It’s hard to say, and your view on it is as valid as anyone’s. Maybe you know best. For what it’s worth I don’t particularly think he’s conscious of his racism. I don’t think he was trying to support racist ideology. I think it’s more subtle than that.

But I think it is crucual to consider that very few people actually self-identify as being racist. For this reason it is more useful to look at institutions rather than individuals. Racism arises from the consciousness in subtle ways — even in “innocent” acceptance of the status quo — but the institutions are where it can be seen, identified, and objectively examined. That is where it can be addressed and dealt with. No one changes their mind unless they want to but we can change our institutions.

This whole “up by your bootstraps” idea that got its start from Booker T. Washington has been distorted. Yes, people have the responsibility to lift themselves up by their bootstraps; but if this is true, those in advantageous circumstances have the responsibility to not push down others with their boot heels.

I just don’t think people are fully aware of how they contribute to racism by doing nothing. Uttering yuk-yuk Confederate humor is just one example of insensitivity to the real problem of racial inequality and injustice. When we do nothing to fix it, the problem persists.

As to gathering chuckles, that may have been his intent. But the folksy, lumpen style that might be appropriate with one’s white, culturally homogeneous, conservative friends at the hunting lodge after killing some living beings to mount their skulls on the wall, may not go over so well in front of a national audience with lesser appreciation for Confederate values, i.e. New Yorkers.

Since you brought up buddhism the other day in a separate context, I’ll paraphrase one of the principles: Don’t accept something spoken because of the personality of the speaker, try to discern the meaning of the words. He’s spouting Confederate rhetoric and making light of slavery.

I really don’t understand why we have to wait until the crime is committed when all we have to do is tap into their moonshine way of communication and find out just what they are planning.

Remember how the moonshiners did and still do use signals to warn others in the area that the law is in town?

These underground people use similar type communications in their communities as well.

I believe that we have a much larger home grown threat from these types than we do foreign terrorists.

I don’t care where their supremacy beliefs come from stupidity obviously knows no boundaries including crossing national boundaries.

There are plenty of publications regarding these groups, plenty of articles including the reporting that goes on here.

Its not like they didn’t report on this at all. I do wish that the media would focus a lot more on groups like this though.

I believe that the U.S. is under attack too but it’s usually by people such as Bucky and the rest of the underground militia clan, the ones that want to be Nazi’s etc.

One day we might find them actually dressing like Hitler and saluting on street corners proselytizing.
