Lawsuit Seeks Adequate Care for Diabetic Inmates

The Center has filed a case on behalf of diabetic inmates housed in Alabama prisons seeking adequate healthcare.

MONTGOMERY, Ala. -- A class action recently filed by Center attorneys in federal court here seeks adequate care for diabetic inmates housed in Alabama prisons.

The Alabama Department of Corrections displays a deliberate indifference to the serious medical needs of inmates with diabetes, and the six plaintiffs and the class they represent are suffering from blurred vision, amputation of toes, possible kidney damage, recurrent low blood sugar, dizziness and pain. Failure to provide adequate care violates the Eighth and 10th Amendments to the United States Constitution.

The complaint in Gaddis v. Campbell is pending before U. S. District Court Judge Myron Thompson.
