ATLANTA — The Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) is alarmed by the opening of a satellite Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) office in College Park, Georgia. This action is the latest example of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) attempting to intimidate and terrorize communities in the Deep South.
“We are deeply concerned and anxious about the opening of the new ICE office in College Park. Given ICE’s recent conduct, especially in Minnesota, we believe this is intended to intimidate already vulnerable communities of color,” said Seth Levi, chief strategy officer, SPLC. “Americans have witnessed the atrocities that follow ICE’s large-scale operations in multiple cities. We see people of color, particularly Latino residents, targeted, with no regard for their due process rights, dignity or safety. We stand strong with our communities in Georgia, and across the South, and condemn broad actions by ICE to target individuals using methods that violate civil and human rights. We also discourage any actions by the federal government and community leaders that violate the constitutionally protected right of anyone to protest.”
