Atlanta Public Schools (APS) is preparing a 10- to 15-year facilities plan that could result in the closure or merger of schools across the city. These decisions will directly affect students, families and neighborhoods — and once again, APS is relying on closures and consolidations instead of addressing the deeper issues.
This cycle isn’t new. For years, the district has shuffled students through rezoning and school shutdowns, but the core problems of under-enrollment and underperformance remain. Now our schools and communities are at risk of being disrupted yet again.
The future of Atlanta’s schools is at stake. Families, educators and neighbors must act now — speak up, attend meetings and demand solutions that strengthen our schools instead of shutting them down. Join our campaign to raise your voice and make it clear: Our children deserve better.
How We Respond
We believe that all students should have access to strong, sustainable neighborhood schools, so we’re organizing to ensure that any changes — especially in the Washington Cluster — are made with transparency, community input and long-term solutions in mind. We want to shift the focus from short-term fixes to addressing the root causes of school struggles, such as:
- Gentrification and the displacement of legacy families
- School boundary lines that either concentrate wealth or concentrate poverty
- Disparities in academic and extracurricular programs that make schools attractive for families
