Nashville Council Votes to Keep Immigration-Check Program at Jail

While I understand the complexities of having local police involved with a detainee’s immigration status, is this really a “Nativist” (supposed to be a derogatory term) issue? Just because it involves illegal immigrants? If we tag anyone who has an opinion about immigration policy that might make it more difficult on illegal immigrants as a “Nativist,” what problem have we solved? We’ve called someone a name. Good for us.
It seems to me that this is a legislative issue. If you don’t like the federal program, fight to have it changed or overturned. Leave the negative stereotyping of law enforcement and local leaders (with lawful access to a program they think can help their community, right or wrong) as Nativists in the waste bucket outside the door.
