SPLC Deeply Disappointed by Congressional Failure to Extend Critical Health Care Protections

MONTGOMERY, Ala. — The Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) expressed deep disappointment in Congress’ vote against extending critical health care subsidies, a decision that will continue to strip millions of Americans of access to affordable health coverage.

“As public servants, Congress, regardless of party affiliation, has a solemn responsibility to pass legislation to protect and not harm our communities, yet a majority of legislators in Congress have refused to provide lifesaving resources for millions of families, including seniors and children in desperate need of healthcare,” said LaShawn Warren, chief policy officer, SPLC. “The expiring Affordable Care Act (ACA) subsidies were at the heart of the government shutdown fight that ended with a promised vote many hoped would provide relief. Overnight, millions of Americans will see their premiums next year skyrocket — putting lifesaving care out of reach or resulting in crippling debt.”

Statewide marketplace enrollments have more than doubled since the introduction of the expanded federal subsidies in 2021. More than half of that growth has taken place in states in the Deep South, including Louisiana and Mississippi, where enrollment has tripled over the last five years. An estimated 7 million people in the Deep South receive the advanced premium tax credit. Without congressional action to extend these subsidies, many individuals and families in the Deep South will see their premiums double, which could devastate their financial stability, force them to drop out of coverage, and further destabilize insurance markets.

“Congress’ failure to extend the ACA subsidies is a betrayal of Americans’ health and financial well-being,” continued Warren. “They had a clear path to protect families and chose not to take it. Across the Deep South, people who depend on these subsidies will now be forced to make impossible decisions about their health care. The SPLC will continue advocating for policies that ensure every person has access to affordable, quality health care.”
