SPLC Urges Senate to Reject SAVE America Act After House Passage

Opponents say that passing any version of the SAVE America Act will disenfranchise millions of voters

MONTGOMERY, Ala. — The Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) condemns the passage of the SAVE America Act by the U.S. House of Representatives. The SPLC urges the Senate to reject this bill in its entirety. Last year, the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility Act, or SAVE Act, died in the Senate in the face of widespread public opposition. The Save America Act, which the House just passed yesterday, is even more extreme.

“The SAVE America Act is just the latest attempt by the House to prevent millions of people from voting in 2026 and future elections,” said Laura Williamson, senior policy advisor, SPLC. “This bill builds on a yearslong attack on the freedom to vote and serves only to create more barriers to voting for eligible U.S. citizens. This latest act would disproportionately impact communities of color, senior citizens, people with disabilities, women, rural voters and low-income people. It would severely burden hardworking election workers with no funding for implementation, while subjecting them to criminal penalties for doing their jobs. It also would require states to turn over sensitive, private data on all voters, with no guardrails or protections.

“The SAVE America Act is trying to influence who will vote. Residents in the Deep South know Jim Crow when they see it, and this bill is Jim Crow 2.0. We urge the Senate to protect our freedom to vote for all and say ‘no’ to the SAVE America Act or any other ‘show me your papers’ bills,” Williamson concluded.
