Erik Olvera serves as chief communications officer, where he oversees the SPLC’s communications strategy and operations. Olvera has spent the better part of his 25-year communications career devoted to social justice issues – even going undercover as a farm laborer for six months to highlight the plight of undocumented immigrants when he was a journalist.
Before joining the SPLC, he was head of communications for Fahr LLC, where he helped develop the Need to Impeach movement. He previously served as the senior director of communications at Earthjustice and was responsible for broadly shaping discourse for the environmental public interest law firm’s legal, legislative and policy work. He also spent several years leading communications for the National Center for Lesbian Rights, where he worked on a wide range of LGBTQ legal cases and legislation, including developing the communications plan that helped lead to the 2015 U.S. Supreme Court marriage equality victory. The Regis University alumnus also spent several years as a journalist, winning more than three-dozen awards for his work.
