Liberty Counsel lies about far-right racists tweeting #MerryChristmas

The Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) maintains an automated tool that tracks trending topics of discussion among a far-right community of Twitter users.

Because that tool captured the community talking about Christmas, during Christmas, the anti-LGBT hate group Liberty Counsel has accused the SPLC of attacking Christians.

As is clearly described on the Hate Tracker website, when not tweeting about #WhiteGenocide or #BanIslam, the far-right accounts "also participate in many conversations and topics that are popular among more ‘mainstream’ communities," because these accounts use Twitter for "media subversion, ideological indoctrination and propaganda dissemination."

But for Liberty Counsel's Mat Staver, the fact that the Hate Tracker captured extremists tweeting about the holiday wasn't an insight into far-right social media behavior but rather anti-Christian propaganda. Staver joined the white nationalist website VDARE, “alt-right” incubator Breitbart News and pizzagate promoter Mike Cernovich in spreading this dishonest reading.

Liberty Counsel has a well-documented history of anti-LGBT extremism and has recently joined other anti-LGBT hate groups in a media campaign against the SPLC. Earlier this month, that same campaign was caught circulating an anti-Semitic publication that promoted a 9/11 truther.
