Internship Description:
The Southern Poverty Law Center is dedicated to fighting hate and bigotry and to seeking justice for the most vulnerable members of our society. Using litigation, education, and other forms of advocacy, the SPLC works toward the day where the ideals of equal justice and equal opportunity will be a reality. Effective communications that reaches a variety of our target audiences is key to each of these forms of advocacy.
The communications intern will assist in all stages of the communications process, including tracking media coverage, updating and maintaining contact lists, cataloguing SPLC media collaterals (including press releases, web commentary, publications and etc.), distributing SPLC reports and analyses, researching events and issues, drafting press materials upon occasion, and helping to maintain the SPLC's Internet presence. The internship will begin in August and end in December (specific dates TBD) at the rate of $10 per hour (15-20 hours per week).
Requirements: Candidates should have a general interest in communications, public affairs or public relations. They should have strong interest in news, politics and/or social justice. They must have great research skills, a working knowledge of basic computer programs (including Microsoft Word and Excel), effective written and verbal communication skills, excellent listening skills, the ability to take direction and work well independently, a general understanding of SPLC-related topics and overall support of SPLC’s mission.
