Historic Wreath-Laying Ceremony Honoring Rep. John Lewis and Civil Rights Martyrs to Be Held at the Civil Rights Memorial Center

MONTGOMERY, Ala. On Friday, March 3 at 3:00 p.m., the Civil Rights Memorial Center, a project of the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC), will honor the late Congressman John R. Lewis and civil rights martyrs during a wreath-laying ceremony.

The wreath-laying at the Civil Rights Memorial Center (CRMC) will honor the legacy and life of John R. Lewis and 40 martyrs who died during the height of the civil rights movement. For many years, the late Rep. John Lewis led a delegation of congressional and civil rights leaders to the CRMC for this event to honor those who lost their lives in the struggle for freedom during the modern civil rights movement.

Featured speakers include:

  • Margaret Huang is the President and CEO of the Southern Poverty Law Center and its lobbying arm, the SPLC Action Fund
  • Tafeni English-Relf is the director of the Civil Rights Memorial Center and the Alabama State Office
  • Congresswoman Nikema Williams is the first woman elected to represent Georgia’s 5th district. Senator Williams succeeded the late Rep. John Lewis after his death in 2020.
  • Joseph J. Levin, Jr. is a Southern Poverty Law Center co-founder and Board Emeritus member
