Only white students were allowed to enter Central High School on Sept. 5, 1957, a day after the Arkansas National Guard prevented Black students from attending classes despite integration orders from a federal judge. Arkansas’ segregationist governor, Orval Faubus, ordered the guardsmen to surround the school to block Black students, including Minnijean Brown, from the grounds. Photo by William P.
