Incidents of apparent hate crimes and hate group activities listed here are drawn primarily from media sources.

These incidents include only a fraction of the approximately 260,000 reported and unreported hate crimes that a 2013 government study estimated occur annually.

    Jeremiah Jerome Mauer, 30, and Steven Ray Grangood, 32, members of the skinhead group United Aryan Empire (UAE), were arrested on weapons charges. Another member, Timothy McMurphy, 28, was arrested on a parole violation. These arrests come after a police investigation of a murder plot and various hate crimes. On Jan. 13, Greg Tinnell, 43, also a member of UAE, was arrested for his alleged involvement in two recent shootings on charges of unlawful use of a weapon and being an ex-felon in possession of a firearm. On Jan. 19, another UAE member Warren Gerald Browning, 35, was charged with first-degree attempted assault and unlawful possession of a sawed-off shotgun after police began investigating incidents in the area. On Jan. 23, Jeremiah Mauer, 30; Gregory Tinnell, 43; and Warren Gerald Browning, 35, were arrested and face one count of racketeering each and two counts of conspiracy to commit murder in connection with a shooting in a local home. They also face second-degree assault, riot and felon in possession of firearms charges. And on Jan. 30, another UAE member, Matthew Marc Reed, 24, was arrested on first-degree attempted assault and conspiracy to commit murder charges.

    Reginald Klaiber, 25, pleaded guilty to assault with a dangerous weapon with a hate crime enhancement for stabbing a 15-year-old transgender girl on a Metro train in July. He was sentenced on March 11 to more than four years in prison.

    Steven Mason, a 31-year-old white man, was charged with two counts each of assault with a deadly weapon, battery with serious bodily injury and mayhem after allegedly attacking a black man with gardening shears and a hammer on January 1.

    John Louis Blalack, 20, and Robert Henry Rice, 24, pleaded guilty to federal hate crime charges for their roles in a series of assaults on African Americans based on their race in Jackson in the spring of 2011. Deryl Dedmon, 22, was sentenced to 50 years, John Rice, 21, was sentenced to 18-1/2 years, and Dylan Butler, 23, received a seven-year sentence for their roles in the beating death of James Anderson. On February 25, William Kirk Montgomery, 25, present at the hit-and-run, intentional attack that killed Anderson was sentenced to 19 years, while two other men who were part of earlier attacks on African Americans, Joseph Paul Dominick, 22, and Jonathan Kyle Gaskamp, 23, were sentenced to four years each. On April 9, Shelbie Brooke Richards, 21, and Sarah Adelia Graves, 22, were sentenced to the maximum amount under their plea agreements for their role in the death of Anderson. Richards got 8 years and Graves got 5 years.

    Brodes Wayne Joynes, 54, was charged with attempted murder, assault with a deadly weapon, battery with serious bodily injury, two counts of criminal threats, false imprisonment, and hate-crime enhancements after he allegedly stabbed a transgender woman on a city bus and hurled epithets at her and her friend.
