of black smoke and not much more power.

Unfortunately, Edward – or should I say "Edouard"? – has confused things a bit here. His "Génération Identitaire" is in fact a contemporary French neo-Fascist movement with the usual anti-immigrant, anti-Muslim agenda. When he talks about the 1968 generation, he's referring to Paris 1968, Daniel Cohn-Bendit and so on. That has nothing to do with Sam's revisionist U.S. history, of course.

Which makes it a bit disingenuous (and presumptuous) of Edouard to start talking about building a paradise in America, when his whole cultural frame of reference is actually European. We have enough right-wing fools of our own already, we don't need to import more.

aadila,
Thanks. I'm familiar with the term, I just wanted Sam to verbalize his definition. He didn't disappoint, as his recitation was what I was expecting. You are absolutely correct about Sam's thoughtless regurgitation of right wing mythology.

Sam's new narrative is that the gubbmint denied access to small fuel efficient vehicles, presumably forcing the public to buy SUVs and monster trucks. [face palm] Of course, it is people like Sam who howl like banshees when anyone suggests raising the CAFE standards. Next he will be telling us that seat belts and airbags would have become standard equipment without the evil gubbmint intervening.

Since Edward has decided to throw out the concept of coherency altogether and engage in what seems to be a bizarre strawman displaying even more historical ignorance, I'll deal with Sam's claim instead:
"
Welfare Culture is, as I have said, found in areas of most major cities that have blocks upon blocks of Black people that do not work, and don’t even know anybody who works, except their Social Worker."

Oh really? So give us some concrete examples of these areas. Also do you know what the term "unemployment" means? Here's a hint, it doesn't mean people not working because they don't want to. Also, how do you account for the fact that this kind of poverty was far worse prior to the Great Society reforms of 1964, and generally improved until the 1980s and started declining after 1996's welfare reform?

This is the plan: We first transform America and build a paradise. then once we have paradise I will answer all questions and issue an apology. I promise. But you have to wait because there's going to be a transition period where we first have to get all the factories organized to build that utopia.
Welfare Culture is, as I have said, found in areas of most major cities that have blocks upon blocks of Black people that do not work, and don't even know anybody who works, except their Social Worker. In rural Kentucky, there are groups of White people that share that description. They are no better, but tend to use Meth and Oxycontin instead of Crack. These people tend to group together, be related and know each other. Hence a culture of dependency. Indian reservations tend to also follow this pattern of dependency. Alcohol is usually their drug of choice.
As for cars, our government regulations still keep out a plethora of economical cars that the rest of the world has access to. Ford Figo, Fiat Uno, Renault Twingo, Suzuki Alto, etc. The three lightest cars we are allowed are the Fiat 500, the Mazda 2, and the Ford Fiesta. They all weigh roughly 2,500 pounds. The original Beetle, Morris Minor and Renault Dauphine weighed around 1,600, and the original Mini substantially less. Assuming the development of the Lambda Sond Oxygen sensor from Sweden and computer advances from Japan and Europe would have made electronic fuel injection inevitable without US Government intervention, we could be using half the Gasoline we now use. Oh, I forgot. Most people on food stamps are too fat to drive them. See how Government Intervention snowballs?
As for Osha, did you know that even bricks are required to hava a MSDS sheet on file? God forbid you drop a pallet of bricks and there is clay dust in the air. Not like outside where there is dirt dust.

Gregory,

"Welfare culture" is a term Sam picked up either from his parents or talk radio and he never bothered to actually question what that means.

It is a throwback to the conservative political agenda of decades ago which questioned the existence of social welfare programs because they supposedly "rewarded" indigents not to work.

Bill Clinton signed sweeping "welfare" reforms into law in 1997, and today there is almost nothing left of the former concept of welfare. The term "welfare" today consists of food stamps and temporary assistance for needy families.

Those reforms under Clinton addressed the right wing opposition to the former AFDC welfare by limiting such assistance to two years. States are now also empowered to eliminate payments to recipients altogether. The law also has provisions to allow states to use the funds to encourage marriage and discourage out of wedlock childbirths, which would be obvious to Sam if he ever bothered to learn about it.

Immediately following the reforms under Clinton, there was a swift decline in the number of "welfare" recipients in America (eventually cut in half) while there was a modest rise in the number of single mothers in the workforce compared with prior to the reforms. Those who were cut off from welfare involuntarily did not show encouraging job growth, but merely remained indigent and likely contibute to crime and social disorder.

This is yet another example of Sam regurgitating someone else's ideas without going through the effort to verify if they are valid or not.

So Reynardine is a 68?er. That generation is dying off. Do the math. Someone who was 18 during the summer of love in 1967 would be 63 now. The most spoiled generation in history. They’ll be dead soon. It will be up to us to fix the problems they created. Once they’re finally dead, we’ll be able to fix the past."

Lon Chaney, I'm happy to tell you: your "Generation Identitaire" all voted for Obama. "Generation Identitaire" pretty much consists of you and your many identities.

And maybe the 60 -- count 'em, 60 -- guys who showed up at the Klan rally.

And I'm really impressed...you know George Orwell! You're going to rewrite history! Yes, just like in "1984!" Remember: "Who controls the present, controls the past. Who controls the past, controls the future."

Except that was in a parody of a Communist tyranny, not a Volkisch state like you want. So I guess you'll have to become a Communist to achieve nirvana. Ask Ruslan Amirkhanov how to do it.

While you're doing that...you have a bunch of questions to answer. See above.

All told, although social conservatives and other people who are scared to death of sex, people who look different, or people who don't automatically follow what their elders tell them didn't like the 1960s, it was an era that led to significant advances for "the little people" -- you know, "women?"

At some point, you may wish to view the History Channel's series on Hippies and what their legacy actually was. Especially since you apparently own a computer/tablet/smart phone.

My greatest regret regarding the 1960s is that some people who were idealistic, artistic, and tolerant have been beaten down over the years and taken on that "we must obey" mentality. Fortunately, no matter how beaten up the American population has been by the economic messes of the bankster class, I really doubt that you will be able to push the U.S. back into the 1950s.

Finally, I know that it will horrify you to know this, but the boomers -- who include those dastardly Hippie types -- are likely to be a significant political and cultural presence for several decades yet to come. And as Reynardine said, we have managed to spread our message of tolerance and anti-facism to enough of the "younger" generations so that, awful though the new facist, tea party lick-spittles of the uber-rich are, I don't think you will "reclaim" anything.

So put that in your pipe and smoke it!

Sam -- how do I say this gently: please don't hold forth on economic issues about which you are profoundly ignorant. Also, lay off pronoucements on environmental regulations -- you know NOTHING about them. For example, the inital Clean Air Act was aimed at "point" sources -- meaning factories. Even now, the rules in the Clean Air Act Amendments of 1990, the regulations regarding automobiles are pretty lax -- fuel economy standards on NEW cars, fuel economcy standards for fleets run by businesses, and the requirement that metropolitan statistical areas come up with plans to deal with air quality non-attainment, since vehicles (mobile sources in regulatory speak) are major contributors to ozone formation. Currently, the Agency is focusing on diesel emissions because they produce both gases and particulate matter and are considered the number one pollutant of concern in many urban areas.

One regulation that came out of the 1970s was the phasing in of unleaded gasoline. This, in fact, has been a major success for EPA, and lead deposition from car exhaust is one of the few pollutants that has shown a significant decline.

Do you want to go back to leaded gasoline, considering that lead is toxic and there is NO threshhold of exposure that is considered safe. You may or may not have seen the study that was released earlier this year regarding the elevated lead levels in prison inmates. Considering that lead is a neurotoxin, this isn't surprising, but it is amazingly tragic.

Perhaps you should have mentioned the Occupational Safety and Health Act or its Administration. Say what you want about OSHA, but considering the large numbers of people who are still injured and die every year, I'd say we still need OSHA.

By the way -- Re:OSHA -- they keep statistics on on-the-job shootings and the large number of convenience store, mini-mart, and taxi drivers who are killed every year, mostly at low-paying or minimum wage jobs. But then, what are a few dead convenience store clerks compared to the ability to tote a gun around anywhere you like to impress your buddies!
