SPLC statement on Trump administration approval of Medicaid work requirements in Wisconsin

The Trump administration’s approval of work requirements in Wisconsin’s Medicaid program is callous and reckless.

The administration approved this barrier to health care enrollment for low-income people this week, even though a federal court had previously struck down similar restrictions in Kentucky as illegal. In Arkansas, the same kinds of restrictions caused thousands of poor people to lose coverage for serious health issues such as diabetes and HIV-positive status.

But the Trump administration doesn’t care. It is so fixated on transforming Medicaid into a work program that it cannot – or will not – recognize the real harm it is doing.

We are not surprised by this administration’s careless indifference, but we are outraged by its continuing disregard for the health and well-being of low-income individuals.
