As a lot of you know, we’ve developed a problem with the antagonistic nature of the comment threads on Hatewatch. As a result, and after talking to some of you, we’ve decided to try and restore some civility and sense of community.

From now on, we’re just not going to publish comments that include name-calling of any kind, no matter whose side of a particular issue you’re on. We’re not going to publish guttural expressions of racism, anti-Semitism, gay-bashing, misogyny and so on. We will publish white nationalist arguments, but only if they’re presented civilly and calmly, like the fellow from Stormfront who recently made an effort to politely argue with other commenters here. We will not publish bogus claims about certain groups’ alleged inferiority, and we won’t publish links to racist sites or sites that contain misleading or false statistics. Finally, we plan to stop publishing comments from a few posters who have become a real problem on our threads.

This is not an attempt to censor people’s thinking, but it is an effort to make Hatewatch more of a community of people discussing important issues. We don’t want it to degenerate yet another Internet shouting match.

Thanks for your understanding. We appreciate your contributions to the blog very much.

This is the plan: We first transform America and build a paradise. then once we have paradise I will answer all questions and issue an apology. I promise. You can still buy Fieldcrest Cannon towels at Target (who took over Marshall Fields) but they haven’t been made in Marshall Fields’ company town, Fieldsdale, Virginia for decades.

As I suspected, you don’t know what unemployment is. It means there are more people than jobs. And when unemployment is high, it drives wages down, so even people who are employed don’t get a living wage.

I drive a Mazdaspeed 3. It’s a pretty damned small car that trades fuel economy for high performance.

And here’s the thing about jobs, stupid: they are out there, but the wages are so low as to not even be worth doing.

(Oh, and for the record, I would love for Fiat, Peugeot, and especially Citröen to come back to the states. I think the latter makes some incredible cars.)

And another thing, it is a proven fact that all of those anti-Union right-to-work states have higher wages. Don’t hate the unions. Hate the employers. (Not that you’d listen to me, but I’m saying this more for my friends who actually have functioning brains.)

Which makes it a bit disingenuous (and presumptuous) of Edouard to start talking about building a paradise in America, when his whole cultural frame of reference is actually European. We have enough right-wing fools of our own already, we don’t need to import more.

Sam’s new narrative is that the gubbmint denied access to small fuel efficient vehicles, presumably forcing the public to buy SUVs and monster trucks. [face palm] Of course, it is people like Sam who howl like banshees when anyone suggests raising the CAFE standards. Next he will be telling us that seat belts and airbags would have become standard equipment without the evil gubbmint intervening.

Oh really? So give us some concrete examples of these areas. Also do you know what the term “unemployment” means? Here’s a hint, it doesn’t mean people not working because they don’t want to. Also, how do you account for the fact that this kind of poverty was far worse prior to the Great Society reforms of 1964, and generally improved until the 1980s and started declining after 1996′s welfare reform?

“Welfare culture” is a term Sam picked up either from his parents or talk radio and he never bothered to actually question what that means.

It is a throwback to the conservative political agenda of decades ago which questioned the existence of social welfare programs because they supposedly “rewarded” indigents not to work.

Bill Clinton signed sweeping “welfare” reforms into law in 1997, and today there is almost nothing left of the former concept of welfare. The term “welfare” today consists of food stamps and temporary assistance for needy families.

Those reforms under Clinton addressed the right wing opposition to the former AFDC welfare by limiting such assistance to two years. States are now also empowered to eliminate payments to recipients altogether. The law also has provisions to allow states to use the funds to encourage marriage and discourage out of wedlock childbirths, which would be obvious to Sam if he ever bothered to learn about it.

Immediately following the reforms under Clinton, there was a swift decline in the number of “welfare” recipients in America (eventually cut in half) while there was a modest rise in the number of single mothers in the workforce compared with prior to the reforms. Those who were cut off from welfare involuntarily did not show encouraging job growth, but merely remained indigent and likely contibute to crime and social disorder.

This is yet another example of Sam regurgitating someone else’s ideas without going through the effort to verify if they are valid or not.

All told, although social conservatives and other people who are scared to death of sex, people who look different, or people who don’t automatically follow what their elders tell them didn’t like the 1960s, it was an era that led to significant advances for “the little people” — you know, “women?”

At some point, you may wish to view the History Channel’s series on Hippies and what their legacy actually was. Especially since you apparently own a computer/tablet/smart phone.

My greatest regret regarding the 1960s is that some people who were idealistic, artistic, and tolerant have been beaten down over the years and taken on that “we must obey” mentality. Fortunately, no matter how beaten up the American population has been by the economic messes of the bankster class, I really doubt that you will be able to push the U.S. back into the 1950s.

Finally, I know that it will horrify you to know this, but the boomers — who include those dastardly Hippie types — are likely to be a significant political and cultural presence for several decades yet to come. And as Reynardine said, we have managed to spread our message of tolerance and anti-facism to enough of the “younger” generations so that, awful though the new facist, tea party lick-spittles of the uber-rich are, I don’t think you will “reclaim” anything.

One regulation that came out of the 1970s was the phasing in of unleaded gasoline. This, in fact, has been a major success for EPA, and lead deposition from car exhaust is one of the few pollutants that has shown a significant decline.

Do you want to go back to leaded gasoline, considering that lead is toxic and there is NO threshhold of exposure that is considered safe. You may or may not have seen the study that was released earlier this year regarding the elevated lead levels in prison inmates. Considering that lead is a neurotoxin, this isn’t surprising, but it is amazingly tragic.

Perhaps you should have mentioned the Occupational Safety and Health Act or its Administration. Say what you want about OSHA, but considering the large numbers of people who are still injured and die every year, I’d say we still need OSHA.

By the way — Re:OSHA — they keep statistics on on-the-job shootings and the large number of convenience store, mini-mart, and taxi drivers who are killed every year, mostly at low-paying or minimum wage jobs. But then, what are a few dead convenience store clerks compared to the ability to tote a gun around anywhere you like to impress your buddies!
