ATLANTA, Georgia — Today, the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC), denounces the actions of Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp in aiding the costly and arbitrary Trump administration takeover of Washington, D.C., by deploying over 300 Georgia National Guard servicemembers.
“The National Guard is intended to respond to domestic emergencies or civil unrest—neither of which is currently happening in Washington, D.C.,” said YT Bell, Georgia state director, SPLC. “By deploying the Georgia National Guard — following similar moves by Mississippi and Louisiana — Gov. Kemp is demonstrating he supports this president’s unlawful efforts to control, criminalize, intimidate and disempower the American people.
“The state of Georgia is dealing with a housing crisis, lack of funding in education and cuts to other essential programs, which should be Gov. Kemp’s priority. As the Trump administration continues to attack American democracy and the rights of underrepresented people, SPLC will continue working with partners and monitoring the efforts of these governors and the ongoing situation in Washington, D.C.,” concludes Bell.
