SPLC Deeply Concerned About Robert F. Kennedy’s Record on Health and Human Services

MONTGOMERY, Ala. — The Southern Poverty Law Center is deeply concerned about the nomination of Robert F. Kennedy Jr. As the Senate Committee on Finance continues the confirmation hearing for this nominee to lead the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), the SPLC urges Senators to consider the implications for the nation’s health and well-being.

“HHS programs and initiatives support and enhance the health of Americans through essential services including health insurance, medical research and vaccine recommendations, and hospital and food safety inspections,” said Margaret Huang, president and CEO of Southern Poverty Law Center. “Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s baseless claims casting doubt on the scientifically proven effectiveness of vaccinations are especially troubling. Vaccines have saved millions of lives in the U.S. and around the world, often eliminating the harm caused by some preventable diseases and viruses.

“In addition to promoting unsubstantiated research involving vaccinations, Kennedy has shared racist theories about COVID targeting certain ethnic groups, pushed misinformation on food preservatives and fluoridated water and falsely suggested that H.I.V. does not cause AIDS.

“Any nominee to lead HHS must respect facts, science and the rule of law, debunking conspiracy theories and misinformation that can undermine critical public health initiatives,” Huang added.  “The Senate must thoroughly examine Kennedy’s record and troubling public statements and should only confirm a qualified candidate who will prioritize the health of the American people.”
