Redistricting is an increasingly important battlefield in the fight for voting rights and the protection of voter will. While many assume that this is a once-a-decade process, the reality is that district boundaries are changed and updated quite often. Further, redrawing district lines has been a popular tactic for undermining voter will in communities and hinders people’s ability to participate in democracy.
To address this issue, the Southern Poverty Law Center is pleased to announce it is launching a new program center on voting rights, redistricting and advocacy. The Redistricting Advocacy & Community Engagement Program, also known as RACE, will provide organizers the knowledge, language and skills necessary to advocate for fair maps that represent their communities. We seek to help empower people and groups to advocate for themselves and electorally empower their voices. Participants will learn how to advocate for fair electoral maps that reflect the needs of communities while ensuring that electoral races provide opportunity for representation and support the will of the people. This multiday program will explore concepts and skills such as the Voting Rights Act, redistricting, electoral cartography, and media training.
Who Should Apply: If you or your organization have experience with public advocacy, interest in voting rights or electoral representation, or want to fight for fair elections, you should apply.
