The Trump administration’s assertion that we have won the ‘war on poverty’ reveals just how out of touch these billionaire fat cats are.
Facts tell a starkly different story.
According to the government’s own data, more than 40 million people live in poverty in this country. And according to a recent survey by the Federal Reserve, two out of every five Americans cannot cover an emergency $400 expense. Poverty, and the perils of living paycheck to paycheck, are pervasive in our country. Programs that provide food, medical care, and housing assistance provide a life preserver to those struggling against the tide.
Our leaders should be devising ways to help people gain a stronger economic footing, rather than trying to pull the rug out from underneath them by restricting access to public benefits.
