Sam,

It's hard to say, and your view on it is as valid as anyone's. Maybe you know best. For what it's worth I don't particularly think he's conscious of his racism. I don't think he was trying to support racist ideology. I think it's more subtle than that.

But I think it is crucual to consider that very few people actually self-identify as being racist. For this reason it is more useful to look at institutions rather than individuals. Racism arises from the consciousness in subtle ways -- even in "innocent" acceptance of the status quo -- but the institutions are where it can be seen, identified, and objectively examined. That is where it can be addressed and dealt with. No one changes their mind unless they want to but we can change our institutions.

This whole "up by your bootstraps" idea that got its start from Booker T. Washington has been distorted. Yes, people have the responsibility to lift themselves up by their bootstraps; but if this is true, those in advantageous circumstances have the responsibility to not push down others with their boot heels.

I just don't think people are fully aware of how they contribute to racism by doing nothing. Uttering yuk-yuk Confederate humor is just one example of insensitivity to the real problem of racial inequality and injustice. When we do nothing to fix it, the problem persists.

Yep, I agree with you, concernedcitizen. I've been aware of these groups for many years (thanks to SPLC). My ? has always been, if this country can go after any Muslim that officials are suspicious of, for any reason, why can't they keep a closer watch on the white supremacist/militia types? I'm afraid the answer has a lot to do with both skin color and religion...witness the hell raised over Homeland Security's report on militias just a few years ago...

Sam, many people in the South use the term "war of Northern aggression", and not only tongue in cheek. Just like in South Carolina...traditional families will never say anybody is "lying". They'll say she's "telling stories." Of course it means the same thing.

As to gathering chuckles, that may have been his intent. But the folksy, lumpen style that might be appropriate with one's white, culturally homogeneous, conservative friends at the hunting lodge after killing some living beings to mount their skulls on the wall, may not go over so well in front of a national audience with lesser appreciation for Confederate values, i.e. New Yorkers.

Since you brought up buddhism the other day in a separate context, I'll paraphrase one of the principles: Don't accept something spoken because of the personality of the speaker, try to discern the meaning of the words. He's spouting Confederate rhetoric and making light of slavery.

Rey, as I have said I am not happy with this choice for their leadership. It is as though he is the answer to Conan O'Brian's question at the Press Corps dinner. However, the quote you linked is part of a longer story. Addressing a group of New Yorkers, he was relating how the NRA was founded, in New York, by Union soldiers that were disappointed in the US troops' firearm skills compared to those of Confederate soldiers. This offhand remark about the "War of Northern Aggression" was no doubt intended to give a chuckle to the New York audience and I believe was not meant as a serious current opinion. The writers of the Beverly Hillbillies had Granny Clampett use this term in several episodes for comedic effect as well.

Linnea, these groups are out there and they have a pretty good following too.

I really don't understand why we have to wait until the crime is committed when all we have to do is tap into their moonshine way of communication and find out just what they are planning.

Remember how the moonshiners did and still do use signals to warn others in the area that the law is in town?

These underground people use similar type communications in their communities as well.

I believe that we have a much larger home grown threat from these types than we do foreign terrorists.

I don't care where their supremacy beliefs come from stupidity obviously knows no boundaries including crossing national boundaries.

There are plenty of publications regarding these groups, plenty of articles including the reporting that goes on here.

Not much of a chance, imo, Eric. For some reason, it seems that these militia and sovereign citizens groups, along with other homegrown extremist groups, have a gag order on the media. The media is no longer the gatekeeper of our democracy that it is supposed to be because many of its players seem to be very afraid to report the truth about these extremist groups, and they shy away from informing Americans how dangerous these groups are to us and our government.

"At one point, officers responded to Rogers’ home after neighbors complained that he was flying an upside-down U.S. flag outdoors. That is a common public display for antigovernment activists who believed the United States is under attack by subversive foreign powers."

I believe that the U.S. is under attack too but it's usually by people such as Bucky and the rest of the underground militia clan, the ones that want to be Nazi's etc.

One day we might find them actually dressing like Hitler and saluting on street corners proselytizing.

Another quote from the article:
Buford Rogers and his father also had crudely hand-painted signs outside their home, with the red letters “BSM” sprayed on a black background, the chief said. “When I asked what that stood for, they told me ‘Black Snake Militia,’” the chief told Hatewatch. “I personally asked the father what that was all about and he told me, ‘Oh, that’s Bucky’s thing.’”

The chief said the investigation, now being led by the FBI’s Joint Terrorism Task Force, is ongoing, but preliminary indications are that the militia is a small cell. “I would describe it as Bucky Rogers and his family and close friends,” he said.

No way, there are a lot of these knuckleheads running around whether they have independent militias, they are probably well aware of the other groups in the area.

Absolute back woods craziness.
