Sept. 3, 2004 -- As our society grows more diverse, it is important that children learn how to relate to those who may seem different. For nearly 14 years, the Center's Teaching Tolerance program has proven effective in helping educators achieve this goal.
With award-winning multimedia education kits and the highly acclaimed Teaching Tolerance magazine, teachers across the country are able to learn about how to better instruct their students on understanding and acceptance.
More than 600,000 educators recently received the newest issue of Teaching Tolerance. This "best of" issue highlights six of the magazine's all-time favorite stories about building community in schools.
The articles shed light on the most common divisions and offer teachers' suggestions for dealing with these issues. Topics include the bullying of overweight students, racial division, sexual harassment, and the mistreatment of students with disabilities. Exclusive interviews and commentary on Columbine High School, five years after tragic violence fractured its learning community, are also included in this issue.
Teachers across the nation praise this magazine for its positive impact in their classroom.
From a Kentucky teacher:
"Each time I receive your magazine, I look forward to sharing parts of it with my students ... One can only hope that it is read widely and appreciated deeply — as it deserves to be!"
From a Wisconsin schoolteacher:
"I am amazed at the quality and depth your publication offers teachers, students, and parents. Thank you for allowing this free publication to reach us via web and U.S. mail; it is truly a gift."
From a New Jersey schoolteacher:
"I simply cannot believe that you are able to offer your publication for free ... Please know that by supporting me as a teacher, you are touching the lives of the fourth graders in my care each school year."
From a Texas educator:
"There is very little in each of your magazines that I do not find a way to use in my personal classroom."
From a Missouri teacher:
"I absolutely love ... the Teaching Tolerance magazine! It would be impossible for me to recall all of the numerous times I have received valuable information and ideas!"
It is through the donations of caring Center supporters that Teaching Tolerance is able to offer all its educational tools free of charge, so every student has the opportunity to learn understanding and acceptance — no matter what their school's budget may be.
