SPLC statement on Trump administration's child separation claim

Today, Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen insisted that children are not being separated from their parents when they present themselves at designated points of entry as they seek asylum. This is not the case.

In our efforts to provide legal representation to detained immigrants through our Southeast Immigrant Freedom Initiative, we have seen multiple cases of fathers being separated from their children after doing just that.

The claims by this administration do not reflect the facts that we are seeing on the ground.
