Our shared liberation requires bridging our diversity to enable collective action. In this polarized political environment, we must not lose sight of the humanity of the people around us. Dialogue creates opportunities to reach across differences and to engage with and understand one another, without losing the integrity of our work for equity and justice.
Learning for Justice Director Jalaya Liles Dunn emphasizes the importance of coming together around a shared vision in the practice of democracy: “We increase our power to foster change when we are in community with one another – deliberating, deciding and taking action.” This issue explores why dialogue is crucial for a thriving democracy, addresses critical issues facing our communities in the South and our nation, and encourages us to reach across our differences for the common good. Our democracy’s strength rests on our ability to commit to one another for a shared purpose that centers our humanity.
